JULY ART WORKSHOPS

Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park and the Oakland Museum of California

Saturday, April 16, 2016 8:15 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

$80 members; $115 non-members The first stop on this trip will be a visit to the Rosie the

Riveter World War II Home Front. This is a National Historical Park located in Richmond. The park preserves and interprets the legacy of the United States home front during World War II; including the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards, the Victory ship Red Oak Victory, a tank factory, housing developments and other facilities built to support America’s entry into World War II. In particular, the role of women and African Americans in war industries is explored and honored.

The final destination will be a visit to the Oakland Museum of California where lunch is available at the Blue Oak Café. The featured exhibit at this stop is Altered State: Marijuana in California. The Oakland Museum is the first museum to showcase an exhibition about the policies and social issues surrounding marijuana in California today. There will be time to explore the rest of the Museum’s three stories including an exhibit about the impact of bees and tiny insects. The permanent Gallery of California History is also well worth a visit.

For additional information, contact tour escort Pam Arana at 209-951-2498 or 209-601-2172. For reservations contact Merylene Marengo at 209-940-6311 or [email protected]. LACP News

Young will present her findings on Victorian mourning practices.

At the June 1 meeting and potluck luncheon, newly elected officers will be installed for 2016-2017.

As pioneer forebears formed the auxiliary in June of 1892, the LACP celebrates 124 years as an auxiliary in June. LACP welcomes as members women who are descendants of pioneers who came to California before the end of 1854. Guests are welcome to attend the monthly LACP presentations. Contact president Patricia Hose at (209) 462-3278 one week prior if you plan to attend.

Truax automatic ore car, Globe Iron Works

As part of repurposing the Pioneer Room from a history gallery to an art gallery, it was necessary to relocate a number of large historic artifacts to several of our other galleries. Five of these items are now on view in the Holt Memorial Hall and two are currently part of the Vehicle Gallery displays.

The new “residents” of the Holt Hall relate to Stockton’s storied manufacturing, agricultural and transportation heritage. They include a Globe Iron Works’ Truax automatic ore car, an H.C. Shaw sulky gang plow, Tillie Lewis’ copper vacuum cooker that once rendered tomato juice into tomato paste, a centrifugal irrigation pump made by the Sterling Pump Corporation, and a mooring cleat from the early days of the Port of Stockton.

The Vehicle Gallery, whose displays examine Stockton’s firefighting heritage, now includes the clockwork mechanism and bell from the first San Joaquin County courthouse (1854-1888). For decades the town clock and bell kept Stocktonians aware of the passing hours and the bell summoned the city’s volunteer fire companies into service. This building was razed to make way for the second courthouse (1890-1961) and the clock and bell were moved to a tower atop the Hunter Street Fire Station. When that tower was condemned in 1933, the bell and clockworks were donated to the Haggin.

On your next visit, be sure to include stops in the Holt Hall and Vehicle Gallery to view some old friends in their new homes.

It's not too late to view the longest running student art exhibition in the country! The 85th Annual McKee Student Art Contest & Exhibition is on display through May 8, 2016.

This annual event features the work of student artists from kindergarten through grade 12. The Museum's Tuleburg and West galleries are filled with two- and three-dimensional art works created in crayon, colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, oil and acrylic paint. There are also photographs, sculptures, collages, mixed-media pieces and digital short films.

This year's exhibition judge is Ruth Santee, an Oakland-based artist and tenured professor at San Joaquin Delta College. Santee is also the director and co-owner of Transmission Gallery, a contemporary gallery located in the heart of Oakland.

The Haggin Museum’s art collection is once again receiving national attention as some of our paintings are heading to Washington D.C. We were recently approached by the office of the Honorable Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives, requesting that we loan a painting for his office. The Speaker was particularly interested in borrowing a painting by Albert

Bierstadt because his work highlights some of the beautiful landscapes of our country.

With our current project of reimagining our art collection underway, we were unsure if we would be able to meet the request. However, after providing the Speaker’s office with an inventory of paintings that were available for a multi-year loan, Speaker Ryan and his wife requested five paintings. We are honored to be loaning the following works: In the Yosemite Valley by Albert Bierstadt; Cloud Effect, Estes Park, Colorado by Albert Bierstadt; Stagecoach by Edward Lampson Henry; Untitled by William Hart; and Kneedeep in Summer by William Hart.

This is not the first request of this type for the Haggin. During his first term as President of the United States, Ronald Reagan requested Looking Up the Yosemite Valley by Albert Bierstadt, which was displayed in the White House Roosevelt Room. The painting reminded him of his home state of California.
