Forgive us.
Amen. (silence for our own prayers of confession)

Sermon Rev. David Johnson Rowe Last week David began our church’s three week journey into the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Copies of David’s sermon are available in the Narthex or on our website (greenfieldhillchurch.com, audio and text). In summary:
✓ Protestantism began as a REFORM movement entirely within Catholicism.
✓ 500 years ago, Luther, a Catholic priest in Germany, build upon ideas of reform that had been stirring for a century.
✓ Invention of the printing press spread reform ideas quickly. ✓ Political factions helped the “Protesters” seeking more
independence. ✓ The Protestant Reformation led to significant changes:
❖ Worship and the Bible in common language. ❖ Priority of the Bible in matters of faith. ❖ Elevation of the laity.
6
❖ Expansion of church music, hymns. ❖ Diversification of worship style, leading to
denominations. ✓ The Catholic Church responded with its own “counter
reformation” that helped reform Catholicism.
TODAY’S SERMON will focus on key Reformation issues: Transubstantiation: what is Holy Communion really? Justification By Faith: who is saved, and how? Priesthood of All Believers: the role of clergy and laity.
* Hymn Fairest Lord Jesus Hymnal, no.97
* Pastoral Benediction
Choral Benediction (10:30)
Postlude
* All who are able, please stand.

may be quietly contacted during the worship service if their child misses them! If
your child in worship becomes restless or unhappy, please make use of the Parlor
(through the double doors by the choir loft, or head outside and through the side
doors). There is a comfortable space there for your child to play with toys and a
speaker which carries the service!

UPCOMING EVENTS AT CHURCH
FUN FACT #5 ABOUT THE REFORMATION: Luther's
Hymn "A Mighty Fortress" has been called the "Battle Hymn
of the Reformation" for the effect it had in increasing the
support for the Reformers' cause. Luther wrote the words -- a
loose paraphrase of Psalm 46 -- and composed the
melody sometime between 1527 and 1529. The popular hymn was used as an anthem
during the Thirty Years' War and was later sung at the funeral for former President
Dwight D. Eisenhower and is often sung in Protestant churches at Reformation Day
services. Join us in the Sanctuary THIS Wednesday, October 25th @ 7:30 pm to
reflect on The Reformation and its impact on church and society with Glenn
Sunshine, PhD.

JOSEPHINE DREW REBOCHO
Introduction
Ken and Jaime’s prayer: Loving, leading God, bless our journey of faith with Victoria. May all that
we say, and all that we are, lead her towards a strong and sure faith in you.
Together as a family of love, may we delight in each other always. In
Christ's name we pray. Amen.
Michael and Martha’s prayer:
God, giver of all good gifts, we are grateful for the precious gift of
Josephine. Give to us the patience and wisdom to grow with her in faith. Together as a family of love, may we find joy in each other always. In
Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
Godparents’ Vows

In what you say and what you do, will you do all you can to live as an
example of kindness and compassion, of hope and faith? (We will)
Will you encourage your goddaughter to wonder, to ask the hard
questions, to rejoice in mystery, and to listen for God? (We will)

church! We promise to be your friends in faith, and to cherish you and
every child of this church. Amen.

“The Legacy of the
Protestant
RefoRmaTion” With
Glenn Sunshine PhD
Professor of History, Central
Connecticut State University
Date: Wednesday, October 25, 2017
Time: 7:30 – 9:00pm
in the Sanctuary
OPEN TO THE PUBLIC – FREE ADMISSION
The year 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant
Reformation. The Reformation had a much more far-reaching impact in
shaping society and culture than simply changing our understanding of the
Gospel. The Protestant Reformation has been interpreted in a variety of
ways by historians, sociologists, and other scholars over the years. While on
the surface it was a religious movement, some scholars argue that the
religious elements masked deeper, secular causes. Please join us in
reflections on the Reformation and its impact on church and society.
