  • THEHARD REPORT More On The Picks,

Ann Wilson, "Best Man In The World",Capitol.. I'd rather take the stage after Jay Lenothan follow up a platinum plus album. When you'veheard a record a million times, it takes over yourbrain, and there's no tougher act to follow. True toform, we luked on first pass, liked It on the second, and it was love at third bite. Ann's truly one ofthe rock era's divas deluxe, and between her andRon "could I get any hotter" Nevison at thedials, you know the track's gonna getcha. Factor inthe Murphy movie and call it the best bet of theweek.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, "Live Alive", Epic..Overall airplay gives "Superstition" one of thisweek's healthiest 34-34 advances, all behind 107now playing, 16 heavies and three increases.WOVE, WONE, WKFM and WEGR lead the phoneparade. Face it, you'll be banging a lot more livemusic in the next few weeks than possibly everbefore, so pay the Boss of the blues his dues. Welike "Ain't Gonna Give Up", "Change It", "ColdShot" and "I'm Leaving You".

Joan Jett, "Roadrunner'', Epic..Reaction records -R -us, so we're mondo impressedby comments like this from WAAF's Russ Mottla,"A surprise performer here. 'Roadrunner' isgarnering top 10 phones after three weeks, andcuriosity calls every time It's played". KZEW, WBABand WXRK also report big and building calls. Lookslike a case where the song and artist were bothprime to pop once again. Heard it?

Peter Gabriel, "Big Time", Geffen.. Thenthere's Peter's new single, off and running with 25new stations and a #66 debut. Other than BruceHornsby's "Western Skyline" at #75 and Van Halenat #83, it's this week's only new entry. It's aninstaheavy at 9, including WLIR, WPLR, WHCN,WPYX, WXXP KFMH, with 18 adds in medium and 4light. Meanwhile, the album holds at #19, with 42currently playing. Expect a big turnout next week, too.

The Robert Cray Band, "Smoking Gun",Polygram.. In a week when Bruce basically ranaway everything, Robert squeezes off the longestHard Hundred advance, 60-42. It's #6 Most Addedwith 23, on 89 reporters after only three weeks, andalready increassed at 14 --and you couldn't ask forbetter breakout credentials. Consider it happeningBig --with a bullet.

Jason and the Scorchers, "Golden Ball andChain", EMI.. As we said last week, this smellslike the smash they've been primed for. We've got18 more adds, with showcase calls KISW, KOME,WKLS, WLLZ, WNEW, KLOS, WSHE front andcenter, 66 adds to date, 9 increases (KQRS, WQFM,WHJY, WKLC), all of which makes for the world'slongest, legitimate run-on sentence and a whopping93-67-53 Hard Hundred track trend, and 41-37ablum underline. Get on that chain gang!

Steve Miller, "I Want To Make The WorldTurn Around", Capitol.. He's got to go numberone, as predicted in our pick a month ago. itpowers 9-5 this week, behind 18 increases, 21powers, 69 heavies and 137 station saturation play. Also note the explosive #8 Most Requested debut, with KQRS, WDIZ, KGON, WONE, WWTR, WAOR,WKFM, KSQY and KRQU among those with fired upphones. The Lp follows 11-9.

The Kinks, "Rock and Roll Cities", MCA.. Iwas expecting Ray and the Boys' first MCA releaseto be slightly over civilized and overtly multi -format.But hell, anybody can crank out no -risk seamlesssingles, right? What a pleasant rollicking surpriseto find them reasserting their rock roots with thisloose and gritty get -down, expecially one thisformat specific. Can city specific customizedversions be far behind?

Iggy Pop, "Real Wild Child", A&M..I've got to believe the Bowie connection put "Cryfor Love" on the radio. Trendsetting programmersfelt the buzz on the artist, and "Cry" came closestto David's distinctive baritone. But as it turns out,Buddy Holly may be Iggy's main man this timearound. The original Is just obscure enough to beatthe oldies update backlash, and this treatment isnot to be believed. Could be his first seriouscrossover success.

CHARTSTARSBruce Springsteen, "Live 1975-85",Columbia.. Well, we sure won't debut this doozieat anything less than #1 on the album chart. We'retalking a total of 91 for "War" (d-9), 59 more on"Fire" (d-35), "Because the Night" with 34 (d-58),"Raise Your Hand" with 27 adds and a #68 debut --plus new entries for "Seeds", "Hungry Heart","Cadillac Ranch", "Born in the USA", and "10thAvenue Freezeout". And other than those add/debuttotals, the statistics and comments are so deep andwide, we really don't know where to start. When it'sfront page news everywhere, and all over local andnational televison--one can only shake one's headand ask "what's the frequency, Kenneth?" Do theyget any bigger than this? Uh uh. And can youbelieve the initial order went in a day? Withoutquestion the most exciting and explosive releaseday in the history of the record business. And youknow what the most amazing aspect of the wholephenomenon is? Anyone who's ever seen theshow thinks Bruce made the record just for them.

Van Haien, "Rock and Roll" live, WB.. KISS,KNAC, KOZZ, KRIX and WKQQ add right into heavy, with 14 more mediums and 3 lights cranking up astrong #49 Core Rock debut. It's 83 in overallairplay. As noted by KGB's Pam Edwards, "It'sgenerating tons of phone interest and is a greatway to freshen up airplay from "5150". DittoKRQR's John McRae, "good timing on the 12", withthe tour ending. People want to hear it, and it keepsthem fresh. A great sales ploy for Christmas retail, too.

Lone Justice,"Shelter", Geffen.. it's too bad agreat sounding crossover single out of the boxdoesn't motivate fast play on a potentially evenstronger album track, as it once did. If that were thecase, "I Found Love" would be all over the radio.Meanwhile, "Shelter" continues to impress. 15Increases and 4 adds fire up a 27-25 Hard Hundredjump, giving the album a clean 31-24 underline.Currently a power at KESI, KGRQ, KRQU, WIZN andKTCZ, and its heavy at 20 more. Not tea bag, eh?Especially strong at the Adult level, 13-8.

  • THEHARD REPORT CHARTSTARS

ChartstarsBilly Squier, "Shot '0 Love", Capitol.. TheCore sample has Billy's best rocker up front with a40-25 surge, but he's flying everywhere else, too.Try a 46-36 overall underline, 30-25 albumprogress. It's obviously tie right track in the nickof time. Again to KRQR's John McRae and "thesong sounds like the solid older Squier--the goodstuff".. KQRS, WDHA, KLAQ, KZOQ, WNGZ andWUVA move up , with 17 more adds pumping theplay count to 75.

Bon Jovi, "Wanted Dead or Alive",Polygram.. The label's had enviable success inreal rock retail, but at the rate Jon keeps dealingthose aces, this could well be their biggest seller todate. He's got the looks, the licks, and (eat yourheart out, you know who) a killer crop 'o curls. Hislatest lands 9 adds, 6 increases (KQRS, KMET,WDVE, WYNF), and 32 heavies for a 28-23 advance.New at #7 Most Requested, thanks to big calls atKQRS, KFMQ, KWHL, WAPL, WXRC, KMET, WEGR,WMGM, WWCT a dozen more.

Bob Geldof, "This Is The World Calling",Atlantic.. With double debuts from Bruce up aheadand a couple of automatics blowing by in thepassing lane, Bob still picks up a respectable 39-37underline. Chalk that up to increases at WMRY,WDHA, KVRE, WXXP, CFNY, KLBJ and six more, aswell as adds from CILQ, KISW, WIYY, WKLS, WSHEand six more. Very strong Adult --27-23, with heavyplay on 13.

Bad Company, "Fame and Fortune",Atlantic.. 64 current reports says this song's abouthalf way home, with a presentable plus report cardthus far. It pushes 45-40, with WBCN, KQRS, KLBJ,KSQY, WDHA and WIXV all increasing, and heavyaction now on 9, including KATP, WQMF, WQFM,KOZZ, KORX, KISS, KFMGand KSQY. New on 7.

John Parr, "Blame It On The Radio",Atlantic.. WDIZ, KLOL, WCCC and WKDF frontJohn's 8 adds. "Radio"'s rolling up heavy air atKOME, KRNA KRQU and WPLR, with KZOQincreasing. The Hard Hundred reflects with a 56-51gain; up 48-47 on the Ip chart. Have you listened toour in house fave "King of Lies" yet?

Paul Young, "Some People", Columbia.. He'sfinally getting a solid shot at album radio --and aftera month, the vital signs look great. Our Adult charthas the single bulleted 39-31, paired with animpressive 58-54 Hard Hundred move. WDIZ,WBCN, KZEW, WKLS, WKQQ, and WSHE highlight13 adds, with WNEW and KGRQ increasing. Checkthis from Mr. Truth in Quotes, Rad Messick, "At firstI thought it would sound to light on the radio, but asI listen to it the more I realize that it will turn out tobe a big song. It's the first time we've ever playedhim."

Bruce Hornsby and the Range, "Along theWestern Skyline", RCA.. As WCCC's Harve Alansays, "in light of Hornsby's major success, thistrack is a natural"..The scon to be released 12"locks 16 early adds, with KLOS, KQRS, KSTM ANDWZZO up in play and heavy air now on 9, includingKZEW and KLOL. New on the Hundred at at #75,and with a start like this, the sky has no limit.

Eric Clapton, "It's All In The Way That YouUse It", WB.. One of our strongest point builderscomes back with an undeniable 26-15 move, courtesy of 18 increeases (KQRS, KZEW, WQFM,KSJO, WNOR, WIOT WWCK), 18 more adds, 3powers and 33 heavies. Amazing performanceconsidering Henley's head start out of the box. Thealbum totals profit with another underline, 6-5, inthe midst of thick top 10 competition.

Georgia Satellites, "Keep Your Hands",Elektra.. This week they did it. #1 Most Requested!44 stations put 'em there. The play stats pace witha 10-7 surge on the Hard Hundred, pushing thealbum up a notch to #15. We've got 11 powers, 67heavies, 53 mediums and one of 86's biggest, brightest success stories on our hands. Congratsto Brad, Bone, Ray and the gang for a job welldone.

World Party, "Ship of Fools", Chrysalis..We'll take a week off from nagging you about thisincredibly diverse and entertaining soon to beclassic album you really should be listening to andplaying and stick to the facts: The single's up 76-69, pulling the album 49-44 (both underlined). 11adds include CILQ, KILO, WHJY, and WPLR, withKROQ, WWCK, 3WV and WNGZ fronting 8increases. Here's WWTR's Skip Isley to testify:"We believe in the sound of World Party. The style, texture, songwriting and instrumentation are sodifferent but so damn cool. You've gotta give thisrecord a chance".

Billy Joel, "This is the Time", Columbia..More than a few reporters are adding into Heavy --including WCCC, WHMD, WKQQ, WMGM, WQBK,and WRCN..and it's already a power item at CFOX,WIOQ and WPLR, with WRKI, WBAB, WIMZ, WOUR,WPDH and WRKI among the increases. New on 11,underlined 77-71.

Smithereens, "Behind the Wall of Sleep",Enigma.. The Most Deserving Second Cut from aBlue Ribbon Baby Band? That's where we'd peg it."Sleep" slips 61-57, with a healthy 11 station(KQRS, WLLZ, WEGR) add week swelling the ranksto 59. Pam Edwards sez, "It's a tough task, but theSmithereens have translated their down and dirtyclub sound into a formula that's just smoothenough for commercial radio and gritty enough toset it aside from the rest."

Europe, "The Final Solution", Epic.. Lastweek we noticed adds at WBCN, KGB, WQFM,KISS, WPLR and several more..and this report has'emm new on KDJK, KRQR, WDHA and five more. The album is closing in on 100,000 units at thispoint, and they're current the longest running newband on MTV at the 21 week mark. This formula -orchestral project has all the classic earmarks of atime delay hit, so watch it closely.

Steve Winwood, "Back in the High Life",WB.. At this rate he'll take this one top ten, too.#12 Most Added with 18 stations, with a playincrease count that includes KOME, WIOQ, KZOQ,WYNF and WTPA. Lots of beef on the heavyrotation roster, as well; KISW, KLPX, KZEW, WCCC,WHCN , WXRT. Up 60-43-34 over the last threereports, with 80 now on board.

  • The Final Frontier. Do you boldly go where no man has gone before? Coyour announcers? Right now the industry (and when we say the industry,

THE we mean the business) is electric with the FCC's renewed interest in"content". Where do you draw the line? Or do you draw it at all? How doyou regard the Commission? What part does Deregulation play? And

EDIT'ORIALwouldThe King of Outrage, Howard Stern, work in your town? We asked.

and boy, we got frank answers.

    HARD REPORT

Denton Marr/KCFX: Didn't we go thru this awhile back with Tipper Gore? This is a tempest in ateapot. I'm not afraid of the FCC because I'm notdoing anything that would make them unhappy. TheFCC engages in what has been called "enforcementby raised eyebrow." That's what we're seeing now. Ihave never reprimanded anyone, but I havesuggested to people that they're crossing the lineof good taste. I don't want my audience turned offby something that's funny in a locker room, but noton the radio. I haven't delineated what words areacceptable. I expect talent to know that going in.Howard would probably not work here --it's amidwestern city, with traditional midwestern virtues.People don't accept what isn't polite conversation inpublic.

Oedipus/WBCN: There are strong right-wingforces in this country that are trying to swing thependulum their way. They want us to abide by theirmorality, they want us to look at the Constitutiontheir way. They are powerful and very scary. Theyare not to be taken lightly. I am not afraid of theFCC...I work with the FCC. The FCC's not at fault;they're just following up on complaints. I'm aresponsible broadcaster. I'm licensed to be justthat. In any art form, people can go to far. Ireprimand, and, in some cases, suspend them. Idon't reprimand for double entendre. Yes, there arewords the jox can't use...but it goes beyond "theseven words." There's acceptable taste and thenthere isn't. I don't restrict anyone, but if my joxhave to use those words to be funny, then theydon't belong on WBCN. Charles (Lacquidara) andMark (Parenteau) are two real Iaidback guys. And asfar as I know, Howard Stern has never violatedFCC regulations.

Charlie Kendall/WNEW-FM: Action by theCommission is long overdue. I think theCommission is doing the public a disservice bydoing nothing. Something along the lines of punitiveaction...I've been living within the guidelines for 23years, and it's too bad some people feel they can't.I think ten years ago, the FCC would have areadyput a halt to some of the things currently on the air.Twenty years ago, they'd have had announcers(saying things they say today) shot at dawn.Reprimands? Charles Lacquidara, Mark Parenteau,Steve Sutton, myself..yeah, sure. And we're tooclassy a radio station for double entendre. My joxcan use anything within good taste.

Andy Lockridge/KTXQ: Obscenity has alwaysbeen determined by local standards --and that'sreally the bottom line --if you breach thosestandards, the audience will change stations. If itgets too outa line, they'll go some place else. Everyonce in a while, the morning show will over step thebounds of good taste, which can happen innocentlyenough, because we want the show to generatetalk; and once they do, we can tell immediately --from phones and letters...that's when we have adiscussion. I don't think Howard would work here. This is Dallas, Texas, the buckle of the Bible Belt.Moby's on in this town now, and says "ass" once ina while, but that's about it.

Tom Owens/WEBN: The market governs itself. Ifpeople find something offensive, well, that's whyradios are manufactured with dials. I don't know ifwe've ever feared the FCC on the level that we'vefeared a building in Laurel, Md. And, yes, there arewords my jox can't use: The call letters of mycompetition.I would prefer not to face Howard in this market .He is obviously a very powerful entertainmentvehicle. However, in a market like Cincinnati, WEBNdoesn't have to go to such extremes in an effort todefine itself.

Alex DeMers/Consultant: It's an outgrowth ofthe times we live in. It's a new version ofEisenhower era commie hunting. On the other hand, radio has pushed things too far. Unlike TV or print, radio is a most difficult medium for a parent tocontrol or censor. There are DJs who say "shit" forthe sake of saying "shit." But there are shock guyslike Howard and Grease who doing somethingintelligent with humor.

Greg Solk/WLUP: You can't be a responsiblebroadcaster and ignore this issue. Basically, wehave to watch out for ourselves --it's you who canget you in trouble. When you have personalities likeDahl and Brandmeier, part of your responsibilty isto make sure their outrageousness only goes sofar. It's tough --you don't want to restrict talent, butwhen it comes dowh to legals...l have two driveswhere the audience tunes in to hear outrage. I'd saythat in the morning and afternoon, we have thekings of double entendre. Double entendre is a veryuseful item. Your basic four-letter words are theonly restriction. That's about as tight as it gets. These guys are real good at what they do. A lot oftimes it's not what Dahl says, so much as the wayhe says it. Part of my job is to insulate these guysfrom conflict and controversy. I spend time keepingmy people happy --I don't want to change theirattitudes. But I let them know when it gets toooutrageous.

Doug Podell/WLLZ: We had recently had TedNugent fill in while The Morning Crew was onvacation, and he was REALLY outrageous. But hedrew six times more audience than normal andwe've got the numbers to prove it. When you seethe success that these shows have, in a way, Iguess we are asking them to go as far as the limit. This will become the issue as we cross morebarriers. The Commission seems to be more lenientthese days. If they come after you, it must be for apretty good reason. There aren't any words my joxcan't use...other than the obvious ones. I betHoward would do rather well here. He didn't havemuch time to get started (at W4), but if he played afew more records, he'd do very well in Detroit.

Carey Curelop/WYNF: This is old. I think it's anon -issue. With obscenity based on communitystandards, nobody is in a better position than theradio station to determine what the community willor won't stand for. I think to have a free and opensociety, everyone has to be tolerant of someexcesses. I think this has a good chance of blowingover --much like the Senate investigation of rocklyrics. DJs? I could be pretty graphic here, but let'sjust say that of the seven words you can't use, theycan't use five of them.

  • THEHARD REPORT

EDITORIALIt's hard to say if Howard would work here. Tampais somewhat conservative, however, we have a lotof people from other places, so I think there's afairly high tolerance for anything around here.

Rad Messick/WDIZ: As a matter of fact, Ithink deregulation has probably put broadcastersmore in control. In a way, we have to watch outmore because we are deregulated. It's easier forthe FCC to come in when there aren't rules andtake your license away. Just when you think thatthey're not paying attention, they'll slide into townand say, "Hey, not enough public affairs this week,"or "no ID's at the top of -he hour," etc. They'regiving people ten thousand fines, now. Probablythe people that go the furthest are the morningshow. But, then again, it's a matter of good taste. Igive them fairly free reign. But they know where todraw the line. I'm considering that this is the Southand even though a lot of people here aretransplanted from the North, I still think there areenough bible -toting baptists to blow you out. Itwould remind me of when the Greaseman was inJacksonville. He went over well, but he wasalways, always getting letters from ministers andcivic groups, etc. You never know 'til you try it...

Beau Phillips/KISW: It's really never been anissue with us. We've always self -regulated. TheFCC doesn't have a policy that says "You can't saythis," but when a listener writes and says "I wasoffended by this", then the onus is on us to justifywhy we put it on the radio. It's more like an NABcode item than an FCC regulation. I've surroundedmyself with people who have a real clearunderstanding of where the line of good taste isand how hard we can stomp on that line beforestepping over it. That's really the only guideline weuse and it's been successful for us so far. We'vebeen offered the Stern syndicated show. I respectwhat Howard does and think he is absolutelyperfect for the Northeast Quadrant. When you're inNew York City and trading insults with cabbies,Howard's "what business is it of yours" is right onthe mark. But San Francisco, Seattle, or even LosAngeles just aren't that kind of town. Howardepitomizes the blunt, abrasive New York attitude. Iwouldn't trade crotch humor for double digits. Imight consider a jock where that's part of therepertoire, but I really think the shock jockapproach is more of a short term fix. I'd ratherbuild a long term John DeBella/David Lettermantype of humor, rather than someone who bludgeonsyou over the head. I think the Sam Kinessonapproach burns very fast. Kinesson is totally rudeand totally shocking and he's gonna work, but that'snot the only route to double digits. Long term,Robin Williams is the only way to go.

Ted Edwards/KGB-FM: First, any time that asituation arises in which we put our license injeopardy, I'm gonna pay very close attention. Inthese times of PMRC, Clean Cable Committees andsuch, responsible programmers have to be diligentin adhering to the letter of the law. Fortunately, thatis a very easy goal to reach. There are'nt a lot ofstipulations that the FCC (before and afterderegulation) dictates to a radio station for whatconstitutes proper behavior. It's easy to be titilatingor irreverent without being obscene. Really, we'reonly talking about a handful of words that by theletter of the law you are crossing the line with. The

thing that comes to mind to me often when I thinkof the problem is standard broadcast television. Ifind it fascinating that these pressure groups areattacking radio stations and cable stations whenany night of the week there's more filth and sexthan you can count on all the digits of your body onstandard TV. Anybody of Howard Stern's talentwould probably work well in almost any situation. What I would question is taking him out of NewYork and putting him into some place not ascosmopolitan. Would the amount of grief that astation would get from his content be worth therevenue that his talent would generate? I don'tknow.

Harve Alan/WCCC: I think that each individualprogrammer should keep a pulse on their market. Ihave no problem pushing things to the limit, butfeel shock value for shock is not good andeventually think it could backfire. Everybody on myair staff knows what I want on the radio station. Inmost cases, I don't need to stay on the jockscontext wise. They know when to stop. It's veryrare that we will get a complaint call, but we'rereally doing shock radio. Most of the context hereis lifestyle, not only with music, but with politics, community events, and workplace issues. Ourmorning team is very topical, very people oriented, and anti- establishment --but they are not doingsmut humor. I don't know how much higher wecould go with shock radio. In the Birch quarterlymen 18-34 Monday through Friday 6-10am, we havea 26.2. WTIC-FM is our next closest at a 14.3,and WHCN has a 9.1.

Tom Evans/WIYY: You have a unique situationhere because Stern worked in DC and the signalobviously gets into the market. We are carrying thesyndicated show on Satuday, which I will say ismuch more restrained than Howard's Mondaythrough Friday show in New York and Philadelphia.(At least as of a couple of months ago, which wasthe last time I heard it). I'm always concerned aboutthe FCC, although I do think they're easier lately...Idon't know if people are more tolerant or the shockvalue has simply worn off and shock jocks are justreflecting the marketplace...I don't have strictguidelines for the morning show. They've beendoing it for four or five years now and they prettymuch know what the listeners will stand up to.Plus, with DC101's signal getting the Greasemaninto the southern half of our metro, that ground isalready fairly well covered.

Cynde Slater/WAAF: I'm not aware of seriousviolations. My morning show always rides that lineof good sense and tasteless humor. We feel that ifwe don't get at least one or two complaints a weekwe aren't doing our job. I think all radio peoplehave to be aware of what constitutes good radio.Sure, we're concerned about the FCC in terms ofour moral obligation to serve the public, but theFCC has really been deregulated in terms of filth.Howard Stern is in our market on tape, but I dobelieve that good, non stop rock beats him anyquarter hour of the day. I hear the live show ismuch better.

  • THEHARD REPORT

EDITORIALGreg Gillispie/WDVE: Well, Howard Stern'ssyndicated show is on in our town and I don't thinkit's working. I don't think the syndication is nearlyas good as his live show, primarily because hislive show deals with what's happening now in NewYork, and his canned show is just that. As far aswhat my jocks can and can't say, they know. We'renot out to shock people by being potty -mouthed,we're there to relate to our natural audience. Theycan say "hell", they can say "damn" --shit, Brucesays "goddam" three times in "Growing Up" --andwe play that. I think that any well produced, intelligent radio station knows where to draw thaline...I don't know whether the FCC is easier. Youwork within the guidelines and you make your radiostation the best it can be.

Michael Dalfonzo/WSHE: As far as we'reconcerned, it's not an issue. We are bound by whatI would call good taste. And no, I don't have tocontinually ride my jocks as far as what they say ordon't say. Basically a "damn" or a "hell" is okay incontext, generally if it's a phone call from a listener.I prefer the jocks don't do that. Stern in Miami? Idoubt it. I'd say he's unique to New York. If he wasgoing to work anywhere outside of New York, itwould be Miami, because half of the people hereare from New York. The FCC can always walk inwith 'just cause' and say, "Hey, that license youhave-- that's worth 25 mil. You don't have itanymore." That's like the death penalty. That's abig deterent. There's a lot less garbage and redtape that you have to deal with; a lot less sluff thatdoesn't anything that you have to deal with, but ultimately I'd say they are easier to deal withbut still command a hell of a lot of respect...lf I wasreally, really convinced that it would work and getnumbers, I'd probably do it. That's the bottom line;we're here to make money. You've got to weigh thetrade offs. Is some guy yelling dick jokes between6 and 10 am and getting a ten share worth blowingoff some advertisers?

Rob Barnett/KZEW: Yes, it's an issue in asmuch as there are so many organized right wingmovements in America making rock and rollstations a high profile target. And it's not hard tosee how such pressure groups could get the ear ofthe FCC...Our station doesn't have anybody on itwho uses obscenities for shock value, but there areseveral stations in the market whose morning

shows use a lot of blue humor. So we're nowbuilding a morning show as an alternative to that"in your face," obnoxious presentation. I believethere are potentially large audiences for both kindsof morning radio. Sure, some disc jockeys in certainmarkets have strong feelings about being able tosay words like "shit", but I don't think anyonewhose natural style is not one of shock radio wouldwant to use a word like that. It's true that that kindof radio can generate ratings for certain radiostations, but I don't have any personal interest inprogramming that kind of radio station. As abroadcaster you have to decide. Do you try toentertain people in a positive way, or do you wantto try and get ratings by talking about your privateparts?. I don't think Howard would work in Texas.Having heard his show in New York, I think itsounds great in context, but I don't think it would flyhere.

Ted Utz/WMMR: WMMR has no policy as towhat can and cannot be said on the airwaves. Wefeel the jocks have enough experience and taste tobe able to speak for themselves in a fashion that'sappropriate. The FCC has never really been aproblem for me. They're an organization of reaction. In other words, they'll react to the audience and notto the radio. No doubt they are less threateningthan they were ten years ago, but then again, society's standards have loosened considerably. But that's beside the point. Any jock with a feel forwhat he or she is doing knows how to communicatethose feelings can really say anything as long as ithas a purpose. Shock for shock, value becomesvery tiresome quickly. If the FCC were to take onanything in Philadelphia, it wouldn't be the MorningZoo. And will Howard work in my town? He hasn'tyet.

very difficult situation, and Don worked very, veryhard," said WCKG VP/GM Mark Morgan. "it justcame to the point where I felt we had a good radiostation, but could be a great radio station. It wastime to take a fresh approach."

Morgan stressed that "We plan no changes indirection. The company (Cox) has given us atremendous committment. We are looking for anestablished AOR pro to replace Don, and I hope tobe able to make an announcement in a couple ofweeks."Davis had been PD for over a year -and -a -half. He

came to WCKG from DC101.Morgan said that Cox WGTR/Miami PD Bill Wise

would not be involved with the programming ofWCKG. MD Tom Daniels has been "asked to holddown the fort."

GOOD MORNING, FUN CITYAfter days of speculation in New York papers,

including the printing of his picture, midday guyDave Herman is again the morning man atWNEW-FM/NYC. Herman sigied a five-year deal. With a sixteen year tenure at WNEW, he has the

potential to be in one place for a total of twenty-one years. Before WNEW, Dave was on the old ABCLove network, and was also on the 1967 sign-oncrew at WMMR/Phi!adelphia."It'll be music -intensive, with all the service and

information one needs to wake up in the morningand know what planet they're on," says PD andinterim morning man Charlie Kendall, "...which iswhat they are not getting anywhere else."Wednesday (11/12) was Dave's first morning show. He's teamed with Lisa Glasberg (news), MartyMartinez (writing/production), and PhilMushnick of the NY Post handles sports. Theshow will be produced by Jim Buff. That's ashitload of people. Kendall may have to red -shirtsomeone to make the 44 player limit.Weekender Ray White is the new midday host. Now go to bed, Charlie.

GOOD MORNING, STEEL CITYScott Paulsen is the brand new morning man at

Talk about dream-dates...thisguy really meets the needs or the shopping list.Paulsen will do a single; no partners. His start date

is 11/20. Now go to bed, Greg.

If you've noticed the big buying spree lately (itwould be impossible to ignore) and wondered why,it's because owners want all transactions to occurbefore Jan. 1 --when the new tax code takes effect. That's why everyone's selling like the Russians arein New Jersey.KISS/San Antonio, which has been sold to Noble,

expects its new owners Dec. 3. And former KISSGM John Hiatt has purchased crosstown rivalKESI for $9 million. He didn't go "across the street,"he bought "across the street."As DKM takes over the old Group One stations

(including KAZY, WTUE, and WONE), we'redelighted to note that long time consultant MaryCatherine Sneed has been named to headcorporate programming for the chain. In a fast turnaround, WBYR/Buffalo has been sold.

Devine Communications let it go to BuffaloBroadcasting Ltd. Partners, Garrett CommunicationsInc.

DID WE SAY "CROSS THE STREET?"KISW/Seattle GM Steve West leaves for rival

KQKT to become GM. Popular belief holds thatKQKT will go AOR. We're watching this one closely. This one isn't over by a long shot.

BUY ME A PAPER?Newspaper giant Harte-Hanks has announced that

Radio & Records will be sold.Gee, what an impact we've made. And after only

five issues.Harte-Hanks is divesting itself of some fifty-six

operating divisions to "concentrate on other areas."

DID YOU EVER HAVE TO MAKEUP_ YOURMIND?John Sebastian has once again thrown his hat

into the consultant ring.In opening his new firm, John announced that he

won't visit client stations. All contact will be phoneor via computer. He will charge only $500/station nomatter what the market size. This will be aconfidential consultancy. The roster will not bepublic.Q107 IS THE CHAMPBig congrats to CILQ/Toronto for cleaning up at

    ADULT ROCK

Picks:Price-Sulton, "Shotgun Shy", Epic.. In spiteof the Springsteen juggernaut, we found a dozen orso stations that had listened, liked and offeredconsideration status. Seven adds included WLLZ,KRIX, KNCN, & KROQ which we'd call a fine startconsidering the traffic. The thick, rich arrangementreeks of Phil Spector, the overall feel being one ofMike and the Mechanics via the L.A. Studioroute...Yeah..

Journey, "I'll Be Alright Without You",Columbia.. Well, yeah, the "Hot Mix" did kindascuff it up a bit, but it sure sounds upper demo tous.Steve Perry's trills spell housewife thrills, and it'scertainly up the band's usual high standards.

Wang Chung, "Eyes of the Girl", Geffen..Any fan will tell you they've come up with strongermelodies, but this act gets more mileage out ofmood and texture than just about anybody. Howmany people wrote "To Live and Die in L.A" off onfirst and second listen. And more than a few missed"Dance Hall Days". The arangement and overallambience on "Eyes" is another serious step forwardin their subconscious desire to become Geffen'sPolice. And I think they're gonna do it.

Glass Tiger, "Someday", ManhattanThis single has been slow twisting since last

summer or so it seems. In fact the album evolutionhad programmers moving from "Thin Red Line" tothe hit single "Don't Forget Me", on to "Someday"and then to "Looking at a Picture". In fact, cut fouris already up and running at the likes of WAAF,WCCC, KLAQ, KGGO, WPLR and more. Well, nowthe top 40's have caught up with where you used tobe. That of course, is "Someday". If you played itand moved on, go back one space to where theother guys are just now arriv ng.

AIRPLAY ANALYSISObviously Bruce takes names this week. But you

already know that..otherwise, we're impressed withLone Justice's 13-8 penetration. With 20 heavyand five power reports already in, be sure to givethis excellent ballad room to breath...Same goes forDavid and David's "Cracks". The Hard Hundredpegs it at #13, but adult stations power it up 11-4.That's probably the strongest overall gain on thischart. If you're looking upper demo get it heavy orbetter...Big, Big move for Paul Simon's"Graceland" too. We really had higher hopes for afast build overall, but between Bruce and a fewother stronger movers, its temporarily stalled at#43. We emphasize "temporary". The man's backwith a commercial and artisic tour de force andyou'd be remiss not to push on with this track..Andof course by now you're or or close to REM's"Superman". It's #26 overall, with an even better25-19 Adult gain. They're the hippest wide demo

act out there, and we expect at least another fiveposition run in our next sheet. Bob Geldof'sdramatically smoother sound and equallyheightened media profile has enhanced his upperdemo appeal, as he moves 27-23, well ahead of his39-37 Hard Hundred placement and 44-42 Corestatus...As a long time card-carrying Paul Youngfan, I'm loving the acceptance on "Some People".and at the rate the Adult sample is moving thesingle along, it should go top 20 in no time. #54overall. Take advantage before multi format playdiminishes your returns. Although Eddie Money's"Sleeping" was a bit slow to make this list, takeyour cue from the 49-40 progress and jump in on asong you'll hear up and down the dial. Go ahead, you need the fiber..And the same goes for thePretenders "Room Full of Mirrors". I prefer "Hymnto Her" or "Chill Factor", but with the label pushingthe button on an already well established rocker, you'd best be prepared to deal with it.

Yngwie Malmsteen, "Fire", Polygram..The straight ahead rockers will roll it without

question cause it's Yngwie. He is the metal guitargod at this point. And even if your intent is to dropin enough crunch to hold the 18-24's, this is amuch better than average track from the kid. Thoseminor keys could cause problems in all dayparts, but with the right kind of 8 -mid image rotation, it'smoney in the bank.

Tesla,"Modern Day Cowboy", Geffen.. Whenmanager/stock market whiz/metal maven delux CliffBernstein says "jump!", we say "which cliff?"Nobody, I say Nobody (well, Bone comes close) hasmetal radar to match the man behind Def Lep,Dokken, Metallica and the original Rush signing. Hislatest signing "Tesla" hails from the sufficiently lowrideresque Sacramento area, and you can't arguewith good breeding. Between the big sound andeven bigger guitar, bet the ranch and the hog thatMr. B's found another big one.

    AIRPLAY ANALYSISChart highlights...

Taking it from the top: Boston's "Ready" rollspast the Pretenders to lock the top slot, with their"Cool the Engines" also roaring 13-8. They've had anice long roll as Core Dominators Deluxe, and wecan't wait to see how long it takes Bruce to regainthe turf...J011 Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive"continues the march 20-17 (now #23 overall), andthe core quotient continues to keep Stevie Ray astep ahead of the overall numbers with a 35-20move. Billy Squier's 40-25 sprint has him tenpoints ahead of the HH on this list, but at the ratethe record's coming on, that lead probably won'tlast. Although Core reporters were a bit slow onthe draw on Robert Cray, this week finds itsmokin' with a #37 debut. John Parr's "Blame ItOn The Radio" also enjoys a comfortable 10 pointadvantage Core, with a 46-41 gain there, ascompared to the 56-51 overall gain. Again, we'reconvinced the world will be on Jason's "GoldenBall and Chain" before it's all over, and it's good tosee the early rock acceptance with that #47debut..And we were a little surprised to see theVan Halen in at #49. Let's just say we anticipateat least a 15 to 20 position improvement next week. Finally, note the Zebra debut at 50 for "Can't LiveWithout". Although it's doing fine, please maketime for our in-house favorite "You'll Never Know".

MUSIC NEWS ammumommilm. And now, the latest music news LIVEFROM LONDON, courtesy of CFNY and ourexclusive reporter, LEE CARTER. Lee canbe heard on CFNY's "Sunday MusicMagazine" program and on Live FromLondon aired Wednesday evenings.

Following last week's violence at a SMITHSconcert in Newport, where the lead singerMORRISSEY suffered a black eye, trouble hasflared up again. At a show in Preston, within TheSmiths' first number, Morrissey was hit by an objectwhich struck him In the forehead (It is unclear whatiho object was: some witnesses say it was a fiftypence coin, which being larger than a dollar coin Isquite heavy, and some say it was a drumstick).Morrissey's head was bleeding as he left the stageand although, as with last week's incident, hewanted to continue with the show, in the end hewas rushed to a Preston hospital, as the bleedingcontinued. It is suspected that the member of theaudience who threw the missile at Morrissey wasengaging in an unfortunate spate of copy-catting, agrim reminder of the power of the national mediahere in Britain and in particular the music press. Toput it crudely, people probably read in last week'smusic papers that the singer was Injured at a gigand now think It's somehow cool to go to Smiths'shows and cause trouble. It is not clear yetwhether The Smiths plan to continue theirbeleagured tour of the U.K. Rumour has it that TheSmiths are employing a second drummer - a guysimply known as Fred who currently pounds awayin a little-known outfit called The ImpossibleDreamers. Two drummers, eh? Didn't the DoobieBrothers used to do this?

Receiving saturation coverage in London at themoment is THE MISSION, also highly tipped bythis column. It is featured prominently in threedifferent music papers this week, after havingalready had cover features in two others. It's notJust the pedantic heavies either, like the NME, butalso the teen mags like "SMASH HITS" and"NUMBER ONE". All of this attention will aid andabet the release of their long-awaited Lp forPhonogram, called "GOD'S OWN MEDICINE",out In a few days here. By popular demand, theoutfit is also extending its U.K. tour, and alsointends to film the shows for future videos. Acautionary note though should be that their single,"Stay With Me", has moved down now well out ofthe Top Forty, although the U.K. charts are notalways the best indicator of potential success. Thesimilar group, The Cult, has never done particularlywell in the charts but seems to be doing very wellworldwide, with or without the approval of the fickle, single -buying British public.

That same public, prone as it is to extremechanges in temperment, put DOCTOR AND THEMEDICS to number one for four weeks last June, with a cover of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in TheSky". (Nobody was apparently more pleased thanNorman who was discovered working in ahamburger joint In San Francisco and flew over toBritain recently to collect a massive royalty cheque). With an image of outrageous silver flares, twogothic girls who don't seem to do anything inparticular except pout a lot, and a mish-mash ofpsychedelic clothes, they seem unlikely rock starsbut appeal more to Britain's sense of humour andlove of tackiness. Their next single out in a fewdays should do nothing to dispel that Image. It's aremake of Abba's "Waterloo". The record features

a guest appearance from a great British institution.Roy Wood: the hairy, former lead singer of a mid -seventies band that was not dissimilar to TheMedics today - Wizard. Roy also, of course, had amore esteemed career as the founding member ofboth ELO and The Move. Doctor And The Medics isworking on a debut Lp, which will be out in the NewYear.

Jon Moss, of CULTURE CLUB, has been chargedwith the possession of cocaine. He's beenremanded on bail by the Marleybone MagistratesCourt, the same court who convicted Boy Georgeand Company, a few months ago. Jon Moss alsoappears to be indulging in - urn - other - er -leisurely, decadent pursuits, shall we say. Thisweek Europe's biggest gay club, London's"Heaven", held a promotion for a brand of condom.A curious contest took place to see who could puttheir rubbers on the fastest! Included in this - urn- interesting competition were Mr. Moss and MarcAlmond and if I go into any further detail I'm sureI'll run the risk of having this column intercepted atU.S. Customs.

The HUMAN LEAGUE, who at the time of writingseemed to be a good contender for "Billboard's"number one with its brilliant "Human" single, isready to release its new one here, entitled "I NeedYour Loving". The League is up to its usual trickson the 12" with an extended dub mix, aninstrumental version, and an acapella mix. It allmakes up 21 minutes of music! At the time that"Don't You Want Me" became an American numberone, Phil Oakey remarked that he didn't want thegroup to become another M. (Remember "PopMusik"?) Well, it may have taken them another fouryears to get back into the U.S. Top Five, but I thinkwe can safely conclude that they've outlived M, maythey rest in peace.

KILLING JOKE releases its long-awaited new Lpon the 10th entitled "BRIGHTER THAN ATHOUSAND SUNS". According to the blurb inthe press release, the title comes from a piece ofEgyptian hieroglyphic writing, describing what somebelieve to be the first atomic explosion before 7000B.C. Let's hope the music lives up to suchfascinating stuff. The last few singles haveindicated that it has changed radically to a muchsofter approach. The critics at "Melody Maker"certainly don't think much of its new stuff - incitingits lead singer Jaz to storm into their offices, showering the unfortunate hacks in raw choppedliver and live maggots. The boys at MM (who intheir typically English -hack style LOVE this sort ofstuff) responded with glee in their gossip columnthis week - demanding to know whose liver it was,and supplying us with other classic tales of timesgone by, such as the day The Stranglers dangled ajournalist from the Eiffel Tower, and the day whenMarc Almond stormed into the offices of "RecordMirror" with a bullwhip and flayed anyone in sight...

An 80 -minute movie has been completed of lastsummer's "Self -Aid" concert in Dublin, whichfeatured U2, THE BOOMTOWN RATS (inprobably its last performance), ELVISCOSTELLO, THE POGUES and VANMORRISSON. The film is currently beingscreened at The Dublin Film Festival, but interestedparties should probably get in touch with the Irish

TV network RTE, who'll be showing it thisChristmas. "Self -Aid" was more or less Bob doinghis bit for his own country, raising money for back -to -work schemes and employment co-ops withinThe Republic of Ireland.

STATUS QUO'S Francis Rossi was taken tohospital last week after he collapsed onstage at aQuo concert in Switzerland. Rossi was sufferingfrom simple exhaustion and although it apparentlytook some time to revive him, the group is alreadyback on the road.

Britain's latest heartthrob is NICK KAMEN, ayoung man who came to fame here as a result ofan award -winning TV commercial for Levi 501 jeans. So Kamen already has a head start in the young -ladies -drooling -over -him ratings across the countryas a result of this ad. Now Nick has released hisdebut single "EACH TIME YOU BREAK MYHEART", written and produced by Madonna! Isuppose it comes, therefore, as no surprise that therecord does sound like a Madonna album track witha male vocal - but this does not seem to deter thestudent girls with whom I share accommodation inLondon, who keep uttering things like - "WorraHunk!!" - so what do I know? The video is anotherin the current crop of clips made to look rough andhomemade, a la Steve Winwood and Duran Duran, without the writhing girls. Kamen, when interviewedon the Channel Four rock programme "The Tube"came across as rather less than intelligent. Uponpointing this out to the aforementioned youngladies, they said "Yeah, that's true, but worra hunk!"I don't know...

ELTON JOHN releases a new Lp this week inBritain entitled "Leather Jackets". It includes atrack co -written by Cher called "Don't Trust ThatWoman". Both Elton and the family soul group FiveStar have come in for some criticism by The BritishMedical Association. Elt is advertising a chocolatebar on the television and Five Star's tour is alsosponsored by a chocolate manufacturer. The BMAsays it is irritated that these artists are encouragingyoung people to eat candy.

Former JAPAN drummer STEVE JANSEN isteaming up with EX-YELLOW MAGICORCHESTRA'S YUKIHIRO TAKAHASHI. Thepair has been friends for a long time, ever sincethey met backstage at The Hammersmith Odean in1981. Ever since then, Jansen has been discreetlyflying out to the real Japan, to work a couple ofmonths at a time with Yukihiro. The fruit of theircollaboration is a single called "Stay Close", outsoon. Following my reports that new material fromDavid Bowie is unlikely, apart from the current titlesong for the movie "When The Wind Blows" (whichdropped unceremoniously out of the charts lastweek) I now hear that Bowie is in fact in New York, working on a new Lp - for a Spring '87 release.Rumours also abound that a world tour is in thecards, although this is officially denied by allconcerned...

Stiff Record's promising signing FURNITUREwho's just completed a sell-out tour of the country, and has two highly acclaimed singles under its belt,"Brilliant Mind" and "Love your Shoes". It's aboutto release its debut Lp "THE WRONG PEOPLE".Although not national hit -makers, Furniture isbeloved in the club, fringe world, and should beperfect material for college radio.

  • THE MUSIC NEWSIN BRIEF: Seen about town, Cyndi Lauper whocut her American tour to fly over here to make hernew video for "Change Of Heart". She was spottedat various locations in the city doing a street -musician act, for the promo, and holding out a hatfor contributions. Curious behaviour.A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS (the group whichMorrissey once referred to me as "A packet ofgerbils") releases its greatest hits package thisweek, entitled "The Best Of...". It includes"Wishing", "Space Age Love Song" and "I Ran".TALK TALK releases a new single "I Don't BelieveIn You" this week. The 12" features a remix of"Happiness Is Easy" which first appeared on its"Colour Of Spring" Lp. The band is in the studiorecording its new Lp.

Seen jogging around Hyde Park was BILLY IDOL.who seems to be more comfortable with Britain nowthat his music is getting more exposure here and"people are not just looking at me as if I was stillthe old 'King Rocker' from Generation X," he toldthis week's "Melody Maker" in a cover story. Billyalso hotly denies all rumours of drug addiction, etc.Great interest here in the revitalized career ofDEBBIE HARRY who receives prominantcoverage in the media. Some early reviews expressextreme disappointment in her material, however. It's whispered that Miss Cutesiepie 1982, CLAIREGROGAN, who used to front the winsome, two -hitwonders Altered Images, has just signed a new solodeal with Phonogram Records.GRAHAM WEIR of OMD recently sent his pantsto the cleaners with 340 Pounds in the pocket.Back came a pile of soggy paper. Rock stars! Ifthey're not burning money, they're drowning it!

CHARTS:In the Independent Label Lp Charts, Elvis Costello's"BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE" (Imp/DemonRecords) moves up to #4. The new single off theLp here is the chilling "I Want You", which hasalready reduced a deejay on the national rocknetwork "Radio One", to tears.Moving up six places to #3 "LONDON 0, HULL4" by The Housemartins (Go Discs), and still at #1"BROTHERHOOD" by New Order (FactoryRecords).Deposing the Cocteau Twins "LOVE'S EASYTEARS" off the top of the indie singles is "ASK"by The Smiths (Rough Trade). In the British Lp Charts, Bon Jovi's "SLIPPERYWHEN WET" slithers up 12 places to #20. Thegroup also was on this week's national chart TVprogramme "Top Of The Pops" which is very goodgoing for a country where heavy metal fans makeup quite a small, though very vocal, minority.Entering straight in at #16, the excellent new Lp byThe Stranglers, "DREAMTIME". A strong vote ofconfidence for the ever exciting Big AudioDynamite, as "NO. 10, UPPING STREET" enterssmartly at #11. But it's not the highest new entry.Entering the British Top 100 Lps at Number One:"EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - THESINGLES" by The Police.

Turning to the U.K. Top 40 Singles. NEWENTRIES: #40 - "EXPERIMENT FOUR" byKate Bush. No surprises, and undertakes the usualclever crafting that goes into all of Bush's work.#38 "DON'T FORGET ME" by Glass Tiger. Fairlyunremarkable, but solid AOR.#35 "THE FINAL COUNTDOWN" by Europe, agroup who originates from Switzerland and whoalso churns out American -style AOR. If GlassTiger's your station's bag, you should enjoy this,too.#33 "THE GHOST TRAIN" by Madness. A fondfarewell to the nutty boys with this, their last single.Going out with a whimper rather than a bang.Highest New Entry at #20 for Spandau Ballet's"THROUGH THE BARRICADES".

CLIMBERS: Up nine to #25 "THIS IS THEWORLD CALLING" by Bob Geldof. A light, breezy, hook -laden song with lots of famous peoplehelping out, like Annie and Dave from theEurythmics and Rupert Hine twiddling the knobs.Simple, effective video too.Up 19 to #17 "BREAKOUT" by Swing Out Sister -liked, I think, for its style more than its substance, which might make the trek across the pond a bitdifficult (although Sade eventually did it). Light, jazzy funk and a pretty lead singer who wears allthe right clothes.Up 14 places to #16 "DON'T GIVE UP" by PeterGabriel and Kate Bush. Tremendous, slow, atmospheric stuff off the Lp "So". The video isremarkable. Almost one shot of Pete n' Kate in anembrace. The camera moves slowly around, tocatch Gabriel's face when he's singing, and to Katewhen she's doing the vocal duties. Infinitely moreinteresting than long-legged girls trapped indungeons by monsters, etc.Up 12 places to #15 "LIVIN' ON A PRAYER" byBon Jovi.Up 7 positions to #7, Duran Duran's"NOTORIOUS". It should be put in better steadby also appearing in the "Top Of The Pops" studiothis week.Still number one in the European discos andmoving up II places to #6, "YOU KEEP MEHANGING ON" by Kim Wilde. A superb dancerecord with tremendous production. As suspected, Berlin takes the top spot this weekwith "TAKE MY BREATH AWAY". Regardlessof the fact that it is riding on the back of "TopGun", it's great to see this first-class Americanband receive the recognition it has so far notenjoyed in the U.K. What a good record to do itwith, too.

Finally, you may be already aware that London isrenowned for strange, daring fashion. But are youready for this? Being taken very seriously at theextremely hip Sunday clothes market in CamdenTown, here in London, are hats made out ofpolythene bubble wrap! It's the stuff normally usedfor protective packaging. The hats come in severaldesigns and cost a mere $50 upwards. Now thereare plans for polythene clothes to match. I wonderif these will eventually! replace those satin jacketsyou chaps are so fond of? No?Oh...well, it was just a thought. Toodloo 'til nextweek.
