‘AMID THE HILLS AND VALLEYS’ > Gleeson Day 2016

On Friday 30 September, the last day of Term 3, we will celebrate our College and our patron, Archbishop James Gleeson.

Our inaugural Yearbook in 1989 was dedicated to Emeritus Archbishop of Adelaide, James Gleeson, after whom the College is named. In it, Archbishop Gleeson writes a letter to the community which outlines his hopes and dreams for the College.

There is so much in this letter that speaks to us today but I would like to highlight one perfect example:

“In the pleasant setting of your College amid hills and valleys, you are surrounded

by so much beauty. Through the life of your

College, I am sure you will be inspired and will also

inspire the other school communities of your combined Campus and the wider community with a deep appreciation

of the beauty of God’s creation and tis meaning in our lives.”

I am struck by the congruence of this sentiment with the recent encyclical by Pope Francis on Ecology and Climate, ‘Laudato Si’. Our Staff Retreat this term focused on this important work of our

Pope and we have brainstormed and started planning the ways in which we can honour and care for our ‘common home’ through all that we do at Gleeson College. As we begin this important work we are well served to look back at our patron for inspiration to really engage with this ecological conversion.

So as we prepare to celebrate Gleeson Day this year, let us remember the wisdom of our patron, the shoulders we stand on and how lucky we are to be amid these beautiful hills and valleys.

Year 12 Trial ExamsTrial Exams and workshops were held this week for our Year 12 students. This can be a stressful time as the results of these ‘first trial’ exams can often be a little disappointing to students. It is important that they realise these exams are experiential; designed to give them a true sense of sitting for a three-hour paper and learning something about the techniques and skills involved in achieving the best results. It is hoped that an outcome of Trial Exam week is a renewed motivation for the final effort leading up to the conclusion of this very important phase of education.

Year 12 Term 3 Holiday BreakAt this stage, many of our Year 12 students are planning their Term 3 holiday break around the various workshops and trial exams which have been organised by Year 12 teaching staff. Each student

has received a program of events held at the College over the break. Some students will attend commercially-run revision seminars and these can be very productive and useful too.

It is fantastic to hear and see the enthusiasm that many of our students have at this stage of the year as they approach the final hurdles of Year 12. The students have been reminded though, they should have some ‘down time’ during these holidays to recharge and prepare for the final few weeks of Term 4 lessons and examinations.

Report Writing and PTNStaff are currently in the process of entering Term 3 grades into iScholaris. The Years 8 to 11 Parent/Student/Teacher Interview Night will be held early next term with notification regarding the process to be emailed next week.

God bless,

Mr J Corbo,Deputy Principal

FOUR GC FOOTBALLERS & COACH SELECTED IN TWILIGHT ALL STARS TEAM!

On the coat-tails of our Twilight Soccer League 2016 Premiership victory, the top 16 players in the league, as voted by coaches and referees each week, were selected in an inaugural TSL All Stars Team. This team took on the FFSA College of Sport Team, coached by Phil Stubbins, in a showdown clash at Elite Stadium last Wednesday night.

Gleeson College had four players chosen in the TSL All Stars Team, with Josef Shyti (GK), Ben Faulkner (Centre Back), Jack Ward (Striker) and Connor McLaughlin (Striker) all earning selection, along with our First XI Coach Travis Dodd, who was named as Coach of the side.

The College of Sport Team included footballers aged up to 23 years old, which allowed an excellent opportunity for the TSL All Stars youngsters to gain some great on-field experience against quality opposition. The game also gave our boys the chance to come together and play alongside class players from the other seven schools in the TSL in 2016.

Our Gleeson boys played well and in the spirit of the game, with all players given equal playing time to show their skills. Josef Shyti was the starting keeper and he played a phenomenal first half keeping the score tight at 2-1 trailing the College of Sport Team. The game continued to become more and more physical, however the overall fitness and consistency of play of the College of Sport squad, saw them over the line with quick succession in the second half taking the final score to 5-1. The TSL All Stars Team played exceptionally well against a team that has trained and played intensively together all winter season, and should be commended on their efforts on the pitch!

Congratulations to Josef, Ben, Jack and Connor on their selection in the 2016 TSL All Stars Team and to all the players involved this season. We also say a big thank you to Travis for his coaching, knowledge and professionalism he not only brought to our GC team, but to the TSL All Stars last week.

STAFF RETREAT 2016 > Connecting With Nature @ Adelaide Botanic Garden

With concerns about the environment, Gleeson College staff took the

opportunity at our annual Staff Retreat to immerse ourselves at the beautiful

Adelaide Botanic Garden!

The theme of the day ‘Ecological Conversion’, gave staff the oportunity to learn more about the connection we as humans have with our local

environment. Hosted by Mary Camilleri from the Catholic Education Office, staff moved their way through the gardens,

exploring and using their senses to engage with nature.

The day was closely linked with Pope Francis’ encyclical titled ‘Ladauto Si’,

which considers the importance of preserving the enivoronment and how it

is intertwined with the human race.

Our challenge now as a College is how can we be more ecologicallly friendly?

& Mission (APRIM)

Pedare P&F will be hosting a private screening of ‘Embrace’ in the Pedare

Chapel on Wednesday 26 October (7pm for 7.30pm start).

The director and body image activist, Taryn Brumfitt, will be making a guest appearance following the movie and Q&A time will prompt

general discussion with advice and messages from Taryn herself!

‘Embrace’ uncovers why poor body image has become a global epidemic, and what all women can do to have a brighter future. This film is currently

being shown nationally and will be released in the USA on September

19. It has received rave reviews for its content in promoting a positive body

image for women of all ages.
