Picture this. You walk into a dentist with gaps inyour teeth or you’re wearing dentures. And youleave with new teeth the same day. No need to weardentures anymore. Sounds unbelievable, but it’strue.
That’s because there is a newer dental toothimplant procedure available. And this procedure isup to 50% less expensive than older tooth implantprocedures. What’s more, there’s NO gum flap sur-gery, NO extensive bone drilling and NO stitchesafterwards.
Minimal disturbance to your mouth
This newer procedure uses keyhole surgery. Soyour mouth is quicker to heal after any procedure. And the good news is this new type of tooth im-planting is accessible to patients who haven’t beenable to get tooth implants before - because of eithercost, difficulty or any lack of bone height or width. And it’s ideal for patients who are nervous whenvisiting a dentist as this process involves fewer den-tal visits.
So, what exactly is involved? Well, an initialtiny keyhole is made where the tooth implant is togo .The correct size implant is placed which willeventually be used to anchor to take the permanenttooth. Your implant then has a temporary crownattached to it. This new tooth is then left for 8 – 12weeks to allow the bone to fuse the new implant.Next, an imprint for a new crown is taken. Once thenew crown is ready, you return to have your newcrown fitted.
In fact, you can even have a new tooth implantthe same day as you have any teeth removed. And ifyou have 3 or even 4 teeth missing, then these canbe replaced with only 2 implants.
But do you get any soreness from toothimplanting?
This may occur in the first 24 – 48 hours. Butit’s easily overcome by taking Paracetamol or simi-lar.
But are all tooth implants successful? Theanswer is no. However, I do have a 95% success ratewhen I perform a tooth implant. That’s 9 out ofevery 10 people who don’t have to wear denturesanymore. And if your implant doesn’t ‘take’ I re-doit for FREE. And, if the new implant still doesn’t‘take’, then I refund you your money. So you’reNOT risking a single penny.
Imagine being able to eat an apple... nuts... orchew a steak. Imagine feeling confident when talk-ing to others. Imagine roaring with laughter becauseyou’re proud of your smile.
Do You Qualify?
As not everyone is suitable for tooth implants,I’m offering a FREE 15 minute consultation for 10readers of The Grapevine Mag who respond before20th March. I check for gum disease, tooth disease, assess which type of tooth implant will be bestsuited for you and to see if your mouth is suitablefor tooth implants. During your consultation youwill NOT be sold to. So phone 01484 714640 (24hours) or email [email protected] andreserve your free consultation today by quotingCODE: TGM1.

Forget gym membership...get gardening instead.Going out to sort the garden, especially after thespoils of winter destruction, is a surprising calorieburner.
How many calories do you use when you garden? For the calorie-obsessed among us, it is fascinating toflick through a table of all the different gardeningactivities. Some of the meatier tasks, such as shovel-ling or mowing the lawn for an hour with a handmower, will burn around 400 calories. If you jog forfour miles you will burn about the same amount.
The point is that while it is an effort to drag yourselfto the gym for three sessions a week, nipping into thegarden is far more appealing. Even on days when youjust pick a few beans, water some plants or open thegreenhouse door, you will be putting your bodythrough a useful range of movements involvingresistance and stretching exercises, even if you don'trealise that you are doing so.
Clyde Williams, professor of sports science atLoughborough University, estimates that an hour ofheavy work in a gym, perhaps running on a treadmillfor 20 minutes, riding an exercise bike and doingseveral sets of weights would expend around 600-700 calories. If on the other hand you spent threehours in the garden, doing a range of jobs such asraking, digging, chopping logs and weeding, youwould easily use the same amount, if not more.
The benefit in terms of weight loss is that gardeninginvolves prolonged energy expenditure (as opposedto a shorter burst of intense aerobic activity) so youwill tend to burn more fat as opposed to carbohy-drates, which is more effective when trying to loseweight.
What great exercise can you do in the gardennow? At this more dormant time I like to indulge myselfand do regular garden "workouts" so I am fighting fitfor when the rush comes in spring. Too many garden-ers tend to hibernate now, and then are surprisedwhen they strain themselves in a spring panic. Ac-tivities such as turning out the compost heap, bar-rowing compost, chopping logs, planting trees andspreading thick piles of mulch around will get your
heart beating. If possible, tryand warm upbefore launch-ing into aheavy garden-ing sessionand even goto the troubleof stretchingout afterwards, particularly after long periods instrenuous gardening ‘positions.’
Any short cuts to make gardening easier?Certain time-saving machines need to be thoughtabout carefully before purchase. For example, if youhave less than half an acre of grass, a ride-on mowerwill not save you any time compared to a walk-behind mower. You will only be using 140 caloriesan hour compared to just under double that amount. The machine will cost you a lot more initially andservicing and fuel costs are significantly higher too.
Some devices that save you bending are not alwaysbeneficial either. One of the great things about gar-dening is that it makes you move your body througha range of positions, kneeling, squatting, stretchingand so forth, which keeps your joints mobile.
How much gardening should I aim to do to keepfit? The American Surgeon General's report says 30 min-utes of aerobic activity is required each week. ButProf Clyde Williams says this is pitched too low. Herecommends buying a step counter and aiming at10,000 steps a day. It is highly motivational; put it onand spend time gardening and compare the resultswith a non-gardening day, and you will feel verysmug.
Does the great outdoors make you happy? For many years research has shown that exercisehelps to relieve depression. In addition, gardeningcan become an addictive pursuit, making you want togo outside and exercise more. In addition you canproduce fantastic, healthy food while keeping yourbody fit with all sorts of planting and propagatingmovements and motions. No wonder gardeners livelonger. Plus, when the sun does start shining - you’llalso be absorbing vital Vitamin D.
Gardening. . . your secret workout weapon

With energy prices at an all time high and withno immediate chance of that changing - it’sworth considering all avenues as far as energyconservation goes.
Ecotherm, who cover both the Halifax andBradford area, have been supplying renewableenergy solutions for the last 8 years. The com-pany is run by brothers Ashley and DuncanStubley who have a combined experience of 25years in the plumbing and heating industry.
‘Over the last 3 years we have rebranded asEcotherm Heating Solutions and branched outinto the renewable market, with promisingresults,’ Ashley told us, ’Our energy solutionsrange from underfloor heating to groundsource heat pumps and all our services are of-fered on a design to completion basis. Thisensure we supply every customer with thebest renewable energy solution.’
The installation options include;
Photovoltaic Panels (generate electricity fromthe sun) you will get some form of feed in tar-iff which generates income.
Heat Pumps use latent heat from ground orair and transfers it to hot water or heatingreducing energy costs.
Solar Thermal uses panels toheat domestic hot water and canreduce the heating of water by upto 80% in the summer.
Combined Heat & Power Units - similar tocombination boilers, but they generate electric-ity, which you get paid for.
Underfloor Heating because of the lower tem-peratures used, this again will reduce your en-ergy costs.
High Efficiency Boilers, compared to a stan-dard boiler, these can reduce your gas bill byup to 20%.
‘The priority ofEcotherm is tosave customersmoney and helpreduce theirenergy bills ona long term ba-sis,’ said Dun-can, ‘With the ever increasing price of fueleveryone should look into options to reducethe cost and alternative energy sources. Fromsaving water, generating electric, heating wateror heating the home, Ecotherm Heating Solu-tions give the customer the complete package.’
If you would like to find out more about howEcotherm could make your home or businessmore energy efficient - call Duncan or Ashleyon the numbers opposite.

Q & A’s . . . with Debbie Story (Debbie’s monthly twitter forGrapevine readers). You can follow Debbie on Twitter @speaktodebbie
Q: I’m selling a house that I have rentedout since I bought it. I know that a basicrate tax payer pays 18% on a capital gainand a higher rate tax payer 28%. I earn£30k a year and expect to make a gain ofc. £50k. As a basic rate tax payer do Isimply pay 18% on the gain?
A: An individual is entitled to an annualexemption of £10.1k, so capital gains tax(CGT) will be paid on the remaining £40k.You will pay a combination of the two rates,18% on the amount of the gain which takesyou up to the higher rate banding and then28% on the balance. In your example, if yourpersonal allowance is £7.5k and with a basicrate banding of £35k (total £42.5k), £12.5k ofthe basic rate banding is unused by your earn-ings (£42.5k-£30). So £12.5k is taxed at 18%and the balance of £27.5k (£40-£12.5k) istaxed at 28%. The total CGT in this exampleis £10k.
Q: My employer is using the wrong taxcode on my payslip. What do I do?A: If you think your tax code is wrong youneed to tell HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)as soon as possible to make sure you pay theright amount of tax. If it is wrong you may bedue a tax refund, or need to pay more tax. CallHMRC on 0845 300 0627. Have yourNational Insurance number with you when youphone.
Q: Are there any tax savings in gettingmarried? I have been living with mypartner for over 12 years, does that makeany difference?A: Yes there are potential savings, as longterm relationships are recognised when itcomes to tax! Assets (e.g. rental property,
shares) can be transferredbetween husband & wife and civilpartners without generating a taxcharge. Transferring these incomeproducing assets may reduce oreliminate a higher rate income tax charge. Also, before they are sold you can transfer theassets between you to ensure both of yourannual capital gains tax exemptions (currently£10,100) are used.
On death, unless you are married or register acivil partnership, your surviving partner willhave to pay inheritance tax on anythinginherited from you that exceeds the nil rateband, currently £325,000. A spouse or civilpartner can now inherit your nil rate bandwhen you die, potentially saving tax.
Debbie also runs ‘Brighouse Link’ andLadies4Networking Brighouse groups. Thegroups meet monthly at Prego restaurant. The purpose of these groups is to assist youin developing links with local businessesand realizing potential opportunities onyour doorstep. There are no joining fees.

Fantastic, you’ve decided to adopt one of our rescuedanimals and give them a sec-ond chance in life. What now? This page guides you throughour rehoming process, like aloyal guide dog helping some-one to their destination.
Things to considerThere is a small charge foradopting an animal from us. This helps us cover thecosts of microchipping, vaccination and, where ap-propriate, neutering. Owning a pet is a big responsi-bility. Be sure that you can meet their needs andprovide for them financially. We recommend insur-ing your pet to help cover the cost of any future un-expected medical costs.
Choosing an animalThere are several ways to view the animals in ourcare who are looking for new homes.
Online• Use pet search to search for dogs, cats, rabbits, horses and more. Search by location, breed, age, sizeand gender to help you find your perfect match.• Our special appeals highlight the animals that arefinding it more difficult to find a new home. Theseanimals are often overlooked through no fault of theirown, but will make wonderful pets for the right own-ers.
In personNot all of the animals looking for new homes can beseen on our website.•Find the centre in your area and contact them toarrange a visit, they’re looking forward to meetingyou!
Visiting an animal centreWhen you visit one of our centres a friendly memberof staff will greet you. They will ask about the typeof animal you would like to adopt, and the kind ofhome you can offer. You will also be asked to fill outan application form so you can be matched with yourperfect pet. Get a head start - application forms canbe found on the right. Some of our centres don’tallow members of the public to look around the ani-mals and instead provide photos and descriptions ofthose available for rehoming. This helps us to mini-mise the anxiety of animals in our care and keep tails
wagging.
Don't be put off if we don't find yourperfect match during the first visit. We're like a dog with a bone when itcomes to rehoming animals. Keepcoming back and we'll happily keeptrying to find the right pet for you.
Getting to know each otherOnce you’ve chosen a pet you will be introduced bya member of staff or volunteer and given some timeto get to know each other. If you have other familypets to consider you may be encouraged to bringthem to the centre on a separate visit so that they canmeet too!
The home visitSo that we can be sure we’ve truly found you yourperfect match one of our trained volunteers will visityou in your home. Mrs O’Malley, who’s rehomed acat and dog from us, said: ‘The home visits are nicereally; you get somebody who comes round and has achat with you about animals. They’re very friendly.’
Taking an animal homeCongratulations, it’s time to collect your newest fam-ily member! Your new pet may be a little nervous atfirst, and may have spent some time away from fam-ily life, so be sure to give them plenty of time tosettle in. Expect a few accidents during the first fewdays, even from already house trained pets.
If you’re concerned that your pet isn’t settling in, orthey develop unwanted behaviours in the future, consider seeking the advice of a clinical animal be-haviourist. A few simple changes could make a bigdifference.
Happy endingsWe take great care to ensure that each pet is per-fectly matched to the right owner. By adopting ananimal from us you're helping abandoned, abused orneglected animals become part of a heart-warmingrehoming success story.
Visit our pet search today to find yourperfect pet. For more information - go to;www.rspca-halifaxandhuddersfield.org.uk

Director: Brad BirdThe Mission: Impossible franchise has alwaysbeen the bastard child of the spy genre. With itsonly connection to the original television seriesthat iconic theme tune, the series has alwaysstruggled to establish a coherent identity. It hasneither the prestige of Bond, nor the intrigue ofBourne, existing in a liminal state between lightespionage and hard edged thriller, yet this is thethird sequel. Built around just one face, an actorwho used to be the most bankable in the world,Mission: Impossible makes money, and givesposter designers the rare chance to include co-lons in abundance.
Ghost Protocol is nearly a solid film. Brad Birdbrings a linear but effective feel with his un-flashy direction. The middle act, heist in (andoutside of) the Burj Khalifi in Dubai is by farthe strongest section of the movie. The stealitself may be a little clichéd in this alreadybloated genre, but there is crystal simplicity tothe way it is presented, resulting in a tensionthat the rest of the film could have used.
And herein dothlay the problemwith Ghost: Proto-col. It is, like somany action mov-ies today, built around a single set-piece. Theplot itself is so generic it may as well have beenthe in-joke ‘maguffin’ the last entry used. How-ever, the set-up does briefly tease those whocare about things like character. Ethan Hunt, allround superspy and action hero, has beenditched by his wife. One of the most ordinarythings happening to an extraordinary hero wasfascinating, leaving a multitude of questionsabout his mental stability. But don’t worry, allthis is disregarded later in the film as ‘spystuff.’ You may have read plenty of ‘positive’reviews about this film, and yes, it isn’t horri-ble. It just isn’t unique or interesting enough tohate. It’s just…pffft.

T
The second annual exhibition of theElland Floral and Horticultural Societytook place in grounds adjoiningWhitwell Place in August 1869.
We can assume that the first exhibition washeld in 1868 but, unfortunately, we have nofurther details at this stage. It must have beensuccessful to proceed with further exhibitionsand the 1869 show was a success, indeed atremendous success. Over 7,000 people viewedthe displays of plants, fruits, flowers andvegetables. Admittedly the weather was veryfine and there was the added attraction of a brassband contest. The judges were kept busy until3pm such was the volume of entries. Theprincipal local winners (entrants ventured as faras Wakefield) were Mr. W. Plues, Hullen Edge(Plants/Veg & Flowers), Mr. C. Broadbent, WestVale (Plants), Mr. C. Tate, Mr, R. Sunderland &Mr. J. Brearley (all Elland veg growers).
Ten bands, including Elland Upper Edge, took part in the contest. Mr. C. F. H. Froehnert, band master of the 2nd Life Guards, was themusical judge. The first prize (£25 – at least£2.000 today) was awarded to the Dewsbury OldBand. Black Dyke Mills were placed 5th. At theclose of the competition all the bands united inplaying the National Anthem.
The 1872 contest was regrettably not held in
the same spirit on account of the bitterness otherbands, especially Nelson, felt towards MelthamMills. The Mills had the temerity to win everycontest they entered, even the previous week’strombone event. The correspondent noted thelack of goodwill and a keen competition!
Back to 1869 and the Greetland, West Valeand District Agricultural Association were not tobe outdone by Elland. They held their annualexhibition in the grounds of Mr. T. W.Townsend of Brow Bridge. The weather wasfine and therefore attendance very good. TheStainland and West Vale brass bands entertainedthe crowd. Entries were more localised and MrPlues of Hullen Edge scooped 2nd prize for hisplants. The correspondent states that plants inbloom were excellent, foliage plants very fine, cut blooms very numerous and good, fruit poorbut vegetables excellent. The winners’ names areinvariably local – Lumb, Nutton, Mallinson,Garside, Dyson, Ingham, Morton and Mellor.
The Greetland Show also judged animalcategories. Mr. Townsend, the benefactor, wonbest roadster (horse). Mr. J. Sykes of Stainlandwon 1st prize for best dairy cow, Mr. Townsendtaking 2nd prize. Mr. John Maude, West Vale, won best heifer under two years whereas Mr.John Walker, Stainland, took the cup for the bestWye calf under 12 months. The pig and poultryprizes are too numerous to mention but read as acatalogue of local names.
Finally there was a velocipede race whichwas easily won by a Master Hinchcliffe ofHalifax.
A selection of articles relating to otherFlower Shows will be placed in the HistoryRoom at Elland Library (open Tuesday andThursday 2pm to 4pm plus special openingSaturday 3rd March 10am to 12 noon).

Hurricane GoldBy Charlie HigsonFor Christmas I got a few things, one of whichwas a national book token. The book on whichI spent this token was Hurricane Gold. It wasworth it. Hurricane Gold is the fourth book inthe young Bond series but, if you haven’t readthe first three, that’s fine because, althougheach story leads onto the next, Hurricane Golddoesn’t give away the plot of the other ones.
The story starts on a boat in Mexico. James hascome with his Aunt on holiday after his lastadventure. Charmian (his Aunt) decides toleave him with her friend, Jack Stone, whilstshe goes exploring in the Mexican jungle. Jackleaves James with his children, Precious and JJ,while he flies Charmian into the jungle. Pre-cious is spoilt rotten, as is JJ, and James in-stantly dislikes both of them. However, when agang of thieves turn up and a hurricane strikes,James is forced to ally with them.
The characters are all real-istic and all of them have asecond side to them. Thevillains are not completelybad and the heroes – well, there don’t seem to be anyother than James in thebeginning, but peoplechange.
The story would appeal to boys or girls (mydad wouldn’t let me read it until he had!) abovethe age of eight or nine as it does contain mildviolence and some slightly graphic scenes. It’ssimilar to books like Alex Rider and ArtemiusFowl but it is set in the 1930s so it has a bit of aretro edge. Obviously, it was written for chil-dren but it is still a James Bond book!
The book is well-written and combines humourand plot in a story that you won’t want to miss.I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

GOOD AS NEWWITH COFFEEDOWN THE ROADIN HIPPERHOLME
Every Wednesday and Friday morning ChristChurch (at the Hipperholme crossroads) servecoffee and run a Good as New sale in theirannexe at the back of their car park. One roomis full of clothes, bric-a-brac and jewellery, theother crammed with books, cds, toys andjigsaws – all at bargain prices.
All the goods have been donated , usually onMonday mornings when ten or so volunteerssort and price that week’s goods. If things arenot sold in six or so weeks then everything issent to the British Heart Foundation shop or toSt George’s Crypt if it can be of use there –this keeps the stock in Christ Church’s saleforever changing as well as raising money(over £1,000 up to now) for a local charity. If customers buy something then they don’thave to pay for their coffee (some still do) andthe conversation that ensues also comes free!
The church regards thewhole operation as as e r v i c e t o t h ecommunity, fulfilling aregular need for a lot ofpeople. It does actuallyraise money as well topay for the premisesand heating though theproceeds are tithed: one tenth goes to localcharities mainly chosen by the sale helpers.
On Fridays the sale is partly manned by SocialServices clients with learning difficulties andthey look forward to coming to help and playtheir part, even though they are now based inRastrick. Some of those who attend the FridayLuncheon club at Christ Church are regularcustomers then but Wednesday is the busierday. There is still room for more to donate, buy or help – call in on a Monday morning formore details!
