From the Desk of the Village PresidentFrom the Desk of the Village President

As I write this, Governor Evers has issued a State of Emergency

due to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak. Schools are closed and everyone is asked to practice social distancing and handwashing. During this stressful time, I ask everyone to follow the guidelines of the CDC to slow the spread of the virus. I also ask that we look out for one another. Deliver groceries to your elderly neighbor or call someone who may be lonely. Spread kindness and be patient during this unprecedented time. We are all in this together.

The Village has also taken a number of steps to continue essential services, and those services and events that aren’t essential have been canceled. You can still call the Village at (262) 246-5200 with any questions. The health and safety of the public and our employees is our number one priority.

Summer is quickly approaching, and hopefully soon we’ll be outside enjoying each other’s company once again. This is particularly exciting this year because we are opening a new splash pad, inclusive playground, multi-sport courts, and pavilion. The grand opening for these new amenities, which we are calling The Grove at Village Park, is Saturday, May 30, from noon to 6 p.m. The splash pad will be running and we’ll have food trucks and the first Pints in the Park event of the summer. I hope you will join me for this fun community celebration.

This summer also brings the reconstruction of Maple Avenue between Plainview Road and Highway K/Lisbon Road. This project is expected to last into November. This is the last arterial road in the Village in need of reconstruction. After this project, we will return to the annual neighborhood road maintenance

program. It’s been a tough few years of road construction, but I’m pleased that we have arterial roads that will serve this community for 50 years.

The Pints in the Park traveling beer garden will return in 2020. The events include craft beer and rotating food trucks. The 2020 dates are May 30 as part of the Grand Opening of The Grove at Village Park; June 25 at Prides Crossing Park; July 23 at Madeline Park; and August 16 as part of the Main Street Block Party at the Civic Center. The June and July park locations were chosen by the public through a Facebook poll. Events such as these are one of the many things that make Sussex special.

Sussex is a strong and vibrant community, and I’m proud to call it home.

Thanks for choosing Sussex,

Greg Goetz

ENGINEERING/PUBLIC WORKS

Maple Avenue Reconstruction Underway

Maple Avenue is being reconstructed this year from: • just south of Johanssen Court to just north of Clover Drive;

• Main Street to just north of the railroad tracks; • and Good Hope Road to Plainview Road.Construction is scheduled to be completed by mid-November.

The Town of Lisbon plans to resurface Maple Avenue from CTH K to just south of Johanssen Court, and plans to add a right-turn lane on Maple Avenue at CTH K.

Those portions of Maple Avenue under construction will be closed during construction with access only for those with driveways on Maple Avenue. A detour is posted, which will direct drivers to use CTHs K and F, Waukesha Avenue, Good Hope Road and Woodside Road to travel across the Village. We ask that you please use alternate routes for your own safety and the safety of those who live and are working in the construction zone.

The intersection of Maple Avenue and Clover Drive will be closed for a few months during the project. The intersections at Main Street, Good Hope Road, and Plainview road will remain open during construction.

The Maple Avenue project includes concrete pavement, curb, gutter, sidewalks, storm sewer, street trees, decorative street lighting and the road will be slightly wider.

Street trees and decorative street lighting will also be installed along Maple Avenue from north of Clover Drive to Main Street and from the railroad tracks to Good Hope Road. These portions of Maple Avenue will remain open to traffic while the work takes place.

Maple Avenue is the last of the arterial streets in the Village in need of reconstruction. The work needs to be done because the pavement condition is poor. Reconstruction gives us the opportunity to strengthen the base under the road, improve drainage, improve sight distances, and improve pedestrian access.

Stay up to date with construction activities by signing up for a biweekly email from the Village on our website at villagesussex.org/eblasts.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Millions of dollars are

lost to phone scams each year, and a huge amount of that money is stolen from ordinary people. Someone will call and try to trick or bully you into giving them your hard-earned money or information they can use to access your financial accounts. Here are some of the most common phone scams and what to do if you get one.

Social Security Spoofing CallsYou receive a call from the Social Security Administration requesting information, asking you to call a certain phone number or press a number to be connected with an agent.

HANG UP! Social Security rarely contacts persons by phone unless you have ongoing business with them and they never make threats about arrest or legal action.

Grandparent ScamA person calls pretending to be a grandchild who’s been involved in an accident or legal trouble and needs money immediately.

Don’t send money, gift cards, checks, or provide any personal information. Try to reach your loved one or their parent on a correct phone number to verify their whereabouts. If you cannot reach your loved one, contact your local police department for assistance.

Phony Charitable OrganizationsScammers impersonate charities such as fire, police, children’s and veteran’s organizations, as well as natural disaster charities.

To find reputable charities or to support victims of natural disasters, seek out local opportunities or look for an organization’s charity rating on Charity Navigator.

Cellphone Carrier ScamYou get a call from your cell phone carrier asking for a verification code.

HANG UP! Phone scammers use information you provide to reset your password and take over your cell account.

Gift Card ScamScammers call impersonating loan companies, your phone, cable, or utility company, and police departments. The caller will ask you to buy a popular gift card, i.e. iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon. Once you buy the card, the caller will demand the gift card number and PIN on the back of the card. Those numbers let them immediately get the money you loaded onto the card.

Requests for gift cards as payment for anything is a scam.

Help Emergency Responders Find YOU!

Emergency response teams cannot find your house if your house number is not clearly displayed. Believe

it or not, a majority of house numbers are not visible from the street, particularly at night. A badly displayed number can cost us precious time in an emergency.

• Use house numbers that are easily read from a distance of 50 feet.

• House numbers should stand out, even at night. Light and dark contrast works best and bigger is better.

• Mark your house and both sides of your mailbox.

• Clear vegetation from your house numbers.

A complete set of house numbers can be purchased for $20 on the 3rd Floor of the Sussex Civic Center.

The The DO’SDO’S and and DON’TSDON’TS of Burning of Burning in the Village of Sussex in the Village of Sussex

• DO place recreational fires 10 feet away from any structure, trees/shrubs/bushes, fence, etc.

• DO build your fire pit 10 inches below ground and a maximum 2 feet across.

• DO build your fire pit out of non-combustible materials.

• DO place your portable fire pit on a permanent non-combustible surface twice the size of the portable fire pit.

• DON’T burn garbage, grass, fields, brush, woods, or combustibles.

• DON’T open burn within 25 feet of a building or 10 feet from a lot line.

• DON’T have flames higher than 2 feet above your fire pit.

• DON’T burn when the wind direction or speed will cause smoke or embers to be carried toward any building or combustible material or cause a nuisance.

If You Suspect the Person on the Other End of the Line is a Scammer...

1. Don’t panic! Stay level-headed and think through the situation.

2. Don’t assume they are legitimate just because they have your personal information. Anyone can access this information.

3. Don’t give away ANY personal information.4. If it sounds too good to be true, it is! 5. Authorities will NEVER ask for gift cards.

Come Explore in KidsLabThis summer

will mark five years since the Pauline Haass Public Library’s maker space for school-aged children opened. This space, called KidsLab, is tucked in a room off of the children’s department that has seen a variety of uses over the years. You may have even walked by without knowing it was there!

During the first decade of the century, educational research on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills took the spotlight. This research acknowledged that literacy in these areas closely followed in importance that of traditional reading literacy. Libraries responded, and quiet spaces for tinkering and experimenting popped up in libraries across America.

During the summer of 2014, the children’s department did a test run, dubbing the space the Engineering Room; ramps, tubes, building supplies, and stacking materials were provided as activity challenges for the summer reading program. The enthusiastic response drove the decision to transform the room into a permanent maker lab, and one year later KidsLab was opened to kids in grades 3 and up.

The original KidsLab offered a marble run, LEGO wall, photo booth, cardboard creation station, board games, and light table activities. Since then it has grown from a small collection of homemade and repurposed activities to a rich collection of kits and equipment that includes circuitry, robots, a digital microscope, and coding software. The recent addition of an electric iron and a toaster oven make technologically-assisted art projects possible. Kids can even create their own stop-motion videos at an animation station.

KidsLab is also the setting for the Library’s participation in the annual statewide Wisconsin Science Festival. Highlighted activities during Festival weekend have ranged from slime-making to robot coding.

In 2016 the Festival’s deputy director, Wesley Marner, made a site visit to our KidsLab and was enthusiastic about what he saw, offering encouragement about the library’s vision. The same summer, members of the Hamilton High School Robotics team volunteered their talents to KidsLab users in an exciting program called Robotics at the Library (RATL). This highlighted the value of offering guidance and mentorship to kids using the lab, so by September 2018 LabTime, a twice-weekly time slot staffed by teen volunteers, was established.

Since opening, KidsLab has served over 3,500 children. And the Lab continues to grow: this year a grant from the Department of Public Instruction will provide two heavy duty sewing machines for our “SewXO” initiative, focused upon soft circuitry construction. Library staff members are committed to keeping the STEM offerings fresh and current, and have many ideas for the future.

Stop by and visit anytime we’re open; our children’s staff members are happy to show you around!
