Greetings AUSA members and Friends of the U.S. Army,
This is the first of three newsletters we send every 12 months. We hope you take the time to catch up on what AUSA is doing in greater Tucson.
Your AUSA Chapter continues to be a beacon in the community for the U.S. Army; Active, Guard and Reserve. Thanks to your support and membership, our Chapter not only raises awareness of the U.S. Army in greater Tucson but we are a major supporter of Army Soldiers and their families. We know Soldiers greatly appreciate the recognition and support that your membership provides them.
During the spring and summer months, your Chapter continued its support in many ways. We purchased and presented 25 copies of the U.S. Army Officer Guide to the graduating Class of 2018 of Army ROTC Cadets at the University of Arizona. I still have my copy from 42 years ago! The Chapter also presented awards to cadets and attended their Commissioning ceremony. The Chapter purchased 25 two-year AUSA memberships for the Class of 2020 Cadets to help prepare them to become better officers.
The Chapter showed its appreciation for U.S. Army Recruiters by sponsoring a breakfast for the Tucson U.S. Army Recruiting Company.
Message from the Chapter PresidentThe Chapter leadership met with the staff and Family Readiness Group Leader of A Company, 1st Battalion 158th Infantry, Arizona Army National Guard. We discussed how AUSA can support them during the unit’s one year deployment.
We also celebrated the 243rd U.S. Army Birthday with the Tucson Chamber Military Affairs Committee and Army Recruiters with a cake and singing the Army Song. Just recently, our Chapter participated in a Veterans Welcome Back at the University of Arizona and a VA Hospital Operation Reintegration.
Our Chapter is sponsoring 45 Arizona Army National Guard Soldiers to attend the Arizona State Army Aviation Ball later this month and is already planning for the big annual AUSA Awards & Recognition Dinner scheduled for Thursday, November 8, 2018. Mark your calendars!
With this being just some of what your Chapter has been up to, you can see how important your membership is because that is how we provide our support. We thank you for your loyalty and continued membership to AUSA.

U.S. Army – Be Informed
In this newsletter we are highlighting three components of the U.S. Army; the Active Component, Army National Guard, and the Army Reserve.
It is important for young men and women, parents and other engaged civilians to know about the U.S. Army so they can either make an informed choice or help others who may want to take advantage of the educational benefits, skilled training and service to country that the U.S. Army provides.
Besides the U.S. Army’s Active Component, their are two Reserve Components—the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve. Both Reserve Components are primarily composed of part-time soldiers who train once a month and conduct two to three weeks of annual training each year. Both the Active Component and the Army Reserve are organized under Title 10 of the United States Code. The National Guard is organized under Title 32, meaning that, while the Army National Guard is organized, trained and equipped as a component of the U.S. Army, individual units are under the command of individual state's governors. However, units of the National Guard can be federalized by presidential order.
A person can apply to enter the Army as an enlisted Soldier or as an Officer. You also have the choice of serving full-time Active Duty, or part time as a member of the Army National Guard or Army Reserve. There is also a program called the Simultaneous Membership Program where you train to become and officer in college ROTC while you are an enlisted member of the Army National Guard or Army Reserve.

U.S. Army – Be Informed, continued
Joining the Active Component, Army National Guard or Army Reserve starts with a recruiter or applying online. Your application process begins with an evaluation to make sure you meet the educational, mental, physical, moral, and health standards. If you are choosing to become an enlisted soldier, an Army guidance counselor will help you select a specialty. After basic training, you will attend a full-time training course that could be six months or more. You then will continue your employment as a soldier in the Active Component, Army National Guard or Army Reserve. If you choose to become an officer, you should contact either an ROTC program at a college or university and/or West Point admissions. If you qualify, ROTC programs have scholarships. Applying for West Point is a long process that should begin your junior year of high school. If accepted, West Point is tuition free.

The Army Reserve is a community-based federal force, unlike the National Guard which is under the control of the Governors. The Army Reserve is a critical force provider of trained and ready units and Soldiers providing full spectrum capabilities essential for the Army to fight and win wars and respond to homeland emergencies on behalf of the American people.

As an Army National Guard Soldier, you'll respond when disaster strikes at home. You'll also answer the call when your country needs you around the world. While at home, you will work one weekend a month and two to three weeks a year. By federal law, your civilian employment is protected while you are serving.
