Volume 3, Issue 5 May 2015

From the Captain

Men,

I attended the Nathan Bedford Forrest monument rededication in Selma

on May 23 supporting Captain Pat McMurray in Alabama. This was an

outstanding event supported by about 150 - 200 people from many

States. Just in the Mechanized Cavalry we had 5 States supported to

see this Great War Hero honored in the dedication of a monument

commemorating his Battles supporting the Cause. The ceremony was

held at Old Oak Cemetery in Selma, which is also listed as a historic site

on the national register. While there some had a chance to go on a

guided tour of the cemetery. Some of you may have heard about the

battle over Confederate Circle in the cemetery where the Monument to

the Unknown Confederate dead is buried. The UDC has won that battle and has been given the

deed to Confederate Circle which is a little over and acre in the middle of the cemetery. Since then

they have established a presence in fixing up cannon displays and replacing the bust of Forrest

that was stolen last year. It is now a beautiful place honoring our Confederate heritage.

We have been discussing for some time and it was mentioned at the last quarterly in Forsyth by

several that we wanted to have a Georgia annual event for the Mechanized Cavalry. I have started

planning the event for August 28-29th rain or shine at Hidden Hollow in Trenton Georgia. I visited

this location and they can provide lodging for the majority of our Troops. They have also added on

a grand pavilion area that provides a very large indoor area for eating and socializing. There is

overflow lodging available also close at local hotels. This was the location of the 2012 Georgia

annual and a good place to start our annual events. I will be planning one every year in the

July/August timeframe if supported. So let me know of other places you might have in mind that

can support the Georgia Mechanized Cavalry. We are committed, have paid our depost and on the

schedule for Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th of August with everyone departing on Sunday

morning the 30th. I will be relying on the men that live close to the event to assist me set things up

as we get closer. I am also asking for support from all of the Troop Lts. to make this annual event

a success. I will be sending something out soon for registration, cost and available lodging. Troop

1 Lt. Denny and Larry Wheeler meet me and toured Hidden Hollow facilities with me. We also got

a price from another local facility that was almost twice the cost of Hidden Hollow. Will discuss

more at the June 28th Quarterly meeting.

As noted above we will have our next Quarterly meeting on Sunday June 28th at 12 noon in Villa

Rica at the Old Wicks Tavern. Thanks to Jerry Vogler who has made the arrangements with the

Board of Trustees for us to use the building. At the meeting we will discuss the options and

arangements for the Annual in Trenton.

The 18th Mechanized Cavalry annual is coming up soon on the first week in June, 3rd through the

6th. It is in Marble Falls Arkansas this year and promises to be a great event. If you haven’t

already done so you need to send in your registration, it will help them out a lot in planning food

and events. I will be riding up on Wednesday morning for a 6:00 pm officers meeting that

afternoon. For me it’s around 740 miles and about a 12 hour ride so I will be leaving Perry Ga.

around 4:00 am Wednesday morning. My planned route is below. Those the Atlanta area wanting

to meet up and ride up with me, meet me on I20 exit 26 Villa Rica around 6:00am at the Hess gas

station on the left and for those in the Birmingham area meet me at I 22/Hwy78 exit 65 around

8:15 at the Loves Travel Stop gas station. I plan on riding straight through with a stop for lunch in

the Memphis area off Hwy 78. If you plan on meeting me at one of these two locations text me at

478-951-2628 so I will be looking for you. Next year the annual is in Cedar Key Florida so start

making plans in your schedule and budget to attend, it will be here before you know it.

Communications Officer Compatriots, Once again, we have put another busy month behind us. Re-enactments, memorial services, dedications, and paying our respects to those who have sacrificed for our freedom. Now it is time to gear up for our reunions, annuals, and family vacations. Please forward the “Charge” when you are out and about this summer. Now more than ever, we must remain vigilant and remember our goals. Although, our memorial services have come and gone, take time to keep a veterans grave in proper order. Summer is a great time to get children involved, and an excellent way to build community service hours for students, scouts, etc. Summer months always bring local fairs and festivals. These events are perfect for setting up recruiting booths. If you are planning an event or participating in one, please pass it on for the calendar. Like myself, I know everyone has been busy, but as a whole we are falling off track in our communication efforts. Make sure your camp events, troop events, and any local historical or family events are getting added to the calendar. I am also looking for more participation with the website. We still have many members that have not registered since the February upgrade. The Ga Mechanized Cavalry website address is: http://www.gascvmc.org. Go to the member “login/registration” page to get started. Have a great Dixie Day! Capt. Bo

Troop 2

Troop 2 attended a “Walk Through History” event the first weekend in May. This event was set up and planned by Grady Vickory. It was an I opening event in the one on one tour that was provided by Mr. Pope, the property owner. The land has been passed down through his family so there are stories and facts on what happened that you can’t get anywhere else. David Myers “Cowboy” sent in the pictures below showing some of the sites and historic locations.

The same day as the Battle of Byron, Troop 3 also supported the Old Clinton Wars Days event. This is an annual event that last two days. This year the weather was perfect for sharing our Heritage with others. It was supported by several Troop 3 members throughout the weekend.
