In 1897 Theodor Herzl established what is now known as the World Zionist Congress. The WZC is the legislative body of the World Zionist Organization, which promotes Zionism. The WZC is made up of 500 delegates and meets every five years, with its next meeting scheduled for October 20, 2020. We, as members of Congregation Gates of Prayer, have a say in who represents us. From Martin Luther King Day (January 21) to Purim (March 11), Jews all over the world will be voting for their representatives in the WZC. With a strong election turnout, we can ensure that the Reform Movement is well- represented. This will allow us to allocate funding to our causes and support our institutions in the State of Israel. I am asking members of our congregation (and any Jews who may be reading this) to support ARZA in this election. The Association of Reform Zionists of America is the Israel arm of the Reform Movement. Their mission is to maintain and grow the connection between Reform Jews in America with Reform Jews in Israel. During the upcoming weeks, there will be voting stations in the Loewy Lobby. You will find them on your way into Friday night services, as well as J-FLEx on Sundays. Please take a moment and cast your vote. Every Jew who is at least 18 years old is eligible to vote. There is a minimal processing fee. During the last election five years ago, there were fewer than 100 votes cast in the New Orleans area. It is my hope that our congregation alone can improve upon that number. This is our best and only way that American Jews can weigh in democratically about issues in Israel. Please visit www.arza.org to learn more. If you are interested in joining Rabbis Gerber and Erdheim at the AIPAC Policy Conference, please contact Rabbi Gerber at [email protected].

In 1897 Theodor Herzl established what is now known as the World Zionist Congress. The WZC is the legislative body of the World Zionist Organization, which promotes Zionism. BROTHERHOOD SUPER BOWL POOL

Keep an eye out for the Brotherhood Super Bowl Pool this year! Cost will be $10 a

square and you can sign up on the board at CGoP.

On Saturday, January 11th, over 50 women from Congregation Gates of Prayer and four local area sisterhoods gathered for Louisiana Area Day. Hosted by Congregation Gates of Prayer Sisterhood, women were inspired for a day of spirituality, sisterhood and social good.

We began the day with Shabbat services -- experiencing such a special moment when the large group of sisterhood past-presidents all stood together for an aliyah at the Torah. During the kiddush luncheon, we honored long-time Sisterhood member Nita-Joan Sams and presented her with the WRJ Special Service pin.

Next, Women of Reform Judaism President (and proud Southwest District member) Susan Bass, inspired attendees to take action in Louisiana with her workshop on Reproductive Health & Rights.

Lastly, we finished the day learning how to really ‘hear’ the women of our sisterhoods when Southwest District President Jennifer Daley and First Vice President Cheryl Barenberg facilitated a workshop on ‘Listening Campaigns’.

A big thank you to Susan Bass for coming in from Houston and giving us a fabulous Shabbaton weekend of inspiration and leadership development, Joanne Fried for chairing the Area Day luncheon and Gates of Prayer Sisterhood President Claudia Shabetai for organizing a wonderful weekend for our women’s group.

On Friday, January 10, CGoP Sisterhood held their ‘Sisterhood Sparkle Shabbat’. Sisterhood members answered the call to give back to the community by donating cleaning items to the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter.

Sisterhood sends a BIG thank you to Tory May for organizing and leading such a beautiful Sisterhood

Shabbat service, chair Judy Stiebel for her help in organizing and WRJ President Susan Bass for

delivering such a meaningful D’var Torah.

I’d like to summarize what Brotherhood has done for Congregation of Gates of Prayer over the last several months. We had our opening steak dinner in August and prepared breakfast for the opening Sunday of religious school’s new format, J-FLEx. Brotherhood sponsored the bagel breakfast for Rabbi Erdheim’s installation weekend. During the fall holidays, Brotherhood put up the sukkah, co-sponsored a family night in the sukkah with Sisterhood, cooked breakfast for the Sukkot morning service, sponsored the Simchat Torah reception, and cooked a Munchkin Minyan spaghetti dinner. We have worked with Sisterhood in bringing quality speakers for our health programming and lox and bagel breakfasts. Serving our famous hot dogs and ½ lb. grilled hamburgers and all the fixins, we watched the Saints in the Manheim Social Hall. Torah Study on Shabbat mornings, once a month, is a Brotherhood event. The Synagogue Directory is also a product of the hard work that Brotherhood does.

Any income generated by Brotherhood from fundraising and donations goes back to the synagogue to fund different projects such as the Henry S. Jacobs Camp camperships and the many things just described above. All these things are very typical of what we do for this synagogue, and we do it out of love and devotion.

When people describe Gates of Prayer as the best place for their family to affiliate, I can’t help but believe that the programming of Brotherhood and Sisterhood plays a big part in what they see and hear and influences their decision to join our congregation.

I invite you, yes you, to support our events and get involved. This is your congregation. Be a part in helping us to continue to the great work we do.

Robert Liniado, President of Gates of Prayer Brotherhood
