Have you heard their unique, low pitched, rrrrrrrrrrrrcall, as they fly over- head? Sandhill cranes are returning to Wisconsin after spending the winter down south. Smart birds! Smart, not just because they prefer Texas over Wisconsin in the winter, but smart because they know how to navigate thousands of miles during their annual migration. Like their whooping crane cousins they were also an endangered species about a century ago. Theyve made quite a comeback. They seem to dot the landscape in every direction. Dull grey in color, their striking face features white cheeks with a splash of brilliant red above their eyes. They stand 3 to 4 feet tall having a wingspan of 6 to 7 feet. They live 20 to 30 years and are one of the largest birds in America. Cranes fly at altitudes up to 5000 feet and stay aloft for many hours without flapping their wings, riding air thermals to soar long distanc- es. How long? Migratory flights average 200 to 300 miles per day but with a tailwind cranes have flown 500 miles in a day. About a half million are currently gathered along the banks of the Platte River in Nebraska. They congregate there every year for about a month, gaining strength as they scavenge for grain left in the fields. After about a month they wing their way to northern states, Canada, and even as far as Russia. Sometime, somewhere, some bird is going to catch your attention in the coming months as Gods winged marvels return to our state in numbers. The bright plumage of a Baltimore ori- ole, the blurred wings of a hummingbird, the majestic strength of an eagle or hawk, the exotic color patterns of a wood duck or pheasant, the unique call of a loon, the sheer numbers of coot or mallards at Horicon Marsh, or even the common sight of a cardinal or robin in your back yard; birds are a testimony to Gods creative genius. As the old adage in advertising goes, often imitated, never duplicatedthats how it is with birds. No man made machine can ever match Gods elegant and gorgeous examples of living flight. Such marvelous variety, such awesome characteristics; the birds cause us to contemplate our loving Gods creative skill. Indeed, all things have been CREATED BY HIM AND FOR HIM. Birds, no less than the rest of His fabulous creation testify that no one has the engineering skill, the artistic imagina- tion, or the life giving power of our creating God. Thank you God for birds! Then God said, Let the waters teem with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of the heavens. And God created the great sea monsters, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. Was it ever good!!!! On the fourth day of crea- tion God made the birds whose delightful progeny we will again enjoy during the warm days of summer. As an added bonus God uses the most common bird of all to impress upon us His loving care. Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore do not fear; you are of more value than the sparrows.Mt. 10:28-30 What a comfort! If God pays close attention to every sparrow, how much more He watches over you! ALL THINGS HAVE BEEN CREATED BY HIM AND FOR HIM. Birds, no less than the rest of His awesome creation give Him glory. Praise God for birds! P.S. ALL THINGS WERE CREATED BY HIM AND FOR HIM

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions, or rulers or authorities – and all things have been created by Him and for Him.” Col. 1:16 They’re back! Have you heard their unique, low pitched, rrrrrrrrrrrr… call, as they fly over-head? Sandhill cranes are returning to Wisconsin after spending the winter down south. Smart birds! Smart, not just because they prefer Texas over Wisconsin in the winter, but smart because they know how to navigate thousands of miles during their annual migration. Like their whooping crane cousins they were also an endangered species about a century ago. They’ve made quite a comeback. Cranes fly at altitudes up to 5000 feet and stay aloft for many hours without flapping their wings, riding air thermals to soar long distanc-es. God’s winged marvels return to our state in numbers. The bright plumage of a Baltimore ori-

ole, the blurred wings of a hummingbird, the majestic strength of an eagle or hawk, the exotic

color patterns of a wood duck or pheasant, the unique call of a loon, the sheer numbers of

coot or mallards at Horicon Marsh, or even the common sight of a cardinal or robin in your

back yard; birds are a testimony to God’s creative genius. As the old adage in advertising

goes, “often imitated, never duplicated” that’s how it is with birds. No man made machine can

ever match God’s elegant and gorgeous examples of living flight. Such marvelous variety,

such awesome characteristics; the birds cause us to contemplate our loving God’s creative

skill. Indeed, all things have been CREATED BY HIM AND FOR HIM. Birds, no less than the

open expanse of the heavens. And God created the great sea monsters, and every living

creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird

after its kind; and God saw that it was good.” Was it ever good!!!! On the fourth day of crea-

tion God made the birds whose delightful progeny we will again enjoy during the warm days

of summer. As an added bonus God uses the most common bird of all to impress upon us

His loving care. “Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the
