Design draws from a process. The smallest inspiration can lead to much bigger ideas, until a space is alive. First, this book is meant to help you see what those areas can be, and give them shape outside of your imagination—to help you make your wildest ideas tangible and tactile. Second, this book is a guide to trends. Deeper inside, there are styles, finishes and functions that are at the forefront of modern design. Here, they’re exemplified in several of our products. You’ll see how many of them bridge the gap across several design styles. And how a few of our products can start the thinking process in many different ways. And yet, it blends in with seamless

intrigue. It’s a faucet with a hose that

has been left purposefully exposed.

Beyond offering a fresh take on a

pull-down kitchen centerpiece, and

a way to introduce new fascination,

consider what else is in play: the

visible hose that contrasts a brighter

finish. The sense of airiness created

through a use of negative space. And

the form freed of standard edges,

which leaves lighter, more exquisite

proportions in its place.

Now you see it.

Your high school geometry classes really

are paying off. Angles, intersecting lines

and geometric patterns have surged

forward in modern design. From the

entire architecture of buildings and

Escher-esque staircases, to backsplash

shapes are being pieced together in

dozens of new and remodeled spaces.

Mixing patterns can create a soft,

comfortable noise that not only makes

a room more fun—but makes it

one-of-a-kind.

As a society, we’re becoming

increasingly aware of our own

wellness. It means unplugging and

focusing on ourselves. Trips to

luxurious spas and salons accomplish

this, but many want to bring these

amenities into the comfort of their

homes. The shower is the most natural

place in the home to achieve this,

with indulgent, soaking shower

experiences that de-stress and relax.

Let luxury rain.

An intimate look inside a designer’s process—from start to finish.

t’s remarkable how simple it all looks for certain designers. There are a select few, in fact, who make the creation of beautiful, inspired spaces seem as

effortless as turning on a faucet. But it pays to look closer. As we were fortunate enough to discover in speaking to celebrated designer Brian Patrick Flynn—there’s a true process behind every professionally conceived room. As the mind behind the design of the HGTV® Dream Home since 2016, Brian’s gorgeous blends of textures, finishes and other elements have brought completely unique aesthetics to his projects, and have helped make him a well-known name in the design community. In the HGTV Dream Home 2018, Brian combined new looks, like matte black finishes, with sharp new designs—including the new Delta® Pivotal™ bath faucet. But these new looks didn’t come without their own set of challenges. We asked Brian to take us behind the scenes of his own creative process, the different way he looks at things and the lengths that he’ll go to find inspiration.

Is there an obvious first step in your design process? My first step is to take cues from the architecture of the home on the initial scout. That’s seeing the house, taking in the history of the architecture and also where it’s headed—whether it’s going to be modernized, or brought back to its original look.

Once that’s decided on, it’s really about how current I want to go with the design and the decorating. Do I want to stick with finishes and styles that would’ve been in this house when it was originally built? Or do I want to take cues from the overall style and add something that’s much more up-to-date?

That’s where it starts. From there, I try to think about things that people may not have seen yet. For example, black finishes have always been a thing—but it’s usually glossy black. Right now, matte and flat black are new, and not everyone knows about them. That’s really where the creative process comes in.

What’s the most difficult design hurdle to overcome?Since I’m the designer of the HGTV Dream Home 2018 and not the builder or architect, all I have to go on at the start are flat renderings or drawings that are on a piece of paper. It’s much different when you walk through the house after it’s been completely torn apart and reframed, and you see the experiential side of it. What’s the first thing you see from this vantage point? How well does that thing play with the light coming in from the window? What kind of silhouette does this create at 6:30 in the morning or 7:30 in the evening?

The biggest challenge is putting together a design for a house before it really exists. It’s putting together a very cohesive look from room to room, from paper first. It starts to get a little easier after the bathrooms are framed and the tile is up and the vanities are going into place. If I have to make any creative tweaks or changes, that’s usually when I’d do that. An idea is just an idea until you can walk through the space. It’s always good to have a backup option or two.

“I try to think about things that people may have not

seen yet.”

Are there any out-of-the-box tactics you use to create concepts? I try to curate a room with a mix of five elements. I need something metallic; something that is soft, like a textile; something that is stone; I usually want something that is glass or reflective; and something that is textural and knobby—like a reclaimed object. All of those elements together create a room. I try to think about how every single element in that room is going to complement the others.

Let’s say I’m doing a minimalist bathroom and I really want the shower and tub fixtures to be the stars. If I decide I want those fixtures to be something glossy—like polished chrome—that will probably be my only very polished, reflective element in the room. The tile might be flat and chalky, the floor might be rustic, and the towels woven. I want every finish to work well with the others.

What would you most like to see a faucet company do? Innovations in water delivery. Until a few years ago, I don’t think it was an option for people to even think about how water was going to look and feel as it was coming out of the faucet. Now that it is, I really think about it before I make my final decisions. The way water cascades out of the faucet is an integral part of interacting with a faucet. In particular, open channels are usually my first choice right now.

There are so many faucet designs today. How do you approach selecting one for each kitchen and bath you design? I’m attracted to very unique shapes—especially ones that haven’t been seen before. There are three or four faucet shapes and styles that are very common. These days, people are starting to spend more money on hardscaping for their houses. They’re willing to spend more for something

unique, something that no one else on the block has. A variety of different shapes can help us make that happen.

What is one decorative object from childhood that you remember distinctly? My parents had this very iconic painting. It was a long-haired man, pushing his hair back into the wind. I thought it was actually my mom and dad’s—I thought they had it done, but I had no idea what the licensing of art was then.

As I think about it and what I do today, I realize that the painting was all blacks, and greys and green-greys. Now that I’m looking back at it, my most-used colors are black, charcoal and grey-green. Maybe having a favorite childhood object really can affect your design aesthetic.

When is a room finished? For me, it’s when the very last accessory is placed and elements of life come in. In a kitchen, it would be deciding exactly where the cutting board or pizza oven boards are going to lean up against the backsplash. Then, it’s what kind of greenery I’m going to use to bring life. Some designers may say they’re done when the paint is up or the fixtures are installed.

Another example: in a bathroom, it’s deciding the exact type of toothbrush that will go in the toothbrush holder. Or how the finish of the toothbrush holder will play with the finish of the faucet.

In short, it’s bringing in that very last thing, the last detail—whether it’s a branch cut from the yard or a house plant that just says, “someone who is alive lives here.”Top: The Pacific Northwest, seen in grand

array from the deck, provided design inspiration throughout the interior. Bottom: A Pivotal™ faucet in Matte Black brings a striking, modern angle to the terrace bathroom vanity.
