Welcome back to campus U students! Yes, we know you’d rather be anywhere but class (especially if OSH continues to remain below 40 degrees), but no need to worry, The GurU and Union Programming Council have all you need to escape the monotony of college life. While you were away on winter break—hopefully shreddin’ some powder on the slopes or maybe working on your tan at the beach—the Union Programming Council was already busy preparing to make this semester even better than last!

In the fall, 7,000 of you attended our first Crimson Nights, others celebrated German heritage at Oktoberfest, and some just enjoyed a free meal on us at Food for Finals. If you are wondering how we could ever top that, don’t worry, we have plenty of fun events in store for every student on campus. From another unforgettable Crimson Nights to our Student Film Festival to Date Night, Union Programming Council is ready to make this semester jammed packed with student programming.

When you’re in need of a break from studying, turn to the Union Programming Council and for all your student life needs!

We love U,

-Union Programming Council

City Life 3

So Valentine’s Day is coming up? I don’t really know…I’m one of those boring single people you sometimes hear about. The rest of you, however, are probably feeling a little pressure to make this holiday special for that certain someone. Unfortunately, thanks to tuition and textbooks, very few University of Utah students can afford caviar and person-al Seal concerts (curse you and your inflated standards, The Bachelor). However, with a little bit of creativity and a whole lot of heart, a U Valentine’s Day can still be special even if you have Financial Aid on speed-dial.

As anyone who has been on campus in the evening can tell you, the Salt Lake Valley regularly sees spectacular sunsets and beautiful nighttime lighting. With good timing and perhaps a small investment for dessert, an entire date can be made around watch-ing the sun go down and the city come alive. There are several great places to citywatch, and all are within throwing distance of the University. You could take a short hike to the block U on the hill, check out the roof of the public library downtown, sit on the steps of the Capitol building, or even try the second floor of the Marriot Library. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, of course, there are plenty of longer hikes available in the nearby mountains which reward the dedicated with a spectacular vista.

You’ll notice that everything I just mentioned is fun but also friendly to those with small budgets (aka everyone). One great thing about most local businesses is that they make an effort to bring us humble students good deals. I’m not much of a massage guy myself, but a little birdie told me that if you make a reservation with the Utah School of Massage Therapy, you can get an hour-long couples massage for only $70. Once the stress bub-bles have been chased away, you can unwind with any one of the dozens of restaurants near campus, especially the ma-and-pa outfits, which offer great deals on filling food.

After your stomach is full and your worries are gone, take your special sports buff to the University event of your choice: On February 12, both our men’s and women’s bas-ketball teams have their rivalry games against BYU, and February 11 is the Women’s Gymnastics meet against Washington. Go Utes!

Remember that, as generic as it may sound, it’s the thought that counts. If you work your creative muscles and put some thought into it, the most memorable and meaningful date in the world can also be the least expensive. Unplug the computer, turn off the phone, and follow your heart. That’s what I always do.

Student Life6

Although it’s a commonly held misogynist belief that women’s sports can’t thrive on a college campus, Red Rocks gymnastics meets are the most attended sporting event at Utah after football. Indeed, this year’s gymnastics MUSS numbers have already sur-passed 1,000 students.

Did you know, after football, rugby is the biggest team at the University of Utah? Chanc-es are though, you probably weren’t even aware Utah has a rugby team. However, Utah’s rugby team is among the nation’s best and is also the 2010 Sevens National Champions.

The Scrummin’ Utes have been on campus since the late 1970s, but until this year, have gone without a student section. This season, the first official Rugby Ruckus—the equivalent to the MUSS—is being launched!

Student can expect a season jam-packed with action, with the team kicking off the year on March 5 against BYU. The match drew nearly 6,000 fans last year, making it one of the most attended of all of the BYU-Utah sporting events.

To join the newest, loudest student section on campus, visit utahrugby.org and click the “Rugby Ruckus” button in the top-right hand corner. For just $15, you get free admis-sion at all Utah home games, a t-shirt and an exclusive pre-game tailgate at the BYU game.

Football season is over, but that doesn’t mean your school spirit has to go into hibernation until fall MUSS registration. Consider joining these student sections to give you plenty of opportunities to belt out “A Utah man am I!”

Utah is one of the most successful gymnastics programs in the country, tied for first with the most national championships (10). The Red Rocks are also the only sports team in the NCAA to appear in every since championship of their respective sport. That’s right; Utah is the only team to make a title appear-ance every year. Utah also holds every single women’s gymnastics attendance record, and had the more fans at their home events than every single other NCAA women’s sport. Gymnastics averages more fans at their home meets than were in attendance at January’s Utah-BYU men’s basketball game.

To show your true Ute spirit, join the gymnastics MUSS at any home meet or register online at www.alumni.utah.edu/muss .

Cost: $15 and includes a MUSS t-shirt, as well as free admission to all home meets.
