This year’s future-themed event raised more than $650,000 to support cardiovascular enhancements at the Frances Langford Heart Center at Martin Health. Godebu joined the group just this past September, right after completing her internship and graduating from the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Though born and raised in California, Godebu confesses she has already developed a special fondness for Martin County. “San Diego is too chilly for me,” she says with a laugh. “And I really like the beautiful small-town feel of this area. I like that Martin is a non-profit hospital that does a lot of outreach in the community.” Before becoming a physician, Godebu — herself the daughter of a physician — was a laboratory researcher and a high school science teacher. She decided to go into medicine, specifically urology, because she relishes the opportunity to interact on a personal level with patients while also performing complex surgical and clinical procedures. She treats patients for varied conditions such as kidney stones, bladder cancer and urinary problems. She is in the process of pursuing her board certification. Dr. Antonio Beltran has been serving as a urologist on the Treasure Coast for approximately 20 years. He defines his profession as living his true calling to improve the health and well being of individuals who are sick. He is very passionate about patient care and improved outcome. “I chose urology because it’s the field where individuals who are acutely ill can be improved by medical or surgical treatment” he says. I also like the fact that we cross over into a lot of specialties. It’s an exciting field. As a second generation urologist he has seen improved urological research that leads to improved patient outcomes over the years. Among the advances in technology are tools such as Narrow Band Imaging (for improved targeting of biopsies and visualization of lesions in the bladder); and the UroLife implant (for preventing an enlarged prostate from blocking the urethra). “Technology and urology are rapidly changing,” Beltran says. “As a department, we embrace those changes as we provide exceptional care to every patient every time.” Dr. Adam Mues arrived at Martin Health System after beginning his career as an assistant professor of urology and oncology at New York University. Growing up in Nebraska, he says he was initially interested in neurosurgery, but went into urology instead because he enjoyed the challenges of the wide variety of surgical procedures and surgical approaches. “I like that people are generally healthier and happier after we treat them,” he says. Mues has been in practice at Martin for almost two years and appreciates the small size of the health system, saying it gives him the ability to get to know the leadership and his physician colleagues. A unique challenge he has encountered is the changing expectations that people have of the practice of medicine. “Technology is improving everything in every area. However, in medicine we have a more traditional approach in that we need to physically see a patient, make a diagnosis and recommend a treatment for them. Technology and instrumentation continue to improve the quality, but we must still provide a hands-on approach with each individual patient.” Is this the year you decide your legacy?

Frank Rodriguez, as a U.S. Navy veteran and retired electrician, is not a man who gives in easily to pain. But when he began to experience a discomfort in his lower back that was unlike anything he’d felt before, he knew he’d better get it checked out. “I had a mass on my right kidney,” he says with a slight shrug. “It was about ¾ of an inch. When I went to see Dr. Mues, he said it was most likely cancer.” Rodriguez’s wife, Mariana, isn’t quite as nonchalant about the diagnosis as Frank is, but she does agree that Martin Health urologist Dr. Adam Mues was reassuring and thorough in explaining the treatment process. “He’s very sweet and he takes the time to make sure we understand everything,” she says. The mass did indeed turn out to be cancerous, and Dr. Mues recommended using the technologically advanced da Vinci Si Robot Surgical System (see sidebar for more details). After the procedure, the physician gave them the good news that all the cancer had been successfully excised and Rodriguez was recovering even better than expected. His six-month follow-up visit revealed he is still cancer free. “The operation was mind-boggling to me,” Rodriguez marvels. “I was out of the hospital in two days and I had no bleeding, no nothing. I didn’t even have to use the pain pills. Dr. Mues is wonderful and we tell everyone now: if you need a urologist, go see him. I can’t say enough good things about him.”

your assets• Flexible for your family should your

financial circumstances change

Alternately, you may consider a gift that can provide you income for life. Such a gift is:• A Charitable Gift Annuity, which is easy

to arrange through a simple contract between you and Martin Health

• Beneficial and can provide an attractive rate of return, based on your age

• A great way to receive a charitable deduction in the year the gift is made

Your gift can make a huge difference. What matters is that the gift fits you, your family, your financial circumstances and philanthropic objectives. We are happy to help. Visit giftplanning.martinhealth.org/bequests or giftplanning.martinhealth.org/cga For more information, please call Jessica J. McLain, MHA, CFRE, Vice President and Chief Philanthropic Officer at 772-223-4921, or email [email protected].

is the perfect time to remember Martin Health in your philanthropic plans

At Martin Health, the future is now with the implementation of the da Vinci Si Robot Surgical System. Made possible through your generous philanthropic contributions, this technological marvel is the most advanced of its kind in Martin and St. Lucie counties. With the da Vinci robot, surgeons are able to perform intricately complicated yet minimally invasive procedures through a few small incisions as opposed to the traditional open surgeries. In a short video about robotic surgery, available on Martin Health’s website at www.martinhealth.org/urology, Dr. Adam Mues explains, “It benefits patients in their short-term outcomes in terms of ... cosmetics — the incisions are much smaller — [and] also in terms of their hospital stay.” Features include: • Magnified vision system

that gives surgeons a 3D HD view inside the patient’s body

• Ergonomically designed console where the surgeon sits while operationg

• Wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human hand
