The seriousness of crime in South Africa

The distinctive feature of crime in South Africa is its violence. Three categories of crime are far too high by international standards – murder, robbery and rape – These crimes generate high levels of fear and feelings of insecurity.

Reported crime increased year-on-year from 1998/9 and peaked in 2002/3, but has subsequently decreased year-on-year

Positive gains made since 2002/3 were reversed in the latter part of 2005 and early part of 2006. The country experienced a security industry strike and a bad crime spike

The Crime Spike formed the catalyst for the strengthening of Government/Business partnership in the fight against crime
