And while these are useful channels for sharing the good news, the most effective evangelism still happens person to person, neighbor to neighbor. It’s not a “recruiting” process meant to serve numerical growth goals - it’s about meeting people at their point of need with the good news of Jesus, and standing ready to support them through the challenges of life with the agape love of Christ. I have to brag on our friend, Rex Timms, this week. Rex came to me with a desire to reach out to new residents in his community, and we worked together to craft the following simple letter: Hello, neighbor! My name is Rex Timms, and I’m a resident of Pecan Plantation and a member of First Christian Church of Granbury. I heard you moved in recently, and I just wanted to drop you a quick line to say hello and ask if there's anything that I or my church can do for you. I can be reached at 817-573-5805, and my pastor, Justin Jeter, can be reached at 817-219-4910 or at [email protected]. If you’d like to come worship with us, we’re at 2109 W Hwy 377 in Granbury, right next door to Tractor Supply. I hope you’re enjoying your new home, and I hope to meet you soon! Peace and blessings, Rex There’s an important difference between Rex’s letter and the promotional efforts of most congregations. The latter tend to focus on what they have: “We have this great building and these awesome programs! Come see us!” But this letter focuses on the recipient: “What do you need? How can we help?” Donald Miller argues that this is the key to effective evangelism - that it must not be about us, but about God and the people we’re hoping to reach. If you are interested in doing something like this in your neighborhood, or just reaching out to people you know, let me know. I’d love to help you put something together! Please and blessings, Justin

Scripture Reading: Job 22:21-30 ♥ Sermon text: Matthew 6:7-15 Sermon Title: “Let Us Pray, Part 3 - Patterns of Prayer”

    SIMPLE, POWERFUL EVANGELISM

In this day and age, many people think that evangelism is about coming up with the most clever social media campaign or most creative newspaper ad.

Rex came to me with a desire to reach out to new residents in his community, and we worked together to craft the following simple letter:

Hello, neighbor! My name is Rex Timms, and I’m a resident of Pecan Plantation and a member of First Christian Church of Granbury. There’s an important difference between Rex’s letter and the promotional efforts of most congregations.

  • Sweet Hour of Prayer! March 15, 2017 The Good News

    Adopt a Prayer Station

Holy Week is a special time for prayer and reflection. This year we want to provide the community with space and resources for connecting with God through prayer stations. These stations will be set up throughout the church building and grounds so that individuals can use them throughout Holy Week during designated times and office hours.

What is a prayer station? A prayer station is a space (as small as an end table or as big as a room or field) that often contains everyday objects or artwork/music, a scripture reference, and some simple instructions or reflection questions to guide the participant in prayer.

    Examples:

♥ Example #1: A simple, interactive station could be housed on a small table featuring a shoebox covered in newspaper with a slit in the top (ballot box). On the table is a sheet of paper that contains a Bible verse about prayer and gives instructions to pray-er to use the provided slips of paper to write a prayer for the community and the issues of the community that one might read about in the newspaper. The slips of paper can then be inserted into ballot box.

♥ Example #2: A small table that features two bowls on it--one containing water and the other containing small sponges. A tri-fold poster can feature scripture about "living water". A single paragraph reflection is printed that invites people to consider physical and spiritual thirst along with instructions for participants to take a sponge and place it in the water bowl asking God to refresh our spirits with living water and then directions to squeeze some of the water out while praying about how God calls us to provide "water" to those who are thirsty.

♥ Example #3: An outdoor station might include laminated cards posted in a folder pouch near an exit of the building. The cards invite pray-ers to walk to the grounds of the church or sit outside and notice nature. This card could contain scripture verses and some reflection questions that encourage the participant to compare his or her own faith development to the growth of the trees and plants on the grounds.

What does adopting a prayer station involve? An individual, family, or group/class can commit to providing a station. This adoption includes coming up with the idea/or borrowing idea, gathering materials for your station, providing Pastor Tiffany with a one sentence description of your station and communicating your space needs (big or small) to her, and the actual set up and take down of station. We'd like to have the stations go up between April 3-9 so they can be experienced from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday (April 9- 16). Take down should be completed between April 16-19th.

Resources? Please see Tiffany if you'd like to view or borrow her "Prayer Station Resource Notebook". It has great photos and descriptions of prayer stations that will spark your creativity. Many internet sites, including Pintrest, contain great resources for prayer stations.

Sign Me Up! Please contact Pastor Tiffany to sign up for a space. You do not need to have a developed idea to sign up--the ideas will come. We just need to know that you or your group wants to develop a station.

A bit of levity for lent!

    GOD'S PLAN FOR AGING

Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things, thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach and stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good.

The God considered the function of the bladder and decided seniors would have additional calls of nature requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was good.

So, if you find as you age, you are getting up and down more, remember it's God's will. It is all in your best interest even though you mutter under your breath.

SIX IMPORTANT FACTS TO REMEMBER AS WE GROW OLDER

    ▪ Death is the number 1 killer in the world.

    ▪ Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.

    ▪ Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.

    ▪ All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.

    ▪ In the 60's people took LSD to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.

    ▪ Life is like a jar of jalapeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow.
