Kate was also able to compete in the Loretta Lynn’s Area Qualifier in North Carolina, where she won the girls 12 to 16-years’ age group. She says beating the 20-strong field was, “pretty cool”.

young riders from all over the world attend the Millsaps Training Facility but for a female to be asked to attend is rare. Kate was one of only three girls at the facility.

Now that she is home, Kate is back on her training track and last weekend took out the Ashburton Wheels Week women’s race where she competed in the open race. her sights are set firmly on the New Zealand nationals in the North Island later this year.

Geraldine’s best mushroom dishes will be served and celebrated at the finale of the ukefest 2015 quest for special culinary genius. Recipes featuring the delectable fungi will go head-to-head and competition proceeds will go to the organisers of the event, Bellyful Geraldine.

The contest is a flourish to the festival’s primary sponsor, Meadow Mushrooms, and sustenance for the local branch of Bellyful, a national not-for-profit organisation providing meals to families with new babies or coping with illness.

Bellyful Geraldine branch co-ordinator Debbie Oliver explains, “The competition’s free to enter. Bellyful as a group will choose six finalists, then we’ll have the finals evening at The Country Café. Sam [former Country Café owner and guest chef] will be preparing the mushroom dishes and people will each have a tasting plate. Then, everyone present will take part in the judging. Prizes are tickets to the main ukefest acts – The Nukes and Formidable Vegetable Sound System – and some other goodies, a hamper, a cookbook and Country Café roasted coffee.”

While portobellos, buttons, shiitakes, etcetera, are at the occasion’s heart, “The $20 ticket price includes a donation to Bellyful, a drink and live ukulele music,” says Debbie.

Sara honeyman, co-owner and new operator of The Country Café, is delighted to be hosting the event. “It supports Bellyful, supports young mothers and should attract lots of different dishes - salads, quiches, risottos and different ways of stuffing, flavour combos, different ways of presenting...”

As Debbie says, “It’s different from your usual cooking competition.”

Mushrooms’ versatility and the contest’s left-field character aside, “they’re a very healthy food,” says Ros Burdon, Meadow Mushrooms shareholder. “They have no fat, no sugar, they’re light, and have lots of vitamin B and other good qualities and they have a lovely flavour. The competition will encourage people to make nice things out of mushrooms; it’s a great idea.”

ukefest co-director hugh McCafferty is pleased the competition combines so many interests and salutes Meadow Mushrooms’ backing. “It’s something that’ll create interest, and it honours the sponsors and supports the community. And it’ll be fun.”

After six years of serving drinks and yummy food in Café Plums, René and Corina Fellmann reckon they deserve a break. They have tossed off their aprons before packing their bags, and intend to do a spot of travelling before they decide on their next career path. “There is an old saying,” says René. “When the farmer sells his cows, he’s looking for a change.”

“Martina has finished university” says Corina. “Now it’s us time. We might have more time for bike rides and going for runs.” Corina is of course referring to their daughter, Martina, who is a promising young tri-athlete and has previously featured in The Geraldine News. Their first trip will be to see her graduate as a Bachelor of Optometry and Vision Science in Auckland, then watch her in the Rarotonga International Triathlon Festival. Their next port of call will be to visit some of the western states of America.

The café business has been sold to Mark and Gaylene McDonald and their chef son Jason who intend to carry on the same quality service.

“It’ll be business as usual,” says Mark, “although, we may look at extending the hours in the near future.”

The McDonalds are no strangers to Geraldine having lived here for three years in the late 1980s and Mark is a familiar face in the PGG Wrightson store as a grain and seed rep. Gaylene has worked in the hospitality trade before, with an eight-year stint at The Poplars on the Timaru-Pleasant Point

highway.“We have been looking for a business like this for a while,”

says Mark. “Jason has been cheffing for 13 years, working long hours for little gain. So we thought it was about time he worked for himself.”

Jason is already a resident in Geraldine while Mark and Gaylene are trying to sell their house in Timaru so they can move here.

“I love it here,” says Jason. “The locals are all very friendly and I’m looking forward to providing the same quality food the Fellmanns are renowned for.”

So, is René passing on the secret to good chocolate making?

“It’s no secret,” says René. “It’s all about quality ingredients and freshness, which means small batches and a lot of hard work.” The Fellmanns owned Chocolate Fellmann for seven years and René said it wasn’t uncommon for him to work 80 to 100 hours a week to fill the orders they had for their chocolates. he has taught his trade in polytechnics in hamilton and Timaru and several cooking schools, and is happy to pass on his knowledge.

“René’s a brilliant pâtisserie chef,” says Jason. “I have studied it before, but I’m learning a lot from him.”

The Fellmanns are very grateful for the loyalty of their customers over the years and hope that support will continue for the McDonalds.

mP says domestic tourism growth great

for geraldineA significant increase in the number of New Zealanders

visiting the region plays into the hands of Geraldine businesses, according to Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean.

Guest nights for domestic travellers in the Timaru Regional Tourism Organisation Area, which includes Geraldine, are up 23 percent for the year to March. Figures specifically relating to Geraldine are not gathered.

Mrs Dean, the Parliamentary Private Secretary for Tourism, says growth of this scale is significant.

“The emergence of South Canterbury as a favoured destination for domestic travellers is great news for Geraldine in particular. The town has long been a popular pit stop for international visitors, but having more domestic visitors pulling up will bring long- term benefits.

“A vibrant domestic tourism industry can generate visitor spending in slower months. The increased likelihood of domestic travellers staying overnight also provides trade for the hospitality industry.

“Geraldine is already doing great things to appeal to New Zealanders. There are attractions and activities that appeal to a wide range of people throughout the seasons and I have spoken with many who make a beeline for events like the Summer Fete and Arts and Plants Festival. The Go Geraldine organisation is forward-thinking and ideally placed to feed off this increase in domestic travel. Capitalising on this surge in interest will provide a stronger economy as the town will be better equipped to withstand fluctuations in international demand.”

Nationally, for the year ended March 2015, guest nights for domestic travellers increased 6.3 percent.

Solitaire is a young-adult novel about a girl called Tori and her hatred of high school.

To start with the novel’s eye-catching cover claims to not include lovey-dovey stuff – which would be so refreshing – and is strictly described as “not a love story”. I thought this whole concept was dumb as 10 pages in, there is mention of Tori meeting the new boy, Michael holden, and the line “And this, I suppose, is it. This is probably how it starts.” In teen novels, these types of statements are warning signs of a sappy romance; which this kind of is, however the main theme of the novel is not love.

It’s depression. Tori’s depression is described in a modern way that I loved.

It’s up-to-date and may be hard for adults to understand, however for teens the inability to open up to anyone, blog addiction, difficult relationships and staying up too late watching movies may seem all too familiar. These are Tori’s unhealthy habits that accompany her depression.

The other part I liked in a frustrating, realistic way is that the ending wasn’t a big epiphany moment of how she was going to get better, it was more like a decision; a decision that she was enjoying the moment she was in and that was ok, and she was ok.

And then, there’s the whole reason behind the novel’s name, which is a bit of added mystery, thrown in for excitement in order to balance out Tori’s pessimistic moanings about her awkward social interactions. Solitaire is a movement created by a group of students who stage little pranks or acts of rebellion, however that all goes a bit too far in the end. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, though. you’ve also got to give props to Alice Oseman, who wrote this successful novel when 17 years old and had it published when she was 19. She has written a second novel, Radio Silence, and has been compared to fellow authors John Green and Rainbow Rowell.

Not only is Solitaire thoroughly honest but it’s also a modern take on a teen’s depression. Not only teens should read it, but adults should as well, for a better, updated idea of what depression is like for adolescents these days.

neWs in brief

Garden Retreat Designs might be Geraldine’s newest business at just one month old. however, director Rebecca young brings formal landscape qualifications, commercial experience and garden management to her fledgling company.

Creative from an early age, Rebecca initially studied fashion design as a school leaver. however, she felt the fashion industry didn’t suit her personality and it has only been recently that the forty-year-old from Orari has formalised her passion for working outside and in gardens with a Certificate in Landscape Design.

“When I started studying I was nervous. I hadn’t studied since school. I was apprehensive about fitting in family and study.”

It didn’t take long for Rebecca’s confidence to grow as her results began to reinforce the knowledge she had gained while working at a native plant nursery in Dunedin and helping to manage a large established garden in Timaru.

Rebecca is keen to “create a beautiful, calm, peaceful place for people in their gardens because life can be stressful and it’s nice to come home to a beautiful, peaceful place”. To this end, she offers a comprehensive service from a free initial consultation to concepts, designs and detailed plans.

Rebecca says she will “rise to the challenge of any garden”, including tight budgets and recycling landscaping materials. “Winter is a really good time to get your garden landscaped because the plants are all ready to grow for spring.”

While Rebecca’s business focuses on landscape design, she will also support clients to achieve their desired outcome by arranging contractors to turn the vision into reality. Whereever possible, Rebecca aims to use local businesses to construct her plans. This includes an annual maintenance programme

when Rebecca will take care of the “big picture” to ensure gardens maintains their design focus.

Alongside her husband Karl and sons Caleb (9) and Josh (7), Rebecca is excited about her future and the challenges she embraced when she made the decision to upskill as a mature student. “Any mum out there is capable of studying. They may be worried about whether they can do it but they can. If you put your mind to it, you can and better your life. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Double success for Paddon in Rally Otago

hayden Paddon tells The Geraldine News about his latest success.

“We had an amazing weekend in Dunedin at Rally Otago. I enjoyed every minute of driving the classic BDA. It was also an added bonus to not only win the classic rally, but to win the outright national championship rally ahead of the 4WD cars by a mere two seconds. huge thanks must go out to Tony Gosling for letting me drive his car again and our team who did an amazing job with both the preparation and work on-event.”

hayden says he was amazed by the numbers of spectators supporting the rally.

“It’s the most I’ve ever seen in a New Zealand national championship round. Rallying is obviously in very good shape – big fields of modern and classic cars, heaps of fans and the best roads in the world. It all sounds to me like a good recipe for the return of Rally New Zealand.”

hayden was allowed to compete in Rally Otago even though it was not part of his official programme with his team, hyundai Motorsport.

“The car and the event were quite different to what we have coming up but a result’s a result and this helps to build some confidence as we head back to europe.”

hayden was heading for testing in Poland before his next event, Rally Portugal.
