What is the Incredible Years (IY)?
• The Incredible Years is a series of
interlocking evidence
based programmes
• Developed to prevent/treat Social Emotional and Behavioural Issues with Children
• Parent, Child, Teacher
Why use Incredible Years? Why intervene early?
• Clonmel, Tipperary Study (2005) indicated that EBD amongst children stood at 17.5%
• Amongst disadvantaged communities this figure can rise to 28% (Martin, Carr, Carol, Byrne 2005)
• Prevents problems from becoming entrenched
• Reduce future risk
• Prevent children being separated
• Problems are easier solved
• Value for Money

20 trained Parent Programme Group Leaders
Over 40 school-based staff trained to deliver Small Group Dina and Classroom Dina
320 school personnel received full training in Teacher Classroom Management
Almost 50 14 week Parent Programmes delivered
Almost 500 parents graduated from the programme
2 Group Leaders accredited by Incredible Years / Carolyn Webster-Stratton / more to follow
Recognition by Minister for Children & Youth Affairs in June 2011 of work being done
Featured on RTE’s Nationwide programme (2009) as an area of good practice in the field
Hosted Incredible Years Ireland Forum’s in 2009 and 2011

What issues will the programme address?
3rd highest proportion of children living in lone parent households in the State (CSO 2011)
Highest rate of Teen Births in the State at 9 per 1,000 (CSO 2011)
Only 65.7% of newborn babies visited by Public Health Nurse within 48 hours discharge from hospital – State average 83.6% (HSE 2011)
5th highest proportion of babies born with a low birth weight (HSE 2011)
3rd highest proportion of children whose mothers had only primary or no formal education in the state(CSO 2006)
The Genesis Programme
Vision: To measurably improve the
well-being and developmental outcomes for children aged pre-birth to six years in the targeted areas by implementing the Incredible Years suite of programmes with fidelity using an agreed area based approach
