COURSE PLANNING FOR CURRENT 8TH GRADERS
We are excited to let you know that class registration for the 2020-21 school year is just around the corner. Click here for details on course planning. You can also visit the WSCA Counseling Department Website
for more information.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
As part of our middle school supports and processes, we follow these Conflict Resolution Tips and Strategies when supporting students with conflict resolution. This process has supported our students with acquiring the skills and language needed to discuss difficult content and solve problems with their peers. Families can use these strategies at home too.
HEALTH AWARENESS ANNOUNCEMENT As you may know, there have been reports of a new virus in China called the novel coronavirus. While there have been a few isolated cases outside of China, our community as a whole is at a very low level of risk. We want to reassure you that we are monitoring the situation
and will follow guidance from our local health department. Please visit their page at Placer County Health Department for additional information.

We would like to use this as an opportunity to revisit best practices to avoid spreading any infection:
• If your student is sick or exhibiting contagious symptoms such as a fever or significant cough, or sneezing, please keep them home from school to avoid spreading illness. We request that all students are fever-free, without the use of fever reducing medications, for 24 hours before returning to school.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school safe for all students.
HEARING AND VISION SCREENING We have begun hearing and vision screenings for students in Kinder, 2nd, 5th, and 8th Grade. According to state law, students in selected grades are screened annually for distance and near vision acuity, hyperopia, and hearing. The school nurse will notify parents if any concerns are noted. Private screening in lieu of screening by the school nurse is acceptable. Results should be documented by the student’s MD and presented to the school office for documentation in the student’s health file. Parental written refusal of school screening should be submitted to the school office prior to the date of screening.
CHROMEBOOK FAQ GRADES 7-8 (PLEASE REVIEW) As part of efforts to ensure student safety and to simultaneously reduce technology violations, we have created slides that communicate the expectations for all students, staff, and families. A student version of the following presentation was discussed during Gator Time last week. Please review it so that, as a parent,
you are also aware of safety measures that we have in place, including features that you and your child may access. Highlights include:
• Chromebooks are for educational activities only and are not to be used in lieu of cell phones and personal communication between peers
• Chromebooks and school accounts are the property of Rocklin Academy Family of Schools and are not for personal use
• What to avoid when using school accounts in order to stay safe and in compliance with the Technology Use Agreement
• Technology is monitored by Gaggle 24 hours a day, seven days a week
• Gaggle picks up intentions of violence, inappropriate physical contact, hate speech, drug and alcohol use, and self-harm
• Gaggle may notify the student, administrators (ANY TIME, including the middle of the night, weekends, and holidays and we will respond), or even law enforcement in which a parent meeting will be requested with the student and parent(s) the following school day
• If students have a concern, they should notify an adult or use Reporting Up /parents also have access to this feature
Please review the slides and contact your child's Gator Time teacher if you have any questions.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS UPDATE Awesome work Gateway! We are well into our fundraiser for Pennies for Patients and we have already raised over $5,000! A short video of staff members playing the Pie Face game will be coming out soon. Keep bringing in change to your
classroom teachers and donating online to unlock more videos. Here is the link to our school's fundraising page. This year we are encouraging students to bring in coins, donate online, or by check. Students have until February 14th to donate. You may have seen in your teacher's newsletters that we are asking for parent volunteers to help pass out the Hero Gear students earn through their donations. We will have Hero Gear pick up days this Friday, February 7th and 14th. We are still looking for one parent from 4th through 8th grade to help! If you are available to pass out the Hero Gear during your child's lunch recess please sign up here. Your help is greatly appreciated. Together we can make a difference in the lives of students who are diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma.
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS SPIRIT DAYS: To show our school spirit and support for the Pennies for Patients Fundraiser, our student leaders have planned exciting spirit days for students and staff to celebrate and have fun. We encourage ALL students to participate and show their excitement about being a part of Gateway's Pennies for Patients Hero Squad! Please see the details below:
• Friday - 2/7/20: Superhero Day • Friday - 2/14/20: Color Day: Red and Pink
SOS (SIGNS OF SUICIDE) TRAINING On Monday, February 10, 2020, we will be presenting our 7th Grade students with the SOS curriculum designed for middle school. The presentation contains important information on mental health and how students can connect with trusted adults to help themselves and support their peers.
Below please find a list of books recommended by our school counselor as well as a link to the SOS program. These resources will help you talk through this topic with your teen. If you missed the Parent
Information Meeting, you can access the information and the Opt-Out Form by clicking here. Opt-Out Forms are due to the Gateway Front Desk by Wednesday, February 5th by 4 p.m. You will receive a confirmation email by the end of the day on February 6th that your Opt-Out form has been received by the counseling department.

PHOTOGRAPHY PRIVACY REMINDER Please help us respect all students' privacy and keep students safe by being aware of our photography/video expectations while at school. “Unless expressly directed by a teacher or staff member and in accordance with existing parent permissions, students (or parents) are prohibited from the taking of pictures or video/audio recordings of
students, staff, or school or private property while under the jurisdiction of school rules.”-Parent Student Handbook. Thank you for your support!
TRAFFIC CORNER Rocklin Academy Parents: You do an amazing job dropping off and picking up over 1,200 students in our traffic windows each morning and night! It is quite a feat! We greatly appreciate your compliance with our traffic patterns and times. A friendly reminder concerning our business park neighbors: please DO NOT drop-off or pick-up in front of our business park neighbor buildings! Each business has parking spaces assigned to them for their guests, please be respectful of this, and be a kind neighbor! Thank you.
