It’s time to give and help those in need! Roy Gomm’s annual Thanksgiving Food

Drive will begin in early November. We will be collecting different Thanksgiving food

items for each grade level. Be looking for a flyer to come home with your child at the

end of October. This year we will be helping families at Gomm, Alice Smith, and with-

in our community. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance this year,

please contact the school counselor, Annie Solvason, at Asolva-

[email protected].

Denim & Spring 2018

We will hold the first Denim & Spring Volunteer meeting

on Tuesday October 24th, 2017 at 6:00 pm. Please join us as we discuss plans

and ideas for our derby-themed fundraiser and organize sub-committees. Your in-

put and assistance are critical to the success of the event, especially those of you

with past experience. If interested, please contact [email protected]. You

YOU in advance to our wonder-

MEMBERS NEEDED…

If you have yet to join the PFA, now is the time! The membership fee is $20 and includes the ever-so-handy Roy Gomm directory. The directory is a great resource

when planning birthday parties, play dates, or getting in-formation about homework and assignments. If you

choose not to join the PFA, a directory can purchased in the office for $10. To join the PFA and/or to be included

in the directory, you must fill out a Membership/Directory form attached here. Additionally, a copy of

this form will be coming home in your child’s backpack this week. October 31st is the last day forms will be ac-

cepted for directory entries. Thanks!

Three Great Reasons to join the PFA...

• GET CONNECTED. Know what’s going on at your child’s school! The PFA addresses issues that are im-

portant to parents and public school administrators. We fight for full funding, quality teachers, and capac-

ity for our school to thrive.

• MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Involved parents understand the challenges schools face and become part of

the solution.

• LEAD BY EXAMPLE. The children love your involvement in their school and education.

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe by Marilyn Knuth, MS, RD

This recipe serves a crowd, but if you are only cooking for one or two, it is great for leftovers and freezes well!

• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

• 3-4 large carrots, peeled and chopped

• 3-4 stalks of celery, peeled and chopped

• 1 large red onion, diced

• 1-2 large turnips, peeled and chopped

• 8 cups of low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth

• 1 tsp poultry seasoning

• 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

• 1 bunch kale, stems removed, thinly sliced

• 1 package Grandma’s frozen egg noodles, thawed (locally I can find them at Raley’s)

• 1-2 cups frozen green peas

• Salt and pepper to taste Heat the oil over medium to medium-high heat in a large soup pot or Dutch oven. Add the carrots, celery, onion and turnip, and saute until tender (about 5-7 minutes) stirring frequently. Add the chicken broth and poultry seasoning and bring to a boil. Add the chicken to the boiling broth; reduce heat to medium, cover and cook for 10 minutes. Remove the lid and add the sliced kale. When the kale is wilted (about 1-2 minutes), add the noo-dles (make sure the broth is still at a rolling boil and that the noodles are separated from one another). After the noodles are cooked (approximately 10-15 minutes), add the frozen peas and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Sea-son with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!
