Our Stories……

Getting interviewed by two people. One interviewer was very impressed from my achievements and trying to find out that what motivated me to come for MBA. I was not interested in energy program that time so I was trying to frame my answers to convince him. Other interviewer was just observing me from 20 min and then he started putting me down by saying that you have done nothing OOTB yet. Most of the ppl are doing eng. and we all know how IT recruits.

At that time he broke my confidence in to several pieces and I formed a general impression that he is so pedantic. I got the intuition that he is not going to select me.

But when I got my call letter, I realize that he did so because he knew somewhere that I am framing my answers so he put me in situation of stress interview so that I put myself more strongly and now after reading HE ,I found that I was wrong at that time because he is one of the best and easygoing teachers of great lakes, a role model and a motivator and what not.

I generally used to score well in all the subjects in school except one which my class teacher used to teach me. So in every PTM , she used to tell my parents that I need to work hard on the other subjects as they mattered a lot. But once what happened that we entered in wrong class of teacher who took the classes of the subjects in which I was good at. I knew what usually took place in those PTM’s and hence there was no point in making eye contact with mom or my teacher.

But what I did not know was that today “ halo effect “ was going to save me, so it started with good remarks about her 3 subjects. Then these complements transferred from studies to sports, she asked me if I took part in the cultural event and as soon I said yes ,she was like “there is no doubt that he must’ve nailed it.

So what happened due to this was that my good attribute in studies was transferred to other extracurricular as well. After reading and understanding the concept of Halo, I always portray my strongest points or attributes in front of other people, this not only hides my weak points but also makes them think that I am good at them too.

My first job posting was in Ganjam, Odisha where I was working as a Process Engineer. The first six months I was working over there as a trainee engineer. We used to work over there in shifts. One day my mentor was not present and one of the other trainee’s mentor was with me in the shift helping me learn to operate the plant. I already had an overall good impression in the plant as I was on of the most sincere trainee they had in the past couple of years. But that day this mentor suddenly started bombarding me with questions from various angles regarding operations of plant.I was barely able to answer his questions. After a gruelling one hour session with that person he said I knew nothing about operations and scolded me a lot. And after that session, I started disliking that person. I was very unhappy that day. I was after all a trainee. I am not supposed to know all things about operations in such a short time. I went to my manager thinking of telling him about the incident but I couldn’t. A feeling of hatred and disgust had been created in my mind for that person. After that incident, I didn’t talk with him nor saw his face in the plant for the next three months.

When I came over here and started studying about Organization Behavior that I came to know I was under the influence of HALO effect that time and was almost instantly able to relate this incident with my studies.

Receiving scolding and punishment by principle in front of a new teacher lead to creation of a wrong image in that teacher’s mind . Later when she became my class teacher she always assumed that I’m responsible for almost everything which happens wrong in class. And I was always wondering what’s wrong with her .

While I was working in Wipro, I was first placed in Sears merchandise accounting team. My work was related to pure accounting related activities. I was able to perform very well in that, also two times I get best performer of the month award. Suddenly there was urgent vacancy in Reconciliation team of Sears. The team leader of reconciliation asked my manager if he could suggest good and efficient guy My manager suggested me.

Next days I was called for internal interview in reconciliation team. Looking to my performance in Merchandise Accounting team they directly sent me to the hit the floor and perform reconciliation without any training on excel. I was not able to perform well in Reconciliation team because I had very little knowledge of excel which was not sufficient enough to perform the activities of Reconciliation. Soon my performance level decline drastically and many time my new team leader scolded me for making error.

But during those initial period of two months I was not able to guess why they not provided me proper training on excel even if it was very much required in this process. Now I think that the reason behind was that they had concluded that my excel knowledge will be good enough since I performed very well in the pervious team.
