@greatfoodmag

Welcome to the Great Food Club Handbook 2018! In this edition, for the first time, we’ve decided to list every pub, restaurant, shop and producer we recommend online (as of mid-November 2017). That’s over 500 food and drink independents, all of which have been chosen on merit (no one can buy their way into our recommended list). To give the

list a logical order, we’ve created a huge geographical index starting on p8. Each business in the index has been given the GFC seal of approval by our editorial team. The ones shaded blue were shortlisted or won in the GFC Awards 2017/18 (greatfoodclub.co.uk/awards). And the 200 or so with page numbers next to them – some of our favourites – are profiled in this book.

Since 2010 our aim has been simple: to celebrate the best food and drink independents and to guide you to them. Our criteria couldn’t be simpler: we ask ourselves one question – “would we recommend this independent food or drink business to a discerning friend?” If we would, we profile them on our website and list them in this annual handbook. As GFC members know, we communicate our recommendations (and member offers) via email weekly and via social media daily. So if you’re not a GFC member, why not join so you can stay in touch? Head to our website and follow the links to sign up.

I hope you enjoy – and use – this handbook...

s a child, did you dream of being locked in a sweet shop with instructions to enjoy yourself?

The thought of being given free rein in Gonalston Farm Shop is the grown-up equivalent. Few farm outlets are as vibrant or offer the sheer breadth of high-quality produce.

Shelves are crammed with locally sourced delights and award-winning products. There’s also a fantastic fishmongery, butchery, drinks section, fruit and veg galore and an award-winning cheese and deli counter.

A huge effort is made by the team to stock the best. In a feature looking at Britain’s 50 Best Farm Shops, The Independent wrote of Gonalston: “The range on offer here is quite phenomenal… They really do have everything you could need, and a fair amount of what you don’t but would probably enjoy.”

he Geese & Fountain is a traditional village inn with a rustic feel located at Croxton Kerrial on

the A607 Melton Mowbray to Grantham road. It’s the sort of welcoming, relaxing place where you’ll want to settle in for a few drinks, and if you’re a beer lover you’re in luck because the selection is outstanding. From craft beers and lagers to locally brewed cask ales, there’s something here for everyone. Everything on draught is produced locally and the wine list is 100% organic.

The food is hearty and mainly locally sourced. On our visit we enjoyed bangers and mash on a bed of cabbage, plus a chicken and pesto sandwich. Other temptations include scotch eggs, ploughman’s and homemade pies. All ingredients are fresh, well prepared and good quality. We were driving so had coffee, which was also very pleasant.

edhill Farm Free Range Pork was named Best Producer in the Great Food Awards 2017/18. Run by

Lincolnshire farmers Jane and Terry Tomlinson, it produces its own free-range pork, plus prime grass-fed British Blue beef and Zwartble-cross lamb. Redhill Farm also runs two shops – one on the farm near Gainsborough and another on Lincoln’s Bailgate.

Our awards judges said: “Redhill Farm takes its animals from birth to table. The animals lead fabulously natural lives amongst trees and pastures. This producer takes huge care to reduce stress in its animals’ lives, including at the point of slaughter. It does all its own butchery, plus smoking, pie-making, bacon curing and more at its well-specced, modern production unit on the farm. As a result, Redhill Farm Free Range pork is, in our opinion, the best quality pork you will find

anywhere. Moreover, rather than chasing commercial success at the expense of animal welfare, this producer has kept its integrity. It has shown commitment to ‘local’ over many years, selling mainly to Lincolnshire farmers’ markets. Its new butcher’s shop on Bailgate in Lincoln is a fantastic addition to the city.”

Although Redhill Farm has received prestigious national awards and recognition for its produce, and supply several high-profile chefs and restaurants around the UK, it remains selective about the businesses it works with and continues to choose to sell most of what they produce in person at local farmers’ markets and in their own shops. This ensures the farm remains an ethical small business that values its local customers and concentrates on quality.

If provenance and taste are important to you, look no further.

ulinaris (Latin for “kitchen”) is another fabulous independent business on Cambridge’s foodie

honeypot, Mill Road. This well-stocked deli began life in 2015 and is a fine addition to the ever-expanding line-up of indies on this long stretch of road just a short walk from the city centre.

Inside is an Aladdin’s cave offering more than 1,500 top-quality products. You’ll find a fine range of cheeses (it is especially strong on European varieties) and cured meats, plus organic local milk, superior chocolate and more. Also available are breads, condiments, rare spices, oils, cakes and delicious freshly prepared sandwiches, such as serrano ham, goat’s cheese, pesto, salad and sun-dried tomatoes.

The staff are super-friendly too, as well as being knowledgable and enthusiastic. They will be more than happy to guide you around the enormous selection.

We defy anyone to leave this gem empty handed!

rush Foods from north Norfolk produces premium rapeseed oil and much more besides, including

salad dressings, sauces, egg-free mayonnaise and gluten-free granola.

Operating since 2010, it uses only Norfolk-grown rapeseed oil. Crush Foods’ rapeseed oil is cold-pressed on-site and triple-filtered. Rapeseed oil contains half the saturated fat of extra-virgin olive oil and is high in Omegas 3, 6 and 9.

As well as the original rapeseed oil, Crush now offers a range of infused oils. The dressings and sauces include a tangy honey and mustard sauce, a zingy lemon dressing, and a honey and balsamic dipping oil. There’s egg-free (vegan friendly) mayo, too: garlic and chipotle.

The Crush team have also developed a fantastic selection of gluten-free granola.

Crush Foods products are available in many farm shops, delis and other independent retailers across East Anglia and selected sellers in London and Kent.
