How To Survive Shopping For New Running Shoes By Mike Miller

Running shoes today are pricey at best, downright expensive if you are not a careful & patient shopper. Considering the expense, time, and effort required to track down & purchase just the right pair of running shoes... considering the work, sweat, and pounding those shoes will take as you wear them ... 1 consider it vitally important to get shoes in the right size!

To start with, it is always a good idea to thumb through your well-worn Runner's World Shoe Review issue. Not that you will find any of these shoes in any of the stores you shop in, but just so you have an idea of what shoes you will be looking for. For example, don't buy racing flats if you weigh 175 pounds, wear orthotics, and plan to wear them on your 4 mile runs through the neighborhood.

The next step is to go to a store that will carry shoes that you can actually use. Not to speak poorly about any store in particular, I would not recommend getting your running shoes at a K-Mart or a Sears. Racquet & Jog & Fleet Feet are two stores that have a large selection & knowledgeable sales staff to help you. If you know what you are dOing (and you will after you read this article), you can get what you want & need at the myriad of other stores that carry running shoes (Sports Authority, Athlete's Foot, etc).

When you get to the store, look through the selection they carry, and decide which of the shoes you would like to try on. If you have a shoe that you are wearing now, that works foryou, that is still being made-you are one lucky individual! Usually, the shoe company will change the shoe that you feel is the best shoe they ever made, your favorite shoe in the whole wide world, just when you need to buy another pair. In fact, I know some runners that buy several pairs of shoes that they like for that very reason.

If you do not already have a favorite shoe, or a shoe that works well for you, try on several from v~rious manufacturers. Let your feet decide which ones feel best. If it feels good on your foot when you try it on, that is a good start to a potentially fabulous relationship! Put both shoes on if they feel good.

Run in the shoe in the store. Yes, run! I mean, you are buying running shoes, aren't you? So, you want to know how the shoe feels on your foot under the forces & pressures it will be under when you run in it. Try to notice if there are any tight spots. Try to notice if the foot moves around in the shoe, or if the heel slops up & down. If it feels good now, you have a winner!

Spring 1997 Intercenter Competition

Overall, Goddard placed first among NASA centers in the 2-mile as determined by a complicated formula which takes into account the number of employees in the center, the number of participants, the placement of top ten age group finishers, and the number of persons in each quartile time finish by age group.

10K Results: the following are the top finishers in terms of time in the 10K from their respective age groups. Again, please note that medalists are restricted to NASA civil servants, contractors and retirees.

Gold STEVEN TOMPKINS 41:25 JULIE DEUTSCHMANN 45:49 MARY FORTE 54:38

JEAN PLln 96:29

Silver TIMOSAHA 40:36 PETER S. P. HUI 48:15 MEGLARKO 51:18

Bronze THOMAS WINKERT 39:36 DAVE CASTRO 38:21 MELANIE GOKEY 98:08 HEIDI WOOD 56:49

In the 10K competition, Ames came in first ahead of second place GSFC.

(Running Shoes, Continued from p.3)

If the shoe does not feel good, then you may as well discard that shoe and even that manufacturer from further consideration. I have had good luck with Nike and Brooks, but absolutely cannot wear New Balance or Saucony. Others are just the oPPosite. Trust your feet, they will not steer you wrong.

There is one more thing that is very important when trying on shoes. That is to totally ignore the size marked on the side of the box. The size shoe you must buy is the size that gives you the width of one of your thumbs between the end of your toe and the end of the shoe. A generous thumb width. Shoes recently seem to have been marked small. A size 9 will fit like an 8. So, ignore the number and buy the proper fit. Your feet deserve the best fit you can give them! Running hurts enough on its own without torturing your feet, too.
