Rector’s Writ
The Easter message of new life and redemption remains an unfolding
story as we live this earthly journey. It’s a message that reminds us, no
matter what difficulties we face in this life, we don’t face them alone. We’re
enfolded and upheld by a deep sense of hopefulness; a hope anchored in
Christ. Jesus told his disciples that he would return to the Father, and he did.
He promised not to leave them (or us) comfortless, and he didn’t. The Easter
season ends appropriately enough with Pentecost (June 4th this year), at
which time we celebrate again the promised gift of the Holy Spirit to be with
all believers and followers of Christ, to lead us in his truth and teachings.
The Holy Spirit is guide and comforter, the paraklete (in Greek), or one who
walks alongside us.
Following are a few hymn verses which help us focus on the joy and
hopefulness we celebrate in this holy Easter season and on the gift of the
Holy Spirit.
“Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, all our sins on thee were laid: by almighty love anointed, thou
hast full atonement made. / All thy people are forgiven through the virtue of thy blood: opened is the
gate of heaven, reconciled are we with God. / Jesus, hail! enthroned in glory, there for ever to
abide; all the heavenly hosts adore thee, seated at thy Father’s side. / There for sinners thou art
pleading: there thou dost our place prepare; ever for us interceding, till in glory we appear.” (Hymn #495, vs. 2 & 3, Hail, thou once despised Jesus 1982 Hymnal)
“Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire. / Thou the anointing Spirit art,
who dost thy seven fold gifts impart. / Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of
love…Keep far our foes, give peace at home: where thou art guide no ill can come. / Teach us to
know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but One, / that through the ages all along, this may be
our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (from Hymn #503, 1982 Hymnal)
“We thank you, Almighty Father, for that particular expression of your love that is given to us so
selflessly by our mothers. May your blessings fill their lives with peace, strength, and gladness on
Mother’s Day and every day. Amen.” (Author unknown)
A happy Eastertide, happy Pentecost, and happy Mother’s Day
to you and yours.

“MOTHER’S DAY” SPRING BREAKFAST Sunday, May 14th at 9:00 a.m.
Everyone welcome!
Our Fund Raising Committee worked so hard this
last month. Our thanks to Kay Canan, Carol Marotta,
Cherry Monegan, and Courtney Rich for
planning a wonderful luncheon for all of those who
attended. The entertainment, Deerfield Dandies, was
so much fun. The meal was prepared with much
planning and thought, and the presentation was
lovely. It tasted great, too! The event took place on
one of those sunny spring days and everyone had a
really nice time. The members of the committee were
in the midst of making Easter candy during that same
time period. Every weekend for four weeks they
made the most incredible candy that was sold to
church members, family, friends, co-workers and to
members of the community. Thanks ladies for the
incredible amount of work you’ve done!! Phil Rich
is also active in the Fund Raising group, and he was
a huge help in buying candy in bulk, running errands,
getting items off the top kitchen shelves, and
watching over the kids while they helped wrap
candy…
Thanks to John McDonald, Mike Johnson, and
Fred Lundgren for tear ing out and replacing dry
wall, then painting the downstairs men’s room. It
looks great…
John Monegan tells us that we have a r eal
treasure in our church pews. He thinks they’re made
of American chestnut; a tree that is almost extinct in
Ohio. Who knew!...
Tim & Marcia Splinter made a tr ip to
Clarkson University in upstate New York to see their
son Eric in the play Twelve Angry Men. They also
made a brief visit to check in on Marcia’s Mom and
Dad who live in the area…AND they made it back
home--probably without much sleep--to be in the
choir for Palm Sunday! They also received good
news from their son, Kevin, who got a 33 on his
ACT scores; the same score his brother got when he
took the test. Smart boys!!...
Our Sunday school has grown, thanks to Doris
Whipple who has gathered her grandchildren to
be part of the class. Along with MacAyla and Kara
who attend often, Doris brings Athena, Jada, and
Hera when she can. It’s nice having all these
children and youth—the regulars and the new family
members—be part of Sunday school, to join us for
Communion, and to be part of our after church
fellowship as well…
We’ve been blessed with a wonderful new
addition to our church family. Amir and Stefanie
Amiruzzaman are proud parents of a new baby
boy born on March 29th. His name is Aleo Anzo, and
he’s one beautiful baby! God’s blessings and our
congratulations to Amir & Stefanie and Aleo…
Jim & Nancy Ervin’s granddaughter, Kelly is a
very good basketball player. On their road trip to
Cincinnati, her traveling team (“Extreme”) won three
of their four games and now they’ll be off to
Chicago. Good luck girls!...
Members of the Sit & Stitch group made Twiddle
Muffs to donate to local nursing homes. These are
“sleeves” or muffs that can be sewn, knitted, or
crocheted, and then embellished with buttons,
zippers, ribbon, and beads. These sleeves help
residents with Alzheimer’s and Senile Dementia as
they give them something to “play” with or
“twiddle”. Over 30 were made by the Sit & Stitch
group along with other church members and were
distributed by Mary Jean McDonald, Carolyn
Englert, Shirley & Mike Johnson, and Marsha
Snyder, to Longmeadow Care Center and the
Woodlands. Thanks to everyone who helped with
this project…
Jim Ervin was at Marc’s and he spoke to a
women as she was purchasing her Easter flowers. He
teased her about buying one for him, and of course
he took home a lovely tulip. Ask and ye shall
receive!...
What a glorious Easter we had here at Grace
Church. It was a beautiful day and what made it
really special was seeing many friends and members
that we hadn’t seen in a while. There were 125
people who came to celebrate the resurrection of our
Lord! Thanks to everyone who made this so special.
First of all we have to thank Rev. Carol for all her
work--not only on Easter but all through Holy Week.
Did You Know?...
Grace Episcopal Church Century Prayer
Our Gracious Heavenly Father, we give You thanks on the occasion of the bicentenni-
al celebration of the Episcopal Church in Ohio. We honor the brave and diligent early
members of our families of faith who established congregations in what was wilderness,
and we gratefully acknowledge the heritage with which we have been endowed. As we
approach a new century of faith, may we face it with equal courage and steadfastness
of heart. Give us strength to engage the wilderness present in our own age—hatred,
bigotry, ignorance, fear, poverty, hunger, injustice, oppression. Lord, strengthen us for
this work. Guide our hearts and our hands to do Your will. Help us to see Christ in all
we serve. And may we know the joy of Your presence among us as we live into our
faith. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
That was a lot of sermons. The Altar Guild including
our Sacristan Nancy Lundgren, Nancy Ervin, Sally
Dier, Jane Gear-Jozsa, Cindy Hoskins, Mike &
Shirley Johnson, Bette Brooks, Carol Marotta,
and Rev. Carol cleaned the altar area and
decorated with the flowers that were chosen and
delivered to the church by Marsha Snyder and Cathy
Potisuk. To our choir and organist for the
beautiful Easter music. To Kay Canan who baked a
lovely cake for the coffee hour of both services and
Nancy & Jim Ervin for serving it. And to Carol
Marotta & Cherry Monegan for the beautiful
cookies and the reception after the 10:00 a.m.
service. Cherry Monegan did her magic and
decorated the parish hall to make it look very festive.
Thanks to everyone who donated flowers in
thanksgiving or to honor the memory of their loved
ones. Thanks to Chris Stickle and her daughters and
helpers for offering an Easter egg hunt and craft
project for our youth. They loved it. After Easter
Rev. Carol and the church secretary took a much
needed vacation. While they were gone Charles
Parsons preached at the Morning Prayer services
and Bette Brooks (at 8am) and Steve Merrill (at
10am) served as Worship Leaders. A big thank you
to those folks for their willingness to serve…
We received a note from Phyllis Shorts and she
wishes everyone a Joyous Easter and says they are all
well. ..
Please welcome some new people to our flock;
Dan & Shala Kearsey and their baby Luke, and
Karen Krofta. We are delighted to have you
worship with us.
The Bulletin Board
Outreach
We will continue with Outreach this year giving food to the Center of Hope as
well as personal items (which they were happy to have). They were so grateful
for these items. Please continue to take your clothing to the County Clothing
Center. The APL is always in need of food and other items for the animals (see
the list on the bin in the Parish Hall). Don’t forget to mark the Outreach sheet
when you donate items; the list is in the parish hall. We donated about 200 lbs.
of clothing to the CCC and more than 200 non-perishable food items to the
Center of Hope. The 200s Challenge is part of celebrating the 200th anniversary
year of the Diocese of Ohio. Please help us serve others by being generous in
our outreach.
Thank you for your generosity.
HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE
The Hospitality Committee is in need of more volunteers willing to take meals to members of the church who are ill and need temporary assistance. A home cooked meal is very nice, but if you’re unable to do that, you can order “take out” meals, food from local delis, purchase gift cards from local restaurants, and/or have food delivered. Please see Nancy Ervin if you are able to help with this ministry.
GRACIE’S BACK DOOR Gracie’s Back Door is in need of several items such as paper towels, spray furniture polish, hand soap (liquid), and dish detergent. Gracie’s has the following medical and handicap supplies that are available to those in need. We do not charge for them, rather they are given away: 4 blood pressure monitors, 1 shower stool, 1 shower bench, 1 never used raised toilet seat, 1 suction grab bar, 2 pairs of crutches, 3 canes, 2 baby monitors, 1 tray that fits on a walker, 2 bedside commodes, 1 oxygen tank holder on wheels, 1 bed rail, 1 wheel chair, 1 stationary walker, and 1 folding walker. If you know anyone in need, please let us know. --Sally Dier & Nancy Lundgren
Fathers (and Mothers) and Friends By Bette Brooks
They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still.
The world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus' will.
The Rt. Rev. William Leonard 4th Bishop of Ohio
William Andrew Leonard was born in Southport, Connecticut, on July 15, 1848. While attending
St. Stephen’s College in New York he became interested in the priesthood. At 20 years old, he
entered Berkley Divinity School and, upon graduation, he was ordained deacon by Bishop John
Williams the founder of the School. He went to his childhood church, Holy Trinity, Brooklyn,
and served for 1 year. The following year Bishop Williams ordained Leonard priest and he then
served the Church of the Redeemer, Brooklyn, for 8 years. While there, he married Sarah Louisa
Sullivan and wrote Via Sacra: Or Footprints of Christ, a book that described the events of
Christ’s last week of earthly life.
In 1880, he became rector of St. John’s, Washington, DC. In January 1888, Bishop Bedell of
Ohio asked for the election of an assistant bishop. After 3 failed special conventions with no
candidate elected, Leonard was elected at the 4th convention on May 15, 1889. As soon (literally)
as Leonard was consecrated, Bedell resigned, making Leonard the 4th bishop of Ohio.
As an independently wealthy man, Leonard was able to connect and built relationships with the
wealthy. The Leonards built a large mansion on the portion of Euclid Avenue known as
“Millionaires Row.” He used these connections to persuade the wealthy to pour their money into
the church. This resulted in the creation and building of The Church Home and Trinity Cathedral,
which was consecrated in September 1907. In addition, several buildings were constructed on the
Kenyon College campus as a result of large donations. He also dedicated a significant portion of
his time to the inhabitants of The Church Home as well as to those at St. John’s Orphanage that
became St. John’s Home for Girls located in Painesville. He then secured additional funds for the
operation and expansion of the home.
From 1913 until 1924, Frank DuMoulin, bishop Coadjutor, assisted Leonard, and from 1925 until
1930, Warren L. Rogers did the same. In 1929 and 1930, Leonard became the temporary
Presiding Bishop of the American Church on the basis of his seniority in the House of Bishops.
On September 23, 1930, Bishop Leonard died at Gambier and was buried next to his beloved
Sarah in the crypt of Trinity Cathedral. Bishop Leonard served the Diocese of Ohio for 41 years.
These were years marked by the expansion of the church in Ohio, both in numbers of
communicants and in church buildings, as well as in missionary zeal for service to others.
