As of the end of November, the parish is running a small surplus - $1,004 – for its operations this year. Our revenues are down by $40,700 compared to the same point last year, while expenditures are down by $46,500. The parish is paying a little more on the mortgage principal than it did last year, which leaves us in a slightly better financial position than last year at this time. December is usually a month where the parish collects significant revenues, especially as parishioners often increase their donations for Christmas and many people who are not regular mass attendees help fill the church. Given the COVID restrictions, large numbers of visitors are unlikely. However, Enbridge has paid the parish another $5,000 to extend the use of the parking lot until January 15, 2021, as it fixes a problem with the gas lines across Innes Road, near the church. In addition, the parish is still waiting to receive roughly $11,000 in payments from the federal government in respect of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy. As an early warning, the parish has requested the approval of the Diocese to replace the carpets in the rectory with hardwood flooring. The carpets are the original ones installed when the church was built in 1998 and were never of the highest quality. After more than 20 years, they are definitely in need of replacement. Expenses of more than $15,000 require Diocesan approval, and the Diocese will be taking a decision in the next week. This work will be undertaken in February. Funds collected from the Building and Maintenance second collection on February 14, 2021 will be used to offset this expense. As always, we rely on your continued generous support to keep the church in operation. Please remember that you can make donations at the church or online from the parish website. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families. Faithfully yours, Sean Keenan Chair, Good Shepherd Finance Council

Update from the Finance Council –

The Finance Council met earlier this week to review the parish’s financial position and discuss issues related to the operation of the church, rectory and property.

    Faithfully yours,

Sean Keenan Chair, Good Shepherd Finance Council

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Saint Alphonsus Liguori

    Hello Pastors and Parish staffs,

I’m writing to share with you an exciting initiative for this Christmas. It’s a media campaign titled “The Call Home.” The campaign was created out of a concern that some of our brothers and sisters who come to Mass at Christmas don’t come at any other time of year. In years past we’ve been able to accommodate them but this year will be very different.

A wonderful group of Catholics from our archdiocese have created a message that we hope will reach those who know that Christmas is important but aren’t sure what it means for their lives. The Call Home uses local personal testimonies to present the basic message of the Gospel. Near the end of the video viewers will be invited to respond to God calling them to be at home with him. The video will conclude with a personal greeting from me.

The purpose of this email is to let you know that someone from The Call Home campaign will be contacting your parish to ask you to take a few actions that will help us get this video to those who need to see it.

As the Church of Ottawa-Cornwall, let us pray that despite the challenges of celebrating Christmas during a pandemic, we will see hearts converted to our loving God.

I appreciate all that you do every day for the sake of our Church and for its people!

✠ Marcel Damphousse Archbishop of Ottawa-Cornwall

    Message from Diocesan Staff:

We encourage you to take a few moments and watch the short clips that serve as a “teaser” to the full 12-minute video that will be released on December 15th. You may find these short testimonials on our website: www.thecallhome.com We promise you won’t be disappointed!

News from the Knights of Columbus Council 9005 Good Shepherd Parish

Knights of Columbus Online Christmas Concert "Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord”, Eph.5:19. It is fitting to begin with these words, for on Wednesday 02 December, The Good Shepherd Parish celebrated their faith in the form of a concert presented by the Parish Music Ministry. This was done in thanksgiving for the successful collection in aid of our Christmas Food Hampers and our Coats for Kids Programme. The concert was preceded by a message of congratulations and encouragement from Archbishop Marcel Damphousse. Br. Steve Hughes was the Host and introductory words of appreciation were given by our Worthy Grand Knight, Dem Magmanlac. Steve Hughes also served as our producer and he did a phenomenal job. Familiar Christmas numbers ranging from O Little Town of Bethlehem, Do you Hear What I Hear?, O Holy Night, and many other well-known renditions were sung by the GSP All-Stars accompanied variously, by piano, keyboard, guitar, djembe drum, violin and flute. Our Worthy Grand Knight, Dem Magnanlac, explained the Mission of the Order. The Knights are here to do as Jesus did, i.e., to serve and not to be served. They are a fraternal organization who are practising and practical Catholics. They serve the poor and needy as the case may be. With that in mind Br. Doug O'Reilly acknowledged that the collection for our charities far exceeded our targets. In fact, we collected over $11,000.00. This will pay for 35 food hampers and 48 winter coats. He thanked individual Knights for their generous contributions. He also thanked many local businesses who in the middle of the COVID pandemic and with difficult business conditions, nevertheless made generous contributions. Remember the words of John 15:14-16: "You are my friends if you do what I command". This Christmas, the Knights helped to feed the poor, clothe those kids in need and contributed to other charities. They are therefore truly friends of Christ. They have given of themselves unselfishly and are therefore worthy of His lasting blessings. Blessed Michael McGivney pray for us.
