introduction 5
H A ( c.180 BC) , .5 I , , G
.There was probably a hierarchy among Mycenaean divinities, asPoseidon is mentioned most and receives the greatest number o oer-
ings in Pylos. Rather surprisingly, he almost certainly had a wie,
Posidaeja (PY Tn 316.4), just as Zeus seems to have had a wie Diwia,
who survived in outlying Pamphylia,6 but who was already replaced in
Mycenaean times by Hera.7 Zeus and Hera even have a son, Drimios
(PY Tn 316.89), but he, too, is no longer attested in the frst millennium.
As in classical times, some o these gods seem to have had an epithet,
an important part o the Greek divine personality, which is gradually
receiving long overdue attention.8 This is especially clear in the case
o Potnia, a generic epithet that was applied to dierent goddesses and
determined by a reerence to a cult place or a specifc characteristic. The
topographical title Potnia o Atana (KN V 5.1) is comparable to other
topographical epithets, such as Apollo Delios or Aphrodite Paphia, and
the Potnia o the horses (PY An 181.1) looks very much like the later
Athena Hippia or Poseidon Hippios, o the horses. The most intrigu-
ing combination is Hermes Areias (PY Tn 316.7), which resembles thelater Athena Areia or Aphrodite Areia.9 But whereas in classical Greek
religion a goddess is always combined with the adjectival orm o a god,
or vice versa,30 this is clearly not yet the case in Mycenaean times.
