Writing Style
• The Gospel of Mark was writing to please a poor, Gentile group of people. Basically people who do not believe in Judaism.
• It’s shorter then the other Gospels because there was some loss of information and also there was a lot of editing within his Gospel.
There are a couple of major themes in Mark’s Gospel:◦ Messianic Secret: Mark makes Jesus a mysterious
and secretive being throughout his writings.◦ The Death of Jesus: Even though all of the Gospel
writers wrote about Jesus’ death on the cross. Mark goes in depth about it and makes it the main part of his Gospel.
The author of Mark’s Gospel is not actually Mark himself.
It was actually composed of several writers which included:
Papias, Irenaeus, Clemet of Alexandria, and many more
Most scholars date the Gospel of Mark to sometime between 60 AD and 80 AD. It was probably the earliest of the four gospels and a source used by Matthew and Luke.
Mark was mostly written for Gentiles but more specifically it was intended for Rome and Nero's persecutions ◦ Reasons why it originated in Rome
The audience is clearly Gentile because Mark often explains Jewish terms and customs
The audience seems to have experienced persecution
Peter is believed to have spent the last part of his life in Rome
Association with the Roman church would explain its authoritative position in the early church
