The Good News of
Second Baptist Church
Greetings and grace to you in HIS all powerful and personal name, JESUS. I am so glad that as we see changes going on all around us, HE is immutable - never changing. Quiet is the word of the day. Sunday morning at Second Baptist 7:45 am. Yes, this will be one of the quiet moments you can come and find yourself. That is not to say our Lord does not work through noise, numerous lives, and planned ministry, He also works in silence, “Be still and know that I am God”. Knowing Him is far better than knowing about HIM. What do you do when you celebrate victories? This day 21 years ago, God brought a little girl into our lives which changed our lives personally and eternally. Lydia, the first of five grandchildren, so we’ve been able to love her the longest! I thank God for His unspeakable love, grace, and mercy and the blessing of our other four, “Lewis, Landon, Buck, and Lilah”. Remember, we are entering the Season of Thanksgiving! Somehow, I need to celebrate Thanksgiving through Thanksliving - everyday! To do this, I would only need to slow down and speak up. To slow down, I am not talking about retirement. I am speaking about managing my time and resources to His glory. The second part of my equation is Speak Up! I was wearing a certain shirt yesterday (10/21) in Wal-Mart, and a fellow stopped and inquired of its meaning - what a great way to share HIM with others. “In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Pastor Derwin

Numbered lists grab our attention. In the checkout aisle or on the internet, we gravitate toward head-ings such as “10 ways to lose weight by summer!” or “3 simple steps to acing that test!” Ancient Jewish sages urged people to count out and speak at least 100 blessings, or statements of grati-tude, each day. What would happen if we intention-ally listed 100 blessings daily? Can you imagine?! What if the first blessing we counted was simply the day itself? “Thank you, God, for this brand new day!” “Bless my use of this day, Lord, that I might glorify you.” Scripture encourages such awareness and promises an additional blessing in return: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12, NIV). —Heidi Mann

The Pumpkins are a Jumping in J.A.M.! We are starting a series about the Pumpkin Patch this Fall and we will be studying How God’s Pumpkin Patch can teach us about His Love! If you want to know what is on your child’s heart, slip into the JAM Hall of Faith and see their prayer requests and answered prayers on the Prayer Wall. Each child has an opportunity to put their prayer requests to the Lord on the Prayer Wall. It will totally humble and amaze you what is on their hearts and who they pray for! Thanks to our JAM Parents for all of your prayers, love and support! The Lord is adding more children to His ministry. Please pray that we will be led by His Spirit to share Christ with these fabulous children!
Please plan to help out with UPWARD Evaluations on November 11, 8AM – Noon.
We are so excited to begin preparing for our 18th year of Upward Basketball. It is our sincere desire that you
begin to consider ways that you can involve yourself in this wonderful ministry. Over the 18 years that our church
has provided this ministry, we have directly impacted over 1500 students and their families. In fact, this past year,
I (Daniel) coached the child of a child I had coached in our very first season of UPWARD 18 years ago. What a priv-
ilege to share the news of Jesus’ great love for us from generation to generation. Below are areas in which we will
need help. If you don’t see somewhere you think you would fit, remember, as Bro Derwin says, we are only lim-
ited by our creativity.
Coaches – Coaches have a direct impact on students and their families. There is one practice a week and one
game a week so you are only committing for 2-3 hours a week. Even if you do not have a sports or basketball
background we can provide you with the tools to have a successful and encouraging season of coaching young
basketball players.
Referees – Without these men and ladies it would be mad chaos. A willingness to blow a whistle and move up
and down the court is all that is needed for this fun area of service.
Concessions – By far, the favorite part of UPWARD! There are several different opportunities to serve in this part
of UPWARD; Coordinator for Friday night, Coordinator for Saturday mornings, Cook, Shopper, and concession
workers.
Scorekeepers – Keeping track of players on the courts and making sure that scores are kept for the games that
require them. Scorekeepers are vital for keeping us to our time table and allowing us to honor the times that we
have posted for our players and their families.
Plan to serve!
