The Meritorious Achievement Ribbon was awarded to Cadet Petty Officer Third Class Rylan S. Butler.

The award is one of the highest that can be given to a cadet. Butler earned the ribbon for outstanding meritorious achievement while participating in a

Washington State Interscholastic Orienteering League (WIOL) Orienteering Meet with his NJROTC Team at the Lincoln Tree Farm in Spanaway in February.

While participating in the championship race, Cadet Butler went to investigate a call for help. Another racer, a female teenage student, was having a severe asthma attack. Butler stayed with

her, offered her some of his water, and tried calming her to reduce the attack. When he felt things had settled down he proceeded to walk her out of the forest and back to the starting line

- a distance of almost 1700 meters. Butler was met by medical attendants, who immediately began helping the young woman overcome her attack.  Cadet Butler then returned to his race and came upon another young female student that had severely twisted her ankle. Again, he

abandoned his race to help the runner back to the starting point. Though Cadet Butler was unable to complete his race, military officials say he demonstrated

exceptional leadership, physical and moral courage, and unselfish support by helping two injured runners receive essential medical assistance.

“Cadet Butler’s extraordinary commitment, prompt actions and personal sacrifice reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, his school, and the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.”
