Location information will be sent in an email blast. To sign-up for the E-blast, email [email protected] with the subject of “Please Add MeTo the Blast”. DECEMBER 12TH 11-1PM. The Sonoma Annual Santa Event will be held Saturday at the Barefoot pool. Santa and his elves will be having their picture taken with the kids. DECEMBER 19TH Christmas light Judging is tonight. DECEMBER 21-JANUARY 1 NO SCHOOL DECEMBER 25TH Merry Christmas JANUARY 10TH Christmas lights should be taken down. The HOA will begin sending out violation letters. JANUARY 18TH No School This month’sYard of the month winner will be chosen based on its Christmas light display. The winner will be chosen the night of December 19th. Be sure to turn on your lights!     ComingfromtheAnglo-Saxonword ‘spearwa’andliterallymeaning ‘flutterer’, sparrowsoftenconjureupimagesoftheubiquitousandnon-nativeHousesparrowandtheHousefinch,whichisn’tasparrowatall.Whilemostsparrowsaregenerallysmalltomediumbrownbirdswithstreaks,thedifferencesbetweensparrowscanbestbedeterminedbytheirrelativesize,headmarkings,andhabitat.

    All sparrowshaveconicalbills that theyuse to shell seeds,aprimarycomponentof theirdietyear-round,butespeciallysointhewintermonths.Thereislittledifferencebetweenthemalesandthefemalesintermsofappearance,butmalesareonaveragelargerthanfemales.Asagroup,mostsparrowsarebirdsofgrasslands,prairies,andmarshes,andseemtopreferweedyfieldsandwoodlandedgesinthewinter.Ofthesparrowspeciesthatmigrate,nonetravelfurtherthanthesouthernUnitedStatesornorthernMexico.

    OneofourmostcommonwintersparrowsistheChippingsparrow.Smallandslim,withalongnotchedtail,rustycap,whitestripeovertheeyeandablacklinethroughtheeye,thissparrowmovesinlooseflocksandfrequentlyfeedsinshortgrassandopenwoods.Whilestillfairlyabundant,thissparrowisdeclininginnumbers,mainlyduetohabitatdestruction,andwintersinthesouthernpartoftheUnitedStates.Whenfirstidentifiedin1810byanAmericanornithologist,itwasnicknamed‘thesocialsparrow’foritwaseasilyapproachedandassociatedwithhumanhabitation.

    Afairlylargesparrow,theWhite-crownedsparrowisdistinguishedbyitsblackandwhitestripedhead,unmarkedgraybreast,anddarkpinkbill.Itisfoundinlargegroupsinthicketsandweedyareas,foragingontheground.Discoveredin1772byaGermannaturalist,thissparrowwasoriginallynamedthe‘white-eyebrowedbunting’,forintheOldWorld,sparrowswereusuallycalledbuntings.

    Foundinavarietyofgrassyhabitats,andofteninsmallflocks,istheSavannahsparrow.Streakedonboththeirbackandtheirbreast,Savannah’shavepinklegs,yellowabovetheeye,athinwhitemediancrownstripe,andashortnotchedtail.FirstdescribedbyaBritishornithologistin1790,itwascalleda‘sandwichbunting’duetothefirstspecimensbeingcollectedfromSandwichBayintheAleutianIslandsofAlaska.

    Lincoln’ssparrowisamedium-sizedbirdwitharathershorttail,broadgraystripeabovetheeye,buffymoustachestripe,andabuffyupperbreastwithcrisp,blackishstreaks.Foundinwinterinbrushyedgesofpondsandothermoistareas,thissparrowwasnamedbyJohnJamesAudubonin1833afterhisresearchcompanion,ThomasLincoln,shotthefirstspecimeninLabrador.

    Sparrowsaregregariousandareoftenourmosthardywintervisitors.Adornedinvariousshadesofbrown,gray,black,andwhite,theyreflectthesubduedhuesofawinterlandscape.Oftendismissedas‘littlebrownbirds’whenseenwiththenakedeye,thesebirdsinvitecloserinspectionandarenature’swayofremindingusthatsubtlecolorsandpatternscanbebeautiful,too!
