120th Annual Flag Day Celebrated with PrideOn Saturday, May 21st, Glenwood Academy held its 120th Annual Flag Day Ceremony on campus . Flag Day is a centuries-old tradition honoring the academy’s rich history, students and community . The celebration began in Glenwood Academy’s Chapel where members of the graduating senior class each gave a poignant and moving speech about the impact Glenwood has had on their life and the lessons they will take into the future .

Following the service in the chapel, Glenwood students gathered with their platoons on the field to begin their military drills . Drills were judged on inspection points, drill points and overall scoring by guest judges Glenwood was proud to host who represented the United States Air Force, Navy, Army and Marine Corps .

With over 200 guests in attendance, students and staff were honored to spend the day with Glenwood Academy’s Board of Trustees; the Village of Glenwood’s Trustees; Glenwood’s Chief of Police, Demetrious Cook; and Glenwood’s Mayor, Ronald Gardiner, in addition to many longtime Glenwood Academy friends and family members .

Flag Day was filled with great celebration and reflection for all those involved . Mary Hollie, President and Chief Executive Officer, left the audience with a powerful quote: “While you celebrate today, take a moment to reflect on how fortunate we are to be here together, celebrating the success of all of our children and how fortunate we are to know a place where integrity, liberty, justice and humanity is called Glenwood .”

“Over these past six years, Glenwood has prepared me to become an unstoppable force with unwavering intelligence. Because of this, I now feel like I’m equipped to do anything and everything.” — Joshua, 2016 Senior Class

Glenwood Academy’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Ceremony took place on May 4th in the Burton Memorial Chapel . NJHS’s purpose is to recognize outstanding middle-level students and challenge their development through active involvement in school activities and community service . NJHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship .

Congratulations to Joshua B. (8th grade), Vondell E. (6th grade), Isabel L. (8th grade), Graison M. (6th grade), Jaedyn-Rai M. (7th grade) and Alondra P. (6th grade) for their personal accomplishments! These young men and women were the six of eleven eligible students selected and inducted into this school year’s National Junior Honor Society . A number of factors, including cumulative grade point average, determines eligibility . All of these students share Glenwood’s values and have maintained a GPA of 3 .25 or higher .

A special thanks to the teachers and staff who helped and participated in the ceremony .

A Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

As we reach the culmination of another school year, I can’t help but reflect upon the successes we’ve experienced this year . I’m excited to see our six graduating seniors move on from Glenwood to the next chapter of their lives . All of them are headed to college or the military, and all of our 8th graders are moving on to high school .

For those who have supported our students with your time, talents and treasures throughout the year, I hope you will share a moment of pride in these students as they prepare for their futures . We know they will continue to succeed with the values and lessons they’ve learned at Glenwood .

As the school year ends and summer begins, we are excited to be kicking off our summer programming . We will once again offer students the opportunity to participate in two 3-week sessions . Students will have the option to stay on campus and participate in our Summer Enrichment and Recreation Program or head up north and enjoy the beauty of Camp Getschow . Both provide our students with a unique opportunity to learn and grow while keeping them safe during the most vulnerable weeks of the year .

Finally, I’m pleased to share that we have forged a new partnership with Illiana Christian High School in Lansing . Along with our current relationships with Marian Catholic and Bloom High Schools, this partnership allows us to continue to provide our students with an exceptional secondary education that best meets their needs . Currently, we have eight students starting at Illiana, five freshman headed to Marian and two attending Bloom this fall . We look forward to watching their success over the next four years .

Although there is no typical student who enters Glenwood Academy, there is a typical student who leaves Glenwood Academy . These students are ones whose lives have been transformed by the support, care, tireless dedication and love given to them by people who believe in them . Their futures are bright and full of opportunity . Thank you for all you continue to do for our students .

Sincerely,

Mary H . Hollie, ACSW President & CEO

An Exciting, New Initiative: Glenwood’s Associate BoardPrivate receptions took place on May 3rd at The Chicago Club and May 9th at Glenwood Academy to introduce Glenwood Academy’s new Associate Board . Both receptions were well attended and received by many friends of Glenwood Academy .

The Associate Board was created to foster the development of future leaders and make lasting bonds for the students at Glenwood . Members of the Associate Board will strive to support Glenwood in a variety of ways that include generating financial and in-kind support, establishing themselves as ambassadors by promoting Glenwood’s mission in personal and professional capacities, and serving as mentors and leaders to the students of Glenwood Academy . Associate Board members have the unique opportunity to set the precedent for an important arm of Glenwood Academy moving forward .

There are many benefits to joining Glenwood Academy’s Associate Board . Members will have the opportunity to:

• Play a meaningful part in the work and mission of Glenwood Academy

• Directly impact the lives of hundreds of young people in our community

• Receive meaningful professional development • Gain leadership opportunities • Expand personal and professional networks • Socialize with like-minded individuals

Glenwood Academy is actively recruiting new members . Glenwood Students Make New Friends at BrookdaleBrookdale Senior Living of Olympia Fields and Glenwood Academy have recently forged an exciting partnership . Brookdale, an independent senior living community, serves nearly two hundred residents, many of whom have lived in the Glenwood area for years .

Executive Director Pattie Doyle had been searching for a local organization that would make a great partner for Brookdale for a long time, and realized Glenwood was a perfect match . This partnership will enable Brookdale seniors to get involved and share their time and talents with the Glenwood Academy community while doing the same for Glenwood students and honoring Glenwood’s tradition of teaching all students to give back to others as a means to become good citizens .

The Resident Council of Brookdale visited with Glenwood students on campus in April . Pattie shared how she “cannot put into words how much we all enjoyed visiting with the children and learning about Glenwood . It was a beautiful presentation and each resident remarked on the way home how they were so moved by the children they spoke to . The kids’ conversations and simple remarks touched all of us . They voiced enjoying having a grandparent to talk to, a mentor to

dream with…it brought tears to all of our eyes . I am so excited for the future and bringing these two worlds together .”

We echo Pattie’s sentiments and look forward to a wonderful partnership with Brookdale seniors!

Camp Getschow gives children the opportunity to develop or enhance their outdoor camping and recreational interests, experiences and abilities in a safe, fun and structured environment . Camp Getschow is located on 180 heavily-wooded acres on Blaisdell Lake in Loretta, Wisconsin, near the Chequamegon National Forest .

Camp Getschow teaches students skills in archery, sailing, canoeing, fishing, boating and swimming, and hosts evening activities that promote teamwork and sportsmanship . Students not only have the opportunity to improve their skills in these diverse areas, but demonstrate their mastery in culminating events at the end of each session . Campers receive various awards, trophies and recognitions for their efforts, improvements, sportsmanship and performance . Camp continues to be one of the most memorable and joyful experiences for Glenwood students .

Glenwood’s Summer Enrichment Program allows us to close the gaps in achievement for our elementary and middle school students by providing academic support during the summer months to help students retain and increase their achievement levels in math and reading comprehension . This year’s academic theme will be centered on animals and their habitats to promote vocabulary and background knowledge . Students will learn about animal species while developing reading, language, math and cognitive processing skills .

In addition to the academic component, our summer program also has a recreational component which includes special activity days, golf, swimming, weekly field trips and other engaging activities . Also, as introduced last year, counseling services will be incorporated into the programming through clinical groups . These therapeutic group sessions will take place once a week and focus on proactively addressing adjustment issues for new students, providing general coping skills for adolescents, and building positive self-esteem .

Glenwood Academy’s summer programming began on June 13th, with the first session running through July 1st and the second session running from July 11th to July 29th . Students have the opportunity to attend one or both sessions and can choose to participate in the Summer Enrichment and Recreation Program held on campus or attend Camp Getschow in northern Wisconsin .

Glenwood Academy In the News

On May 10th, Glenwood Academy joined thousands of other organizations across Chicagoland to host On the Table 2016, a region-wide initiative of the Chicago Community Trust that explores ways Glenwood and other local organizations can collaborate in order to make a stronger, safer and more dynamic community for all .

On the Table demonstrates the desire Chicago-area residents have to come together, collaborate and become more civically involved and committed to our community . We look forward to continuing our dialogue with those in the Southland Region .

We were delighted to celebrate National Volunteer Week with a special breakfast for our volunteers . Glenwood volunteers work all year long to serve our students in many capacities around campus, fulfilling a great need for our staff and students alike . From reading to students and tutoring them, to mentoring and providing expertise in a variety of areas—including in our maintenance and Kidshop departments—we are so grateful for their help! If you are interested in learning more about volunteering at Glenwood, please contact Rich Batterham at 708-756-5103 or [email protected].

NBC Chicago and LeeAnn Trotter recently highlighted Glenwood Academy and shared the Benitez-Mendoza family‘s story! Generous Thrall Family Scholarship Kicked Off in Style“The future’s so bright I gotta wear shades!” The Thrall family recently created a new scholarship at Glenwood to support students attending Marian Catholic High School . The scholarship provides financial support and educational opportunities for Glenwood students to have the ability for advancement in education .

The Lynn Thrall Academic Scholarship was created by the Thrall family to honor the memory of their mother, Lynn . Lynn was a mother of six children and a grandmother to fourteen, all of whom strongly believe in the power of education . Lynn’s

daughter Jan said, “these scholarships bring joy to our family and are a true testament to our mother’s legacy .”

Congrats to Horacio, Joshua, Rasheed, Rhashid and Tariq for receiving the inaugural Lynn Thrall Academic Scholarship! To celebrate the newly awarded recipients, a reception was hosted by the Thrall family for the students, their families, staff, Glenwood Trustees and friends . We are so grateful for the support and dedication of the Thrall family and their commitment to providing a superior education to Glenwood students .
