Spring bulbs emerging include the ethereally beautiful dwarf Iris “Katharine Hodgkin” (pictured opposite). In case you forgot to buy and plant bulbs in the autumn we have many available in pots for you to enjoy now and then plant in your own garden to naturalise - buttercup yellow Eranthris hyemalis, deep blue-purple dwarf Iris reticulata, starry white Allium ursinum and yellow Erithronium “Pagoda”.

Garden supports are inevitable and essential for tall plants to avoid wind damage and premature destruction in the garden. Using semi-permanent structures such as hazel, willow and metal plant supports will help protect plants from damage and will save time later instead of endless staking with canes. We are building dahlia cages to support some of our dahlias which can grow to over 6ft. In May we are running two one day willow workshops so you can create your own plant supports to take home.

Planting plans are great to put together now when you can literally see the bare bones of your garden. Evergreen planting to add structure and definition and to act as a foil to winter and spring flowering hellebores and bulbs. Deciduous trees to provide dappled shade in summer, autumn colour, winter bark interest and sunlight for spring flowering plants.

Book List – Latin for Gardeners, RHS – a fascinating reference book to explain the

meanings behind plant names, with pronunciations for the pedantic amongst you. Simple to use, beautifully illustrated, you’ll find that you won’t be able to put it down.

Third Wednesday of every month

Looking Good in the Walled Garden – a walk around the Walled Garden to see and discuss what is looking good and what we are doing next, followed by tea and cake. Walks at 2pm and 3pm – no need to book.

The above event, held in St. Michael’s Church, Llanfihangel-Talyllyn during the last weekend in November proved a great success. Churches, organisations and individuals around the lake were asked to use their imagination, and any material, to make earthly or heavenly angels. All responded magnificently and a total of 34 angels were on display, a dozen of which were life-size. The diversity of ideas and artistry showed the outstanding talent of those living in our area and gave enormous pleasure to those who visited.People were asked to vote for their favourite angel and, although several voters noted “all are good” the overwhelming winner was the “Gardening angel” made by the Griffiths-Powell family. This and a few other angels are shown below.

Such fund raising events are critical in keeping our historic Churches open in the area. The Church committee is most grateful to all who supported the festival, both participants and visitors, helping us to raise just over £800. In particular, we would like to mention the Black Cock Inn, which served refreshments both days on behalf of Church funds and who do so much to support our village. Winners of the raffle prizes were Mr Derek Wilmott (Llangors), Mr Mike Mellors (Llandefalle) and Mrs Megan Griffiths (Llanfihangel-Talyllyn.)

The inaugural Big Swim and Triathlon was a tremendous success last year and we’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to the Blackham family, lake businesses and all of the communities around the lake. More than 200 people from across the country travelled to Llangorse during the weekend and I’m delighted to say that many of them have already been back for a return visit.

The Big Swim and Triathlon will be back in 2015 and, once, again we will be helping to raise money for Llangorse Sailing Club. The swim will take place on the afternoon of Saturday September 26th and the triathlon will be held in the morning and early afternoon of Sunday September 27th. Both races will start at the brand new clubhouse which will be officially opened on Saturday March 9th.

We’re keen to involve as many local people as possible so please get in touch if you’d like to raise some money for your club or society and are able to provide some marshals for Sunday September 27th. No training is needed and all marshals will be briefed and receive a t-shirt, food and drink plus a safety vest. Last year it was great to see lots of local people helping out; the competitors commented on how helpful and friendly everybody was. We’d also like to see local people taking part in either the swim, triathlon or relay triathlon events. There’s more information about all of the races on our website - www.llangorsetri.com If you’re thinking of entering please get in touch first as we’re able to offer a discounted rate for people living around the lake.

There are always many items on Llangors Community Council’s agenda with some issues sadly taking longer to achieve a solution than we would wish. We felt it was time for an update on current matters:

Highway issues: There are still many highway problems in the Community with speeding and parking being one of the Community Council priorities. We have been working closely with both Powys County Council and Dyfed Powys Police to try and find solutions to the problem. We ultimately hope for traffic calming measures both within Llangors and Llanfihangel Talyllyn, however with the budget constraints Powys currently has, we can only continue to highlight our proposals to achieve funding. We also need to encourage local residents to park sensibly and legally with thought for pedestrians and other road users. Again due to Powys budget cuts we are finding it difficult to ensure that drains and gullies are kept clear within our Community. We ask that residents keep an eye on drains near their property and, if safe to do so, clear small debris where appropriate. Please contact your Councillor or Clerk by email if you have any gully or drainage concerns.

Public Conveniences: The public conveniences at Llangors Lake Common will close at the end of March. After much consultation and deliberation the Community Council felt unable to take ownership of the toilets for many reasons. Mainly the condition of the building and the extra cost to the residents of the Community, which would be reflected in your Council Tax. However the Community Council has been actively encouraging local businesses to apply for the financial aid that is available in return for opening their toilet facilities to the public.

Litter & Dog Fouling: Throughout the Llangors Community there are issues with litter and dog fouling. We need to encourage both visitors and residents to respect the countryside and that includes appropriate disposal of both

Llangors Community Council - updatelitter and any dog business! A big thank you goes to those residents who regularly voluntarily litter pick – however they should not need too!

Community Councillor vacancy “Your Community needs you”: There is currently a vacancy for a Community Councillor for the Llanfihangel Talyllyn ward (Llanfihangel Talyllyn, Talyllyn, Llanywern, Pennorth and Llangasty) We would welcome anyone who is interested in becoming more involved within their Community to have a chat with any current councillors for more information or contact our Community Council clerk.

Affordable Housing: The Community Council actively tries to promote “affordable housing” for individuals, couples and families within our Community who find both open market house prices and rental accommodation is outside their budgets. We would like to hear from community residents who require affordable housing so that we know the scale of demand and are able to contact Housing Associations as Registered Social Landlords who provide Affordable Housing. We also would like to hear from residents who support our aims. Please email [email protected] or speak with your local Councillor.

Glebe Community Field: The Community Council would like to thank Llanfihangel Ladies for their donation from local fundraising and the grant from the Ashley Family Foundation. The new equipment is now in place. Thanks also to Mr & Mrs G Morris for their donation for the Glebe as a result of planning gain from the Dol Pistyll development.

If you do have any issues or ideas regarding your Community please contact your local Councillor or via email:[email protected]

We had a beautiful sunny morning for our festive Allt Walk and a good number of walkers turned up. Afterwards we enjoyed a warming glass of mulled wine accompanied by a roaring log fire.

The winter draw of the 100 club took place and the winners were;1st Peter Sweet, 2nd Marlie Randall, 3rd Roger Raikes.

A big thanks to all our 100 club members for supporting the hall, and also to Llangasty WI and Sheena, (Pilates),who regularly use the hall, and all those who have booked the hall for private and family events throughout the year.

In February we held our AGM which was followed by Anns not so easy quiz. There was some dispute over some of the answers but as we all know, the quizmaster is always right!

We will be holding a Table Top Sale and Coffee Morning, Sat.11th April 10.30-12.30 with some of the proceeds going to Mountain Rescue. Anyone wishing to book a table or join the 100 club please contact Ann Reese for details on 658726

Llanfihangel Talyllyn Playing Field:During last Spring the Llanfihangel Ladies Group looked into the possibility of obtaining a grant to increase the equipment in the Village playing field. We are very pleased to say that our application to the Ashley Family Foundation, managed by the Community Foundation in Wales, was successful and we were awarded a grant of £5,000 towards equipment for the playing field. We had already raised £1,250 which had been passed to Llangors Community Council for them to purchase a Cradle Swing. In August we met with representatives of our local Community Council to agree the purchase of further equipment. This new equipment which consists of a double swing for pre-school children, a double swing for older children, a springie horse, a wobble board, a free standing tunnel and a picnic table with seating, has now been installed. We hope that the community will enjoy these extra facilities.

Easter Sunday – Easter Egg Hunt - Llanfihangel Talyllyn:On Easter Sunday, 5th April 2015, there will be a children’s Easter Egg Hunt which will take place around the village. This will start at 3.00 p.m. from outside the Black Cock Inn. All welcome.

An update from PCSO Jason Hawkins, Brecon Neighbourhood Policing Team.

Brecon NPT would like to give a polite reminder to ensure that all dogs are kept on leads whilst crossing land containing livestock. As we are all aware you have the right to use rights of ways across farmers’ fields, but please be considerate and follow the law in ensuring that your dog is kept under control. We have had a few complaints within the village, from different callers about dog owners allowing their dogs to run free on farmers land causing distress to sheep and other livestock. Farmers may wish to use lethal force if a dog worries their flock, and we would like to prevent this.

Llangorse Parking IssuesBrecon NPT are continuing to monitor the parking issue around the school at Llangorse. So far results have been positive but we will continue to enforce the no parking restrictions on junctions etc. Please feel free to email me for feedback:[email protected]

Many, many years ago my son asked if he could go and play badminton in the village hall. He’d seen somewhere that players met late one night and played. We went to the hall and met a small group who played singles and doubles matches and after some coaching we were able to return the shuttle to the other side of the net. We played for many years until exams and university meant leaving home and work commitments made finding time too difficult. Then three youngsters from the primary school asked if they could play and they became the start of the club as it is today.

Let me make it clear from the start ... we don’t mind if youngsters want to come and try it. We don’t mind if they only play for a short time then move on to other activities. We / I will only make a minimum charge for the night they come ... we do not have a termly subscription and cover only the price of the hall facility for the night we operate, (having negotiated a special rate ... thanks committee!). We have managed to grant aid some youngsters through development courses and now have a tested qualified coach who has been through the Badminton Wales scheme as well as younger players who regularly train with the Welsh National Squad. We are exceptionally fortunate in having a coaching session run by a talented coach and her family, based in the Leisure Centre in Brecon. At last we have somewhere we can send young talent to be nurtured and developed.

Our evening starts with a warm up session where the youngsters operate across our single court. During this time we may take some aside for development coaching. The court is then reconstructed to allow what is officially called ‘crocodiles’ where as long as a youngster can stay out of trouble they can achieve a pass to a short singles “best of 3” type game. The last part of the evening is taken up by a game known as “champions and challengers” where a player does not know who they will be partnered with but will play a best of 3 doubles game against a pair of champions who can be champions for a limited time before they are defeated or replaced. This ensures everyone has a chance to play, and organised / skilled pairs play several games.

The origin of the game and the modern rules can be found in other places. Local rules are judged so that when the shuttle hits the ceiling or hanging lights and has its flight deflected there is a fault. The game depends on players putting the shuttle on to the ground and in advanced single games involves making your opponent do what you want them to do and move to where you have them at a disadvantage. The racquet is held loosely and a rapid deceleration of the shuttle allows the player to change their choice of shot up to the moment of play. Our problem is that children in this area are too nice and apologise to each other when winning a point. It does mean however that a crowded busy session can happen with few injuries and good natured banter replacing the hard core game.

Now time moves on and after many years I am hoping someone will take on running the club. Not an onerous task but pending operations and old age really mean I should be out of there! So if you fancy a Wednesday evening’s activity please ring or come and see the event. Dave Hope - 658 106.

We had a great turnout for our launch event in October. Our guest speaker, Nigel Blackamore provided a detailed account of all the changes currently being made to the Brecknock Museum site in Brecon. It will involve major new building work and the moving of the library, currently on ship street, into the new museum complex. The new complex will include a cafeteria, modern exhibition spaces, resource hub, new community based exhibitions, library, new entrances and the original courtroom which will be revamped to enable it to be used as an interactive space for visitors. To ensure that the launch went with a swing Pat Hope provided a superb buffet which was greatly appreciated by all present.

Our January talk on milling, given to a full house by Historian and Archaeologist Janet Bailey, turned up quite a few surprises. Firstly there were over thirty mills in the area between Brecon , Talgarth and Bwlch. which were primarily water powered. Secondly there was a range of milling products produced besides flour and third, very few mills survive and there is very little photographic evidence. A technique of ariel photography called LIDOR is being used to good effect in identifying lost features of the landscape including long gone mills and their storage ponds and water runs. Perhaps we should consider doing some of our own research!

Future talk: Dr Adrian Humpage , Geologist, will describe how the landscape of the Llangors area has developed and changed due to the forces of nature. Thursday 16th April, 7.30 also at Llangors.

Membership: Access to all our talks is free to members so why not join? Membership is £5 to individuals and £7 for families. Non members pay £3 at the door for every talk. Contact Roger Young (658205).

Speakers: We are currently putting together a list of potential speakers for future talks. If you are able to speak on a local historical topic or can recommend other speakers do please let us know.

Railway Project: Great news. Thanks to the efforts of members of Pennorth Chapel, who raised £270 at their coffee morning in November we have now reached our target of £850 to pay for two of the original wooden signposts from Talyllyn station. We can now

Llyn Syfaddan History Group

gift the signs to the Brecknock Museum for their permanent collection. This will mean that they will be professionally looked after and be available for future generations to see. A BIG THANKS to all those who supported the purchase of the signs A small but unique part of our heritage has been saved!

The railway project group usually meets the first Monday every month at Llanfihangel Talyllyn Community Centre at 7.30. Following the successful renewal of the village hall roof we have now completed the external decoration including new entrance door and windows in the main hall. The main hall has been redecorated and had new blinds and a new heating system fitted. We are continuing to work towards installing the solar panel, extending the heating system, refurbishing the kitchen and toilet facilities. In the meantime the hall is one again open!

We already have some clubs and activities taking place and also private bookings are coming in but we are committed to finding more things to offer and to that end we are interested in your views and open to any suggestions you may have!

Annual report for 2014 for Sri Lanka Rebuild [South Powys]

Boxing day 2014 marked 10 years since the

devastating Tsunami which was the start of our activities. Over the last 10 years we have built 5 pre-schools, refurbished another one and built a health centre. We also helped to refurbish a hospital women’s ward in central Sri Lanka where we knew one of the doctors who had moved there after the Tsunami destroyed her house in Matara.

We continue to support the 5 schools by paying the teachers so that the schooling is free to pupils who are aged up to 6 years. We initially sent 2 container loads of essential goods to help in the immediate aftermath and have since sent some health equipment, sewing machines and other small items. We provided ‘seed funds’ to start up small businesses such as sisal manufacture. Most years we have given gifts such as school bags, pencils and books to all pupils.

Most recently since the end of the war in the north of Sri Lanka we have been involved with the Harmony Scholarship scheme in Kilinochchi and provided scholarships to over 60 children. This benefits the student and their guardians and it is hoped will help give these children the opportunity to have schooling in an area previously shattered by war and the Tsunami. This project is overseen by the Sri Lankan Army.

There are some lovely photos of the schools on our Facebook page. All of our schools were given names of Welsh towns whose populations have been so generous over the 10 years. At our school in Matara province called Brecon the head works with her daughter. There are currently 22 pupils attending from the small fishing village. This school is in a monastery grounds.

Bronllys school also in Matara has 87 pupils and has a head and 2 other teachers. The deputy will most likely take over from the head who plans to leave.

Our three schools in Hambantota province are as follows.Llangorse school has 50 pupils. The head, Girlie, remains hardworking and committed despite bereavement and ill health. The government now provide Tamil only schools and the numbers at Llangorse school have been particularly affected by this. YFenni school has 38 pupils and 2 teachers. Haygarth which is in a very poor area that floods regularly has 18 pupils and 2 teachers. Over the last year we have invested money here in trying to build flood defences around the school.

We continue to give some monies toward refurbishment, redecoration and for equipment at all our schools but their local communities are beginning to take over the ongoing costs. As always we are grateful to Kumari’s sisters in Sri Lanka, Mali and Niluka and their families, for overseeing the payment of teachers and all the works. - without their hard work and dedication this whole project would not have been possible. Our great success has been to have been able to ensure that every penny raised in Powys has gone to the projects in Sri Lanka with no overheads or salaries other than those of the teachers. Our initial efforts in Hambantota were guided by Sajith Premadasa who since the recent elections in Sri Lanka has become Minister of Housing. We have sent our congratulations!

We continue to raise funds with the help of our supporters, our approximately annual curry evenings held in Llangorse village hall and we greatly value the kindness of Hay Festival who have allowed us to collect after many events and the continued generosity of people who attend.

Sri Lanka Rebuild [South Powys] (Trustees:- Kumari Dias, Sriyani Liyanage, Ordrith and Cath Quarrell, Jean Moseley, Ailsa Dunn) and treasurer Lawrence Duffy want to thank all our friends and supporters for their continued support over the last 10 years. In particular to the people of Llangorse and neighboring villages who have been so supportive and generous over the last 10 years. Together we have achieved so much. Diolch yn fawr iawn.
