September Meeting Program Bog Plants and Gardening

Keith Amelung presented the September GCMG educational program on bog gardening. Keith is a for-mer Bexar County Master Gardener that has owned a nursery in Kendall County and is presently a Land-scape consultant. Keith’s program included a slide show and a question and answer period. You can reach Keith at www.havespade.com

Keith explained the “How to” to develop a bog garden. First you need to select your site. He advises to keep away from trees, bog gardens need sun. He suggested looking at an area where your downspout runs and capturing the rain water for your bog garden, or setting up swales and develop a Rain Gar-dens. Next you need to excavate the area. He reported that some gardens are no deeper then 6-8 inches. He suggested several types of plastic sheeting for the liners and to protect it using old carpeting underneath. Thick pads of newspaper can also be used. The plastic ends are covered with edging mate-rial such as rocks. He uses clay and pea gravel as fill in the garden. For running water you need gravel, standing water use clay.

He suggested a wide variety of plants including the star hibiscus, Mexican petunias, elephant ears, water iris, corkscrew, hootenanny, lizards’ tail and cannas. He cautioned that plants love the water and will rap-idly spread, so plant sparingly. He also cautioned some of the plants are problems if they get into public water causing choking out other plant life.

He discussed a product called Terra Sorb which holds moisture for the potted plant, such as the hibiscus which requires large amounts of water. The product can be purchased at Home depot or on the internet. He said one teaspoon can hold 2 cups of water.

He encouraged having fish in your pond as they help fertilize your plants.

Two nurseries he suggested for resources were Water Garden Gems in Marion, and Nelson’s Water Gardens in Katy, Texas. Submitted by Sandy Foss.

Two GCMG Get Texas Superstar Training

Forty-two master gardeners from 20 counties recently attended the three-day State Master Gardener Texas Superstar Training held recently at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service facility in San Antonio. Two Guadalupe County Master Gardeners, John Lewicki (pictured) and Bob Cox, were among the trainees. This event was the first-ever statewide program focused on the Texas Superstar and provided for Master Gardener volunteer horticulture pro-gram volunteers. David Rodriguez, AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture in Bexar County coordinated the training.

The Texas Superstar program is a collaboration of AgriLife Extension, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and the state’s commercial nursery industry. It actu-

ally began in San Antonio 38 years ago with the study of vegetables by now retired AgriLife Extension horticulturist Dr. Jerry Parsons. It later incorporated ornamental plants and fruit trees. To get the Texas Superstar designation, plants and trees undergo several years of extensive field trials and must be proven to be both beautiful and Texas-tough. For the program, a variety of Texas Superstar program “classics” were set out for viewing, including fire bush, plumbago, John Fanick phlox, New Gold lantana, Pride of Barbados and hibiscus, along with Green Magic broccoli. Newer offerings included mandarin and satsuma citrus plants crossed with a more cold-hardy species for better additional performance in far North Texas. Article & photo submitted by Bob Cox

Work Day at Gutierrez Xeriscape Park

We had 4 Master Gardeners, 5 Steele High School Key Club members, and 6 Art Club members working on Saturday, September 19th, from 9 am to noon. We pruned the Crepe Myrtles and Desert Willows, installed the concrete bench donated from the Community Garden, mulched the newer plants, and did more art work in the Gazebo and on the back of the main sign. We also thinned out the butterfly garden but left enough nectar plants to help the Monarch Butterflies on their journey to Mexico. Thank you Com-missioner Wolverton for getting the mulch. We will have another workday in Oct/Nov to finish mulching the trees and plants and get ready to sow wildflowers. Submitted by John Lewicki.

It’s Time to Recertify and Pay Your 2016 Dues

October is here and with it comes the opportunity to recertify as a Master Gardener for another year and pay your 2016 dues. Why do we pay dues? Dues pay for our administrative costs, the paper we use to print newsletters, postage for those members who do not have Internet capabilities, speaker costs and handouts at our membership meetings, etc. Dues also pay for the State mandated three-year back-ground check for our membership to support the Child Protection Act. Dues and other money-making projects paid for our lap-top computer for our monthly meeting and the mobile speaker system we use for off site programs.

Chapter 6 of the Policies and Procedures Manual, approved by the voting membership in May 2014, re-quires the following to recertify and pay your dues.

Complete 12 hours of volunteer service

Complete 6 hours of continuing education

Report hours in the on-line Volunteer Management System (VMS)

Complete and sign the annual Texas Master Gardener Volunteer Agreement

If you were a member of Class 25 or your background check expires in 2016, complete and sign the Volunteer Consent for Criminal Background History Check

Guadalupe County Master Gardeners will begin collecting 2016 dues at the October Membership Meet-ing for those Certified Master Gardeners who have met their recertification requirements. Please remem-ber the Membership Chair and/or Treasurer cannot accept your dues until you have reported the minimum hours required for re-certification in VMS, completed and signed your Texas Master Gardener Volunteer Agreement, and completed and signed your Volunteer Consent for Criminal Background His-tory Check if it expires in 2016.

For Class 26 students:

If you certified in December 2014, to recertify for 2016, you must complete twelve (12) hours of volun-teer service and six (6) hours of continuing education, report those hours in VMS not later than 31 Dec 2015, complete and sign the annual Texas Master Gardener Volunteer Agreement and pay your $20 dues.

If you certified in 2015, to recertify in 2016, you have met your volunteer and continuing hours require-ment. Once you complete and sign the annual Texas Master Gardener Volunteer Agreement, you may pay your $20 dues at the October meeting, but must pay them not later than 31 Dec 2015.

Class 27 Student Recap

Hello all! I am a novice gardener and I am thoroughly enjoying this class. The information is absolutely amazing and very practical. On August 26, our presenter was Liz Palfini. She taught us about basic bot-any and how plants grow. She took what could have been a very technical boring class and brought the concepts alive for us. It was fun and enjoyable. The next week, September 2nd, Kathy Carroll, Bob Tew-eles and lot of angels exposed us to the joy of propagation. (Continued on following page)

(Student Report - Continued from prior page)

We listened to lectures and then got to get our hands dirty and practiced what we just heard about. Now, each and every one of us, is trying to keep these plants alive because we have been told that we will re-port on them later in the class. The next week, Sept 9th, brought us a real treat with composting with Lee Franzel in the morning and roses with Peggy Jones in the afternoon. I have tried composting once be-fore and it was a failure so I was not looking forward to this class. However, Lee came through and gave us some wonderful information and it does not appear anywhere as complicated as I thought it was. By the time this is printed, I should have a pile started. Peggy Jones loves roses and it was so evident in her class. I am very thankful that she is one of Guadalupe County’s own since I will be getting advice from her for years to come. The next week, September 16th, was the class I had been waiting for; Grow-ing Vegetables with Patty Leander. After listening to her, I want to plant one of everything including beets which I do not like. And finally on September 23rd, Dennis Hale returned to teach us about lawns. Dennis had taught our first class on August 12th and he was just as informative the second time around. There was so much information in the second class but my favorite was the section about good perform-ing basic plants for our area. As a novice gardener, it gives me a good place to start to update my land-scaping. I am looking forward to the rest of the class and becoming an active member of this wonderful organization.

Will eight inches of rain and flash flooding stop Master Gardeners from holding their conference? The answer is a resounding NO! The rain was enough to close local schools, but not gardeners who want to learn and interact with fellow gardeners from all over the country. This year the International Master Gar-deners Conference was held September 22-25 at MidAmerica Center in Council Bluffs, IA. The rain and yes, it did rain 3 of the 4 days of the conference (2 of those days was very heavy rain), which did make commuting slow and wet and some of the outside tours soggy.

The conference was attended by more than 740 people from 39 states, Canada and South Korea. Texas had 27 attendees. Accents from many places could be heard as you walked through the conference rooms and you never knew who you would be sitting by at breakfast, lunch or in a break out session. I enjoyed interacting with everyone new I met. Master Gardeners are very interesting people and discus-sions were held on travel, depression glass, cooking, Monarch watch and tagging a Monarch, dog show-ing—who knew they had interests other than gardening!

The vendors came from as far as Canada and one could purchase anything from worm castings to beau-tiful jewelry, from a garden hose and nozzle to rocks and gemstones, from plants to pictures of plants, books on a variety of subjects, a floating rain gauge and many more interesting items.

The keynote speakers were J Schwanke (a fourth generation florist), Mark Hirsch (a photographer) and Gary Oppenheimer (Ending the Waste of Food). All speakers were informative, funny, inspiring and defi-nitely held my interest. The conference may have been wet on the outside, but very warm and refreshing on the inside. The next IMGC conference will be held in Portland, Oregon on July 10-14, 2017 at the Oregon Convention Center. Make your plans now to attend. This was my fourth IMGC conference and I am looking forward to my next!

Community Garden - Updates

9/25 - It has been about two weeks since I updated you on the garden and the time has flown by. We have had a few cooler mornings and the beans and tomatoes have begun blooming again. New trans-plants of cauliflower, broccoli, collards, spinach, Swiss chard, bok choy, celery and kohlrabi have been planted. We have seeded in radishes and beets. The mulch has all been top dressed after the weeds were removed. All in all the garden looks pretty good. Our current harvests are made up of okra, pep-pers, eggplant, and watermelons. Last Tuesday we picked a 35 pound Black Diamond watermelon, our largest this year. I will get some pictures of the okra;.here we have to do a little bragging as they are over 8 feet tall. Removing them when they are done for the year is going to be a real challenge. The harvest total so far this year is 3,278 pounds 2 ounces. Tomorrow is our 2nd Annual Garden and Craft Fair starting at 10 a.m. and we hope to see all of you there. A special thanks to all for the extra push to-day! Ann & Dale Odvody Thanks to all of you that came out to our Fair. It warmed my heart to see all the Master Gardeners come out and enjoy the classes and the crafts. Loved seeing you and your dog, Jose. A special thank you to my helpers John L, Cynthia L. Ann O, Dale O, Terri V, Toni G, Joyce B, Kim D, Joyce F, Lillian A. With-out their help and support it couldn't have been done. A very special thanks to the volunteers that helped set up and operate booths and all kinds of things. The new class is outstanding from helping us harvest and dig, plant, etc. and then at the Fair running around helping everyone. Even cooking. What a class!!! Special thanks also to the adult probationers that did all the setting up for us. It was a terrific day, a very good turnout, and we doubled everything from last year. So we are able to continue with new beds and crops!!! You earned your wings on Satur-day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. God bless you all. Mary Bowe

Plant Sale Propagation Workshop

I expect we will have room for a few more attendees at our Propagation Workshop and I invite you (Master Gardeners) to attend. This is a participation workshop from 9 AM until about noon on Saturday, October 3rd at the Guadalupe AgriLife Extension building.

Goals of the Workshop will be: Provide a refresher demonstration on Asexual Propagation Techniques, Propagate a few plants for you, Propagate a lot of plants for our plant sale next April, and Have fun!

We will provide "soil" and two cups and two zip-lock bags for the stem cuttings. It would be helpful if you could bring some "gently used" 4-inch and "1-gallon" pots and an inch of newspapers.

If you have some plants that you would like to try propagating, please bring some cuttings. I ask that you research the internet about propagation of the plants you will bring to determine their specific technique requirements. In general, cuttings should be either semi-hardwood or soft wood, and avoid flowering stems. Water the plants on Thursday or Friday, take cuttings Saturday morning and place them in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel, close bag and keep as cool as possible. 10 - 20 cuttings will be plenty for the workshop.

The hard part - you will need to "nurse" the plants intended for the Plant Sale until April 23rd!!

Please e-mail me with any questions, Bob Teweles [email protected]
