Welcome to the

March edition of

‘The Hampton

Viewer’

I’m pleased to say Spring is in the

air and the cold winter days are

hopefully now behind us. I would like

to remind you that the clocks go

forward 1 hour on 31st March which

happens to be Easter Sunday. I wish

you all a restful and peaceful Easter

weekend. However, if you are looking

for something to do, please see our

‘Local Events’ pages 36 and 37.

This month we will be celebrating

Mothering Sunday. A day when we

give presents, flowers and cards to

our mothers to say ‘Thank you’ for

their love and care. A lot of busy

mums put everything and everyone

before themselves, so perhaps a

voucher for a relaxing facial,

manicure or massage would be really

appreciated (well, it would be in this

house!!!). Of course flowers are always

welcome too! Please look through

the magazine for some of these and

other great gift ideas!

Finally, I hope you all enjoy the

interesting articles and promotional

features this month. As always we

welcome any feedback you may

have and don’t forget to send details

of events happening in your area that

may be of interest to your neighbours.

Have a great month!

LAWN CARE FOR MARCH 2013

See Special Offer below

Moss Moss has been a real threat to lawns

this year, and may be affecting your lawn. Apply a specific moss treatment

now, or get ProLawnCare to spray with

their special Moss Control Treatment. Moss dies in front of your eyes, and it is

best to do it now before the Spring starts, otherwise it will crowd out the

grass and lead to a thin and sparse

lawn.

Mowing Mow at last once a week now; make

sure mower has been serviced and blade replaced or sharpened.

Fertiliser This is the time to feed and weed

(preferably in that order). The fertiliser is predominately Nitrogen in a slow

release form, but it may also need Phosphate and Potassium as well as

vital trace elements to promote a vibrant lawn.

Weed Control Once the weeds and grass are actively

growing a selective herbicide to kill broad leaved weeds such as dandelions,

daisies and clover within the grass can be applied.

Actions required in Spring:

♦ Apply Moss Control Treatment

♦ Mow Lawn At Least Once Per Week ♦ Apply Spring Fertiliser To Produce

Vibrant Green Lawn ♦ Spray Weeds In Lawn With Selective

Herbicide

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice celebrate the Year of the Snake with the launch of the 15th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival!

T o celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices has joined with Gable Events to

launch the 15th Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival. The 2013 Festival takes place on Saturday 15th June on the River Nene at the Embankment, Peterborough and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Over 30 crews representing companies, organisations, clubs & groups of friends from all over Peterborough and the surrounding area are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course. They will all be seeking to become champions whilst also aiming to add to the event’s impressive fund-raising total of more than £200,000 for charity over the years.

Owing to its successful introduction last year, teams will again be racing the smaller 11 person dragon boats and multiple crew discounts are available for those companies wishing to enter more than one team. The Festival will also be taking place on a Saturday for the second year.

Dragon boat racing has an ancient Chinese history and the Festival is a re-enactment of a tragic event that took place more than 2,000 years ago in the kingdom of Chu. Legend has it that falsely accused of treason and exiled by jealous rivals in the government, despairing warrior poet, Qu Yuan, threw himself into the Mi Lo River. Local fishermen rowed out to save the drowning poet and tried to rescue him from vicious fish by beating the water with their paddles. But their attempts failed and every year in Hong Kong a Tuen Ng (Dragon Boat) Festival is held as a mark of respect for the fishermen’s frantic efforts and to commemorate the tragic death of Qu Yuan. The dragon boat’s fierce looking dragon’s heads were added later to ward off evil spirits and in Hong Kong special dumplings are eaten to represent the dumplings that were thrown in to the river to stop the fish eating the mighty Qu’s body.

The 2013 Chinese calendar, is the Year of the Snake. As snakes are known for their pride, cunning and intelligence, this should result in some interesting races! No previous experience is required to take part in the dragon boat racing, just plenty of team spirit. Thankfully, you don’t need the physical strength of Steve Redgrave or the athleticism of Jessica Ennis to be successful as teamwork and timing win the day.

The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. The Festival offers a full day of fun on land as well as water with plenty of activities on the bankside to entertain teams and spectators between races. The event is supported by Peterborough City Council, the Peterborough Telegraph and Heart 102.7.

EACH is the children’s hospice service for families in Peterborough and the surrounding area. They provide care and support wherever the family wishes – in families’ own homes, in hospital or at one of their hospices in Milton, Ipswich & Quidenham.

Debbie Fairhurst, Corporate Fundraiser at EACH, comments: “The money raised through the generosity of the teams taking part in the Dragon Boat Festival is very important to us and will go towards the one-to-one nursing care and support that is so vital to life-threatened local children and their families”. The top fundraisers for EACH will win the charity trophy plus a prize meal at Nando’s, Peterborough.

The Whinge

The Magic Roundabout

L ast month I told you about my lack of

Internet connection and the effect on

my digital life. Well this month I am at

last connected and re-digitized, much to

the relief of my family but to the dismay of

all the local coffee shops!

So you might be forgiven for thinking that I

couldn't possible still be moaning about my

ISP. Unfortunately, the saga continues.

I had to wait a while after I was finally

connected before I could make a final

complaint and claim for a refund for the

period when I had no service. Mainly

because I had so much catching up to do,

but also to let some of the caffeine leach

from my system. Otherwise I would have

been speaking at a rate that no ordinary

mortal could understand let alone a

service desk operative.

Now as it happens I clearly didn't leave it

long enough. My first problem was that

what I wanted to do - complain - wasn't an

option I was presented with by the

automatic answering system. I doubted

that this was because this was an option

very few people wanted so there must be

a perfectly logical explanation for this.

Maybe there was a specific number, so I

checked. But no I had the correct number

so I persevered. I later found out that "we

don't have any specific complaints

department, so we don't provide that as

an option".

Eventually, I got to speak to a human. The

wrong one apparently, so I was transferred.

To another wrong person, who transferred

me again. This time I, allegedly got through

to a person who should be able to help me!

However, I found out that I was not entitled

to any refund for the service I hadn't

received because I didn't have a

complaint registered against my account:

I had made a total of four complaints, one

of which I escalated two levels of

management. But it didn't show on my

account.

So now I had to phone back to try and

make a complaint about the fact that my

previous complaints had not been

registered and that the "not the complaints"

department were unable to refund me for a

service they hadn't provided me with but

had charged me for. Read that bit again, I

promise it will make sense eventually.

After I phoned back and was transferred a

number of times again I finally got through

to someone who did help me. She

explained that she just worked in wi-fi

support and only really dealt with technical

issues, but I think she actually felt sorry for

me: either that or she sensed the steam

escaping from my head. She said "I don't

know what they're on about I can clearly

see the complaints on your account". She

spoke to someone and all of a sudden I had

the refund I wanted. What a drama!

Next time I need help with my broadband I

think I'll phone the gas board because

obviously I'll get a faster response.

In The Night Sky #24

L ast month I introduced two major comets that we should see this year. In March we will see the first of these - PANSTARRS.

On March 5 this comet will be at its closest to Earth at a mere 165 million km. to put this in context the sun is on average 150 million km from Earth. However, this will not be the best time to see the comet. That will come later in the month. That said at only 165 m km away you should be able to see PANSTARRS.

A few days later on March 10 the comet will make its closest approach to the Sun at just 45 million km, this is known as its perihelion. After this you should get the best views of the comet in the evening sky. On March 12 the comet is projected to be seen in the early evening along with a crescent Moon just a mere 4 degrees away which should be worth seeing.

For most of March you should be able to see PANSTARRS unaided but as we move into April you will need a small telescope.

PANSTARRS (Panoramic Survey Telescope

and Rapid Response Systems) is a Prototype

telescope system that is planned to be con-

structed on the extinct volcano Haleakala in

Hawaii - the comet was named after this

system rather than any individual because a

whole team of observers, computer scientists

& astronomers were involved in the discovery

at the University of Hawaii in Manoa.

On the 12th shortly after sunset and as the

sky darkens look south-west towards the

Moon and slightly below towards the horizon

you should be able to see PANSTARRS

subject to cloud cover of course. No pictures

this month because there aren’t many that

exist yet, but hopefully I shall be able to

share some with you next month.

Happy Night Watching!

quality carpets, flooring and curtains at

competitive prices.

The carpets range from £5 to £50 per

metre and curtains start from £10 per metre.

You are guaranteed to find a beautiful

carpet or set of curtains within your price

range.

Ray and Paul Interiors are a family run

business that has flourished over thirty

successful years. Long established in

Oxford Road, Millfield, they have recently

re-located to new premises at Shrewsbury

Avenue, Woodston Business Centre.

Ray and Paul interiors pride themselves on

the ultimate customer experience. Their

sales people are trained at the highest

level, giving their customers the best

experience possible.

Whether you are looking to buy or just to

enquire, all customers are treated equally.

For discerning customers with large or small

budgets you’re sure to find something to

suit your needs. Whether you are buying

flooring and curtains or you are looking to

Customers are greeted with a glass of

Champagne and a friendly member of

interiors believe shopping for carpets and

curtains should be just like shopping for

clothes. Areas of the store are dedicated

to display furnishings in room settings with

different colour schemes and furniture so

you can develop an idea to suit your taste.

Paul Shaw, owner of the company said

“You wouldn’t pick a shirt displayed in a

packet and buy it straight away. You

would want to try it on or see it on a

mannequin with other items before you

commit to making an investment”.

With the understanding that some men

may leave their partners to take care of

the finer details of the purchase, they have

provided an area with a comfortable sofa,

magazines and a glass of wine where they

can relax while waiting.

Unlike big department

stores, Ray and Paul use

their own professional

in-house machinists,

guaranteeing you an

For March 2013 - By Astrologer Christine Chalklin

PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20 Happy birthday Pisces! Five planets are

in your sign and may well mean that this

is your best month ever. Prepare your

creative insights and focus on your goals

and ambitions. Mars leaves your sign on the 12th

,

but produces boundless energy in fiery Aries. The

powerful new moon in your sign on the 11th

brings

clarity and focus to many areas of your life.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 March is a very introspective month for

usually extrovert and passionate Aries.

Always ready to get up and go, this month

you will have to step back, take stock and

reflect. You will feel the energy shift as Mars, your

ruling planet, moves into your sign on the 12th

,

bringing an abundance of creative energy.

TAURUS APRIL 21 - MAY 21 March brings a new kind of energy for

Taurus. Soft and gentle Venus, your

ruling planet, is in dreamy Pisces until the

22nd

. Well placed for love & compassion,

particularly within your social circle, meaningful

friendships are on the horizon. The full moon in

Libra on the 27th

brings a new opportunity.

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUNE 21 March begins with no less than five

planets in the most prominent position of

your chart. Career expansion on all levels

is possible now as your goals and

ambitions continue to be favoured. Creativity is in

the spotlight; let your imagination run wild as this

should be a month to be remembered!

CANCER JUNE 22 - JULY 22 March brings you a new kind soft and

gentle energy, your heart is open and you

may be ready to broaden your horizons.

The new moon on the 11th

is pivotal, and

you should also feel a restored sense of courage and

confidence at the Spring Equinox on the 20th

as the

Sun energises your career sector.

LEO JULY 23 - AUGUST 23 This month puts a big focus on all your

financial dealings, legacies and resources.

A review may well be necessary now.

Motivational Mars leaps into fiery Aries

on the 12th and coupled with the new moon, things

could begin to turn around now. Be creative and use

your imagination for a new project.

VIRGO AUG. 24 - SEPT. 22 March brings your undivided attention

to your personal relationships. With

your ruler Mercury & four other planets

in Pisces, you’ll examine your feelings

and beliefs. It’s important to consider what may

no longer be working for you, take a deep breath

and have the courage to change things.

LIBRA SEPT. 23 - OCT. 23 March highlights your work, your health

and all your daily routines. Five planets

in Pisces challenge you to tune in and

examine these areas. As your career

expands, you’ll want to be sure that you work in

the most rewarding way possible. Venus moving

to Aries on the 22nd

brings new and exciting ideas.

SCORPIO OCT. 24 - NOV. 22 March brings a dramatic shift to your

personal energy as creative & innovative

ideas are there to be grabbed. Your

self-esteem should be an all time high

& you’ll find the courage to take risks in areas you

wouldn’t normally consider. Mars moves to Aries

on the 12th

and brings new opportunities your way.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 This month turns your attention to your

home and family. The concentrated

energy of five planets in your domestic

area leaves you no choice. This is a

great time for extending and improving your

accommodation. As Mars moves into passionate

Aries on the 12th

, your love life gathers momentum!

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Reassessing your life and career goals is

most important now. With five planets

in the communication and learning

sector of your chart, you’ll be moved to

broaden your intellectual horizons. Energetic

Mars in Aries gains speed in the domestic area of

your chart after the 12th

and it’s time for some

home improvements!

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 March turns the spotlight on financial

arrangements and you may well be

looking at new creative ways to expand

your income. It’s all change as fiery

Mars moves into energetic Aries on the 12th

, your

confidence improves and you really do begin to

put your beliefs and your values into action.
