Introduction

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like

a tree without roots” - Marcus Garvey.

After reading through “Pedigrees of the House of Cromwell” compiled by my

late cousin Leslie Cromwell, I became intrigued by all the intricate and

mysterious questions posed by genealogy. His chart only included one line of

ancestry, stretching back to the twelfth century. I began to wonder whether

some of the individuals in his chart could be traced back in different ways. I

assumed that by looking back via different parents I could eventually

discover links to different people, and even different countries. I set to work

with my research, using the internet, books and all of the pedigrees compiled

by my cousin. After several weeks of research, I discovered that my

assumption was correct! I have presented not only my research in this book,

but also all of Leslie Cromwell’s information, making a comprehensive book,

with the aim to educate others on our family heritage.

In the first section, I have included various pieces of introductory material,

including a brief history of my ancestors and a guide to the Cromwell coat of

arms. In the following section is the family tree, divided into small chunks,

and information about my ancestors. Section 3 holds several appendices,

including birth maps, a kinship report and trees from other books, while

Section 4 contains a glossary, index and bibliography, without which no book

would be complete.

A Brief History of my Ancestors

My journey into the past began using Leslie’s tree as a foundation. His tree

showed ancestors going back around 6 generations through various grandparents, and also

showed one more line going back to an individual named Haldene, whom we will see on page

25. Altogether, his genealogical record spanned 900 years. He himself completed all the

research relating to more recent ancestors, but the line back to Haldene had been found by a

Victorian genealogist.

I now proceeded not by attempting to find Haldene's ancestors, but instead

trying to find ancestors of people in between, specifically those of noble blood. Once I could

find an ancestor with noble blood, finding out their ancestors would be considerably easier. I

first started with the obvious people: The spouses of the Lords Ralph de Cromwell 1st up to the

7th. None of these spouses were recorded in Leslie’s pedigrees, so I conducted research –

mainly using the internet – into who they were. I eventually found out at least the first names of

5 of the 7’s wives. One of these wives – Margaret de Somery (Spouse of the fourth Ralph de

Cromwell) had ancestors of nobility, so I could trace her back. Margaret’s mother was

descended from the Earls of Arundel. They in turn were descended from the St. Sauveur

family (and eventually the Vikings) through one branch and, through an individual named

Maud Bigod, were also descended from the Merovingians and Charlemagne. I discovered that

that Meroveus of the Franks was probably (although not definitely) descended from the Fisher-

Kings. They supposedly held the Holy Grail, and were either descended from Jesus Christ or

his brother, James. I have shown James as their ancestor as it seems most likely from the

pseudonym of his son “Rama-Theo”, which probably meant “Crown Prince”. From Jesus, I

used the bible to trace my ancestors back to Abraham, Solomon and David, and Moses. I have

supposed that Joseph was the blood father of James.

The next individual whose ancestors I could trace further was the husband of

Katherine Cromwell (The sister of Thomas Cromwell of Essex). His father was descended

from several lords in Wales. His mother, however, was more interesting. It appears that she

was an illegitimate daughter of Jasper Tudor, the uncle of Henry VII. Even though she was

illegitimate, this still means that I share a blood relationship with Jasper Tudor’s ancestors. I

could trace the ancestors of Jasper back through Dukes of Bavaria and Kings of England and

France (Including Henry I, Henry II and William I of Normandy). I then traced the ancestry of

Matilda of Scotland, who was the wife of Henry I, back through her Scottish predecessors to

the Celtic Kings of Britain. From there I could trace my ancestors back to the Romans. I also

managed to find out the names of several spouses that weren’t already in Leslie’s tree.

Once I had researched these individuals, I proceeded to construct a family

database using the Times Family Tree Maker 2005. A condensed version of this database can

be found at www.genealogy.com/users/b/a/t/Owain-Bates/TREE/0001tree.html. After constructing

this database and adding as much detail as I could, I made this booklet, to inform others of my

findings.

The Origin of the Name “Cromwell”

The Heraldry of the Cromwell Coat of Arms

“Cromwell” is a locational surname and originates from a small

village in the county of Nottinghamshire, where the original lord of

the manor, Ralph de Cromwell was first recorded in 1177. The

place name translates as "the winding stream" from the pre 7th

century Old English crumb-waella.

On the left is the generally accepted

Cromwell Coat of Arms. There are

several variations of it, but the main

shield is nearly always per chief gules

and or with a bend azure in blazoning.

This is the crest of the

Commonwealth. We can see the

resemblance with the crest above in

the helmet on top of the shield. It has

the flags of the United Kingdom and

a lion rampant over all. The motto

below means “Peace is sought by

war”.

This is the banner of Oliver

Cromwell. OP most probably

stands for “Oliver Protector”.

An Extract From The Original Preface to “Pedigrees of

the House of Cromwell” by Lt. Colonel Leslie Cromwell

“One by one the ancient houses are entombed in the urns and

sepulchres of mortality and their counties know them no more. But

they have their share in that story of England which is part of he

inheritance for ever”. – Round

There is something very intimate which comes to most of us by

birth. We inherit traditions and unless we are conscious of it, we

cannot take up this inheritance. And if we know our race, if we know of

its blood, the power of tradition is intensified. If we know our pedigree

there clings an atmosphere and it counts for much in the formation of

our character and of our morality. Good circumstances foster good

elements already present in the family character.

The maintenance of tradition is no mere vanity; it is the duty

imposed upon us by descent, and even the externals of progress

cannot change the spirit that is the growth of generations. Of blood is

something more than a figure of speech; it signifies the cumulative

inheritance of traditions till they become akin to instincts. Our past

ancestors still continue their influence, our instinct is the fruit of their

experiences, and our views are the outcome of their thought.

At the conclusion of the second world war 1939-45 I decided to

carry out a research into the genealogy off the Cromwell family with

the object of:

•Ascertaining whether our branch of the family was descended from

Oliver Cromwell, the lord protector and

•Establishing a genealogical tree so that future generations of our

family might know something of their ancestors and may, I hope,

continue the pedigree “ad infintium”.

Borlasc so rightly said “ the most lasting houses have their

seasons, more or less, of a constitutional strength; they have their

spring, and summer sunshine glare, their wane, decline and death”.

Chapter 1: My recent ancestry

This chapter covers my direct ancestry in more recent times, only

occasionally going back as far as the 17th Century.

Every individual below Eustace and Ruth is currently alive, with my parents and I

living in London, and the remainder having branched out from Cambridge. In the

following few pages I will show the ancestry of Eustace (or Harry) Bates. I will also

show more recent ancestors of Reginald Cromwell.

Chapter 1: My recent ancestry

Ancestors of Eustace Harry Bates

The tree on the left shows

how far back as I am able

to trace the ancestors of

Eustace’s father, Charles.

William Bates is the

furthest back ancestor

holding the name of

“Bates” that I can trace my

ancestry to. He was born

in the late 18th Century.

I will divide the ancestors of Eustace into three

trees: Charles Bates’ ancestors, Sarah Stone’s

ancestors and Joseph Mann’s ancestors.

The tree on the

right shows the

ancestors of

Eustace’s

mother’s father,

Sarah Stone.

13

These two trees show the ancestors of Joseph Mann,

who appears along with his father’s ancestors in the

first tree.

His mother, Mary Salt’s, ancestors appear in the

small tree to the bottom right.

In this tree we can see seven generations of William

Manns! The first was probably born circa 1665, and

would have been alive at the time of The Great Fire of

London.

I have found out very little about Mary Salt’s family, so

I am only able to show her parents.

most recent ancestors of

Reginald Cromwell.

At the top (right) we can

see his father, Benjamin

Cromwell’s ancestors,

and at the bottom we

can see him and his

mother’s ancestors.

Below is a small tree

showing all Benjamin’s

children who lived past

childhood. He had six!

Oliver Cromwell (NOT

the Lord Protector) is the

oldest individual on this

tree, born in Bath during

the early 18th Century.

His ancestors will be

shown in the following

chapters.

Chapter 2: Ancestry of Oliver Cromwell (1727-1770)

This chapter covers one direct line of ancestry, going from Oliver Cromwell

(1727 – 1770) back to Morgan Williams and Katherine Cromwell (Late 15th

Century).

The ancestors of Morgan William’s parents will be shown in following chapters,

with Katherine Cromwell’s ancestors being shown from chapter 8 onwards.

Walter Cromwell (Died 1544) should

have been called “Williams”, but

changed his name back to Cromwell

because his uncle, Thomas Cromwell,

was important in the court of Henry VIII.

Richard Williams

was the Great-

Grandfather of Lord

Protector Oliver

Cromwell. His son

took the name

Cromwell.

This chapter will show the ancestry of Morgan Williams, with links to The

House of Normandy, Scottish Kings, The House of Wessex, Celtic Kings and

Roman Emperors (In following chapters)

On this page we can see the ancestors of William Williams, the father of Morgan

Williams.

On the next page we will see ancestors of his mother, Joan Tudor.

Chapter 3: Ancestors of Morgan Williams

Ancestors of Joan Tudor

Joan Tudor was an illegitimate daughter of Jasper Tudor, brother of Edmund Tudor and

uncle of Henry VII. Her mother is unknown. Only her father’s ancestors will be shown.

Because of her descent from Catherine of Valois, Joan Tudor’s ancestry can be traced

through many European Royal Families. I have not included every traceable member, as

this would include over a thousand individuals. Many individuals on the next few pages

will have family trees that can be easily accessed online.

The ancestors of Henry I will be shown in the next

chapter: “Links to the house of Normandy”.

The ancestors of Matilda of Scotland will be shown

in the subsequent chapter: “Links to Scottish

Kings”.

Catherine of Valois originally

married King Henry V. Her father,

Charles VI, is also known as

“Charles the Mad”.

Owen Tudor is descended from the

Kings of Wales, and his ancestors

can be seen on page 41.

Chapter 5: Links to Scottish Kings

20

This chapter shows links from Matilda of Scotland (The wife of

Henry I) to Scottish Kings.

St. Margaret of England is a

descendant of Ethelred the

Unready, so can be traced

back to the early kings of

Wessex. I have included her

ancestry trees on page 43.

Her brother was Edgar the

Æthling (Or Atheling) who

was proclaimed king upon the

death of Harold Godwineson

at Hastings in 1066.

Chapter 6: Links to Celtic British Kings

This chapter highlights the link between our Scottish ancestors and Roman

ancestors through the Celts, and shows a link to Constantine the Great.

Caracatus of the

Catuvellaumi was the

son of Cymbeline and

brother of Tiberius

Claudius Cogidubnus

of the Regnenses.

Constantine the Great was

Roman Emperor from 306 to

337AD. He was the first Roman

Emperor to convert to Christianity.

Venissa’s ancestors

will be shown in the

next chapter.

23

Chapter 7: Links to Roman Emperors

This chapter shows how some of our Celtic ancestors were descended from

Roman Officials.

Tiberius (Caesar) Claudius Nero was Roman

Emperor from September 18th 14AD to

March 16th 37AD. He was the second

Roman Emperor, succeeding Augustus.

Appias Claudius Caecas served as consul twice, in 307 BC and 296

BC, and in 292 BC and 285 BC he was appointed Dictator. In 280 BC,

after he had gone blind, he gave a famous speech against Cineas, an

envoy of Pyrrhus of Epirus, declaring that Rome would never

surrender. This is the earliest known manuscript of a political speech in

Latin.

He also allowed sons of freedmen to serve in the Senate, and built the

“Aqua Appia”, an aqueduct in Rome and the “Via Appia”, a road

between Rome and Capua.

Chapter 8: Immediate Family of Katherine Cromwell

This chapter covers the

immediate family of Katherine

Cromwell (Born 1477)

Katherine had two siblings, one of

whom was Thomas Cromwell, Earl

of Essex. This family features in the

early chapters of Hilary Mantel’s

book “Wolf Hall.”

Thomas Cromwell’s daughter-in-law

was Elizabeth Seymour, who was

the sister of Jane Seymour (of Henry

VIII).

Robert Cromwell (Katherine’s great-

great-grandfather) was a

Lancastrian noble killed at the Battle

of Towton in 1461. His residence

(Cromwell House) was seized by Sir

Humphrey Bourchier upon his death.

Her earlier male ancestry will be

shown in the next chapter, with

branches from her grandmother

(Margaret de Somery) in the

subsequent chapters.

Chapter 9: Earlier Ancestors of Katherine Cromwell

via her Male Lineage NB. I do not know the parents of Haldene (or Haldane, Alden,

Haldan) for sure. Most sources either state that his mother

was unknown or was Adeliza of Louvain (or Lorraine). She

married twice (To Henry I and to William D’Aubingy). At the

time when nearly every source states that Haldene was born,

she would have been married to Henry. Any son of the king,

however, would have been more well documented , so

because Henry I had the most illegitimate children of any

English monarch, it is possible that he illegitimately fathered

Haldene whilst married to Adeliza.

This is as far back as I can

trace the lineage of Katherine

Cromwell through her male

ancestors.

Haldene de Cromwell was

the earliest ancestor shown

on Leslie Cromwell’s tree.

He stated that Haldene was

probably born c. 1066, but

using known birth dates, I

have worked out that all his

descendants would have

been over 55 when they

had children, which is not

impossible, but quite

improbable. I have used an

estimate from most other

sources for Haldene’s birth

date.

Margaret’s ancestors will be

shown in the next chapter.

Haldene was the earliest

person named Cromwell.

This would support the

idea that Haldene was

an illegitimate son of

Henry I, as he would not

have been able to take

the surname Normandy,

instead choosing a

locational one.

Chapter 10: Earlier Ancestors of Katherine

Cromwell via Margaret de Somery

This chapter shows the

ancestors of Margaret de

Somery.

The tree on the left shows her

immediate family. All individuals

to follow will be ancestors of

William D’Aubingy.

William D’Aubingy was the first Earl

of Arundel, which is now the highest

Earldom in England.

The link between the D’Aubingy

family and the St. Sauveur family is

not definite, but is highly probable.

The Viking ancestors of Richard St.

Sauveur will be shown in the next

chapter. The ancestors of Maud

Bigod will be shown in the

subsequent chapters.

Chapter 14: Fisher-King ancestors of Argotta

This chapter links our Frank ancestors to

our biblical ones, via the Fisher-Kings.

In Arthurian mythology, the Fisher-Kings were

the family that held the Holy Grail. In the myths,

they are not mentioned by name, but in

historical sources there is a family holding this

name whose members are named. This would

suggest that the Fisher-Kings were not purely

mythological, but did actually exist in the early

centuries AD. This family line is not certain, but

is the best that I have.

The biblical ancestors of Josue will be shown in

the next chapter.

Chapter 15: The immediate family of Jesus Christ

This chapter shows the immediate family of Jesus Christ, born around 0AD.

N.B. Due to software limitations, some birth dates in the following chapters may

be included in individuals’ name boxes rather than underneath.

It has been suggested that St.

James was Joseph of Arimathea

(who took Jesus’ body following

his crucifixion). This would make

sense, as the title "Arimathea" is

an English corruption of the

Graeco-Hebrew ha-Rama-Theo,

meaning "of the Divine Highness.

Since Jesus was supposedly a

King, then his younger brother

was the Crown Prince, or Rama-

Theo. In the Nazarene hierarchy,

the Crown Prince always held the

patriarchal title, in this case

"Joseph“.

James’ son also took the title

Rama-Theo

Anna’s (or St. Anne’s)

ancestry through the house

of Cohen will be shown in

the next chapter. St.

Joseph’s ancestors will be

shown in the subsequent

chapters.

All individuals in this chapter

and the subsequent three are

taken from biblical sources

and may not be accurate due

to the nature of the Bible. I

have tried to verify them

through other sources, but

they may still not be

historically accurate.

Chapter 16: The Ancestors of St. Anne

This shows the ancestors of St. Anne

back to Aaron, brother of Moses, through

41 generations.

The Cohen family were the head priests of

Jerusalem. Zadoc (son of Achitob) is

famously known as “Zadok the Priest”.

Chapter 17: Saint Joseph’s Father’s Ancestors back

to Jesse

This chapter shows the

ancestors of Saint

Joseph’s father, Jacob,

back to Solomon, David

and Jesse.

Jesse’s ancestors will be

shown in the next chapter.

Chapter 18: Ancestors of Jesse back to Abraham

This final chapter shows the ancestors

of Jesse, back to the earliest individual

in my family tree: Abraham, born around

1800BC.

I could easily trace this back to Adam and

Eve, but I severely doubt the Bible’s

reliability considering it claims that Adam

and Eve were the first humans. Instead I

have left Abraham, the shared ancestor of

the Jews, Muslims and Christians as my

earliest individual.

It is interesting to note that although

Abraham supposedly lived around 590

years before Moses, they are exactly the

same number of generations from Jesus,

suggesting that Abraham’s descendants

had children much later in life on average.

Individuals are listed by forename. Other entries that are not names (locations, races)

are in bold. Prefixes, nicknames and titles are mentioned after the name in brackets.

Numbers (in royalty) are mentioned after the forename and before the surname, but

surnames take priority when ordering alphabetically. Surname prefixes (Von, de, of,

the, etc.) are in the normal place, and take alphabetical priority over the main

surname. To find someone by surname, please first use the kinship chart beginning

on page 58 to find their forename. sp. Is used to mean “specifically”.
