Financial Update Last Sunday

Easter Sunday undesignated offerings were $4,414. That's encouraging. Thank you!

The Facts

At Parish Council on Tuesday, April 22nd, the Treasurer reported an operating deficit of $32,642.50 for the end of the First Quarter 2014. (This does not include Deck the Hall income and/or expenses, which are in a good position for the current Phase III initiatives.)

We are almost $24,000 behind in undesignated offerings and the long winter has taken a huge bite out of our heating budgets. Our electricity expenses are also much higher than they would normally be for this time of year even though we budgeted for increased rates. Other income such as parking, hall rentals, and investment income are all doing well and in line with our budget.

The reality is that to avoid a deficit appeal at the end of the year, April to December undesignated offerings should average $24,680 per month / $5,695 per week. To the end of March we are averaging $3,260 per week.

There are plans for a Stewardship Committee meeting very soon to plan for the months ahead. If you have interest or ideas to contribute, please contact Jane Mills, Warden.

Atlantic Theological Conference June 22nd - 25th, 2014 Topic: The Meaning of Evil

This year's conference will take place at King's College here in Halifax. Conference speakers will include parishioners Victoria Goddard and Daniel Watson, among others. Victoria is currently living in Trinity House and serving as a sexton for the parish, having previously been a Teaching Fellow in the Foundation Year Programme at King's. Daniel is a long-time parishioner and member of our choir, who has recently completed an M.A. in Classics.

Brochures for the conference with a full list of speakers and topics are now available at the back of the church.

New Warden Announcement: Darren Dyck Last Tuesday evening, April 22nd, Parish Council accepted Mike West's resignation from the role of warden due to constraints of time and other commitments. Mike felt it was in the best interest of the parish to step down at this early stage in his tenure. In accordance with Canon 35, para. 10, Parish Council has filled this vacancy by electing Darren Dyck to serve out the balance of the year until the next AGM, as our third warden. We are grateful to Darren for filling this role at this time.

The Lessons appointed for the Daily Offices for this week are found on pages xxvi and xxvii of the Book of Common Prayer.

100 in 1 Day Halifax What if hundreds of citizens united, each putting into place the changes and projects they would like to see in their community? This is what will be taking place on June 7th across the HRM. Individuals, groups and organizations will be staging small acts or 'interventions' that will make our city a better place to live. This is all part of 100in1Day Halifax: A festival celebrating citizen-driven action. There will be events such as community picnics and clothing swaps, outdoor yoga, and guided hikes. No intervention is too small!

To find out more about 100in1Day Halifax and to brainstorm your own intervention (or be part of another), join us on May 13th, at the Bloomfield Centre, 6:15-8:15pm, or check out our website www.100in1day.ca

The Re-enchantment of the World: fantasy, the imagination, and Christian life Perhaps the most popular Christian apologist of the twentieth century is C.S. Lewis. In a talk to be given at 7 pm on May 7th at the church hall, Victoria Goddard will discuss some thoughts about why it is that C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, G.K. Chesterton, and Dorothy L. Sayers (along with Charles Williams, Madeleine L'Engle and assorted others) have proven such durable writers of both fiction and theology. The nature of detective fiction as understood by Chesterton and Sayers, and fantasy for Lewis and Tolkien, suggests that this connection is not accidental. The current resurgence of the popularity of fantasy novels may be a cultural response to a spiritual void, much as the local food movement can be seen as a response to a similar void with regards to stewardship of the Earth and its resources.

Installation of new Bishop The Rt Rev’d Ronald W Cutler is pleased to invite you to his installation as sixteenth Bishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, on Tuesday, May 6th, 2014, at 7pm at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, 1330 Martello St in Halifax. Reception to follow in the Great Hall of the Anglican Diocesan Centre.

Soup Kitchen Update April 19th: Team 5, led by Alex Zachernuk (YN Director), filling in. 120 fed. Food by Feed NS.

Yesterday, April 26th: Team 6, led by Michael King and Michelle Gabriel. Food by Feed NS. Extra volunteers this week from the youth of Pictou County area churches, and a number of youth from the École du Sommet in Bedford.

This week, May 3rd: Team 1, led by Jim Rawding and John Krell, filling in for Maxine Miles. Food and help from Alpha Gamma Delta Alumnae.

Deck the Hall Plans The Deck the Hall Committee is pleased to report that work has begun on Phase 3, the installation of accessible washrooms in the old south kitchen. We hope to finish by summer. We also hope to complete three further phases by the end of spring 2015. These are to install a new furnace, to replace the eight large windows in the main hall and in the space beneath it, and to build a fine music room in that wonderful space.

We have about half the money to complete this exciting program. We are checking the estimates for all these phases and a fundraising campaign to parishioners will begin as soon as accurate figures are available. It will take place over the summer. Great generosity will be called for if we are to complete this ambitious plan.

The Deck the Hall project now has two committees, a Construction Committee consisting of Jane Mills (Warden), John Swaine, Jens Jensen, Anne West and John Mark Dawson, and a Fundraising Committee consisting of Gwynedd Pickett (Warden), Janet Ross, Martin Yeatman, Oriel MacLennan and Anne West.

Have you considered joining a Fellowship team? Each Sunday a group of volunteers coordinates the making of coffee and tea, and brings the nibblies that we enjoy after the Choral Holy Communion every week. Volunteers are organized into teams that operate on a rotating schedule, so that many hands can indeed make light work. If you would like to get involved with Fellowship, please contact Mary Hills ([email protected])

Thank you As we emerge from a prayerful Holy Week and a glorious Easter Sunday, let us thank everyone who worked behind (or before) the scenes to ensure that everything went well. We especially thank

Jim Rawding and John Krell, who take such good care of the church building, and make sure it is in good shape for our services

The counters, for their dedications to safely depositing our monetary offerings, even on the busiest of weeks

Tracy Lenfesty, Cathy Larsson, Vaila Mowat, and all members of the Altar Guild for their extra care and duties during this busy season, and extra thanks to those who came to help out at the cleaning party on Holy Saturday

Alex Easton, Craig Savoury, Scott Connors, and all the servers, for their attention to detail and dedicated presence.

John Swaine and Sue Zinck, for their stunning work on the altar flowers for Easter Day

Our Sextons, Patris Zotaj and Victoria Goddard, who, along with Craig Savoury, kept an eye on our alarm systems during our schedule changes

Jeffrey Reed, for sorting out our heating schedule for the week

Susan Harris, our Chair of Spiritual Development, who coordinated so many essential details behind the scenes

Our lay preachers, Drs Victoria Goddard and John Baxter, for speaking to us with insight and thoughtfulness

Garth MacPhee, our fearless Director of Music, and his choir and instrumentalists, for their unflagging poise and commitment to the extra rehearsals and services of this season

Fr Jim McCorriston, for his preaching, his faithful service at the altar, and for helping to shoulder the Holy Week schedule for

Fr Jim Purchase, to whom we owe our thanks many times over. Holy Week at St George’s is no small feat, and he was wonderfully gracious under that pressure. Thank you, Fr Jim!

This certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, so please know that we are grateful for all the contributions each parishioner has made to ensure that our Holy Week and Easter services led us with humble hearts and glorified God.
