All God's children are welcome, wherever they are
from, whatever their age, the contents of their wallet, how they
speak, and whatever their abilities or disabilities.
We welcome all because Jesus welcomes all: Individuals and
families of any race or culture, sexual orientation, gender
identity, gender expression, or relationship status.
All are one, reconciled to God in Christ Jesus.
You Are Welcome Here.

NOTE FROM PASTOR
Many of you have already heard about the closure of one agency and reductions of many refugee resettlement
services in Nashville and across our country. Here in Nashville, World Relief, a major resettlement agency, is
closing its doors effective this September. Catholic Charities resettlement program has laid off 14 staff members
and other organizations are restructuring to try to continue to serve in the face of these severe cutbacks in
resources. Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services is also being affected in a similar manner.
Who thought that a three month pause in resettlement activity would have such profound impact? But with the
reduction of numbers of refugees accepted in addition to this pause it has crippled agencies – most who are
faith-based, who provide the care and services that are needed.
What does this mean? For the families here, it means that some of the support services that they were to receive
may not be available. It may mean that planned reunions with loved ones waiting to come through the system
may not happen or be delayed for a long time. It means that people of faith will be asked to respond, to help
step into the gap in whatever way we can to help our new neighbors adjust to this new community and country
and thrive – we will be called to be the love of Jesus for them.
Remember, ours is a living faith, one that is enfleshed and embodied in lives lived out in our communities and
for our neighbors. Thank you for your partnership in the Gospel here at Christ! Thank you for what you do and
how you give of yourselves to be there for your neighbors in need. Together, let us live into the radical welcome
and hospitality we pray to be able to do every Sunday morning knowing that in caring for those who are in
need, we are indeed caring for Christ in our midst.
God’s love and peace,
Pastor+
37Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry
and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38
And when was
it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you
clothing? 39
And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' 40
And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the
least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.'
Matthew 25:37-40

Faith, Sexism, Justice: Conversations
Toward a Social Statement The ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ invites you to join a growing conversation and to
add your input. After receiving feedback from more than 100 Listening Events and hearing from several dozen
specialists, the task force has written the study “Faith, Sexism, Justice: Conversations Toward a Social
Statement” as way to invite broad engagement with the questions and issues.
This modular study includes a range of topics that can be used in different combinations to meet the learning
needs and interests of different groups or individuals. The response period runs until Aug. 31, 2017. Below you
will find links to the complete study or to each individual piece as well as the response forms. Printed copies
can be ordered at http://resources.elca.org or call 800-638-3522. Cost is $4.00 per copy plus shipping.

WATOTO CHOIR APRIL 27th 7pm
Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled extensively since 1994, sharing a message of hope for Africa’s orphans
and widows. To date, the choir has toured six continents and performed to enthralled audiences in schools,
retirement homes, churches, parliaments, state houses and royal palaces Each child in the Watoto Children’s
Choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents and now lives in a Watoto village. The experience of
travelling on a choir helps the children to develop confidence and boldness, as well as broadening their
worldview.

Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission by sharing personal stories,
music and dance. While on the road, the children act as advocates for the millions of other African children who
have experienced the same heartbreaking pain and suffering as them.
OVERNIGHT HOSTS NEEDED!
9 Host families are needed for April 27 after the performance for lodging of 2 children each. They are to return
to the church for breakfast the next morning.
CLCW NEWS We had a wonderful Cluster meeting on March 11 at St. Timothy’s in Hendersonville. We were given the
travel trophy this year. It’s a gold telescope, very appropriate and in the church office. Please stop by and take a
look it.
We are planning a women’s retreat, hopefully soon! We will keep you posted as to when and where. Always a
good time of food, fun and most importantly fellowship!
Also, on the horizon is our annual Mother’s Day luncheon on May 7, following worship - more to follow.
We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate friendship meals for bereavement or hospitalized family members.
This would entail making a few phone calls to get someone to bring a main dish, someone else to bring a salad
and someone to bring rolls, also someone to deliver the friendship meal. Please prayerfully consider
volunteering for this very gratifying service.
Mary Behnke has been our friendship meal coordinator for many years! We want to thank Mary for her service,
amazing and remarkable job countless times over the years!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
God’s blessings,
Kay

KISWAHILI LUTHERAN MISSION HAD SPECIAL GUESTS AND
SOMR NEW PARTNERS IN MINISTRY! Messiah Lutheran
Church, Madison, AL and Rise Ministries from Nashville came together March 25
th to see the mission’s work and to begin and nurture this new relationship! Thank you
for your partnership in ministry!
9
Every Saturday at Christ you will find a busy classroom of children and youth as well as Ellen Koester from
LST and volunteers from Vanderbilt and other organizations helping children learn English and catch up on
skills that are needed to succeed in school. If you can help provide snacks and materials, please see Pastor
Esther.
NUBAYNI CONNECTION CENTER BEGINS During the week around Christ
you may find Pastor Robert Kamao teaching an English class or helping someone learn how to use the
microwave or the dishwasher. It’s all part of the ministry called Nubanyi Connection Center which was created
to help new immigrant families as they move into a new country with a new and unfamiliar language. This is
an especially important ministry that we share in as many of the refugee services in Nashville are closing or
have closed due to budget cuts and decreased federal funding. Listen for more updates about this important
ministry being carried out here at Christ!
