What is Globalization? Is it the integration of economic,
political, and cultural systems across the globe?
Or is it Americanization and United States dominance of world affairs?
Is globalization a force for economic growth, prosperity, and democratic freedom?
Or is it a force for environmental devastation, exploitation of the developing world, and suppression of human rights?
Globalization is… a process of interaction and integration
among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology. This process has effects on the environment, on culture, on political systems, on economic development and prosperity, and on human physical well-being in societies around the world.

Who are the Players of Globalization
Globalization and the Church
Looking after the common good means making use of the new opportunities for the redistribution of wealth among the different areas of the planet, to the benefit of the underprivileged that until now have been excluded or cast to the sidelines of social and economic progress. “The challenge, in short, is to ensure a globalization in solidarity, a globalization without marginalization.” Compendium #363
Subsidiarity Still, that most weighty principle, which cannot be set
aside or changed, remains fixed and unshaken in social philosophy: Just as it is gravely wrong to take from individuals what they can accomplish by their own initiative and industry and give it to the community, so also it is an injustice and at the same time a grave evil and disturbance of right order to assign to a greater and higher association what lesser and subordinate organizations can do. For every social activity ought of its very nature to furnish help to the members of the body social, and never destroy and absorb them. Quadragesimo Anno, #79
Solidarity The solidarity which binds all men together as
members of a common family makes it impossible for wealthy nations to look with indifference upon the hunger, misery and poverty of other nations whose citizens are unable to enjoy even elementary human rights. The nations of the world are becoming more and more dependent on one another and it will not be possible to preserve a lasting peace so long as glaring economic and social imbalances persist. Mater et Magistra, #157

ACTIONS ON BEHALF OF JUSTICE Action on behalf of justice and participation in
the transformation of the world fully appear to us as a constitutive dimension of the preaching of the Gospel, or, in other words, of the Church's mission for the redemption of the human race and its liberation from every oppressive situation. - “Justice in the World” 1971 Synod of Bishops, #6
Using the Two Feet of justice handout, discuss in your small groups how you as a community can be a living community of compassion.
