In 2013, The Garden brings together an unparalleled program of artists from around the world. Artists who reach, defy, inspire and dream.

From the creators of the amazing Cantina we present the world premiere of LIMBO, crafting unforgettable experiences that will remain forever etched in your mind. We welcome the eye-popping Circolombia (Columbia), the sensational return of The Candy Butchers and the magical Leo (Germany).

Our ever-expanding list of outstanding comedy includes Ruby Wax (USA) and Heath Franklin’s Chopper and for music lovers we provide something for all tastes and ages from The Magnets (UK) to Dune and from Katie Noonan to offerings from South Australia’s cutting edge.

This year we present a range of AUSLAN interpreted events including Tom Gleeson, the international smash-hit La Soirée, Kids Comedy Gala and the laugh-inducing ponydance all the way from Ireland. (See pg. 66)

We’re also teaming up with a range of vital local charities to raise some much needed funds. Make it possible for them with a gold coin donation every Sunday. (See pg. 39)

Every year The Garden is, for us, a dream made real.

Come along with us and Make Things Happen.

Make. Believe.

MAKE THE EXTRAORDINARY. MAKE MAYHEM. MAKE YOUR MARK. BEL IEVE IN THE IMPOSSIBLE . BEL IEVE IN ADVENTURE . BEL IEVE I T ’S YOURS.

SATURDAY 16 FEB

G E M I N I D O W N SKicking horns, tap dancing beats, wacky on-stage antics and terrible jokes. It’s all part of the kooky phenomenon that is the seven-piece indie pop band Gemini Downs. With their brand new single (Jangle) in tow, and a swag of wiggle-your-bum catchy tunes, Gemini Downs guarantee an afternoon of musical good times.

SUNDAY 17 FEB

T H E H U S H E SCombining the talents of blues maestro Cal Williams Jr, acclaimed Jazz double bassist Kory Horwood, sultry chanteuse Emily Davis and silver fingered banjo player Ben Timbers, The Hushes revive and reinterpret the enduring sounds of the Appalachian mountains, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music. Their acclaimed musicianship, gripping on-stage chemistry and songs inspired by the dark, the divine and the disturbed will enchant you.

SATURDAY 23 FEB

C A R L A L I P P I SThe loneliness, sexuality and evocative imagery conjured by Carla Lippis’ Country-Noir stylings has transfixed audiences across Australia. Her work occupies a vulnerable space between country, soul and vintage pop. The craftsmanship of her self-titled debut won her the Backwater Blues & Roots award for Best Emerging Blues Act 2012. Come and see why.

SUNDAY 24 FEB

K E L LY M E N E N N E TKelly’s live show is a captivating hybrid of folk, roots and alt-country, seasoned with soulful vocals and rhythms inspired from time spent busking in Europe. This multi-award winning performer is definitely one of South Australia’s best kept secrets.

This is all part of the life and songs of The Sunlight Band.

SATURDAY 9 MAR

T H E M E R R GOriginally from Ceduna, the MERRg’s music has been described as ‘ballodic’ - a mixture of melodic ballad’s. The band’s versatile line up can often be seen swapping instruments during gigs to suit the needs of a song.

SUNDAY 10 MAR

A M B E R J O Y P O U L T O NIf you love country music make sure you spend the afternoon with the gorgeous Amber Joy Poulton. Expect hits from Loretta, Tammy, Dolly and Amber Joy’s own original treats.

SATURDAY 16 MAR

A L L A N S U M N E RAllan Sumner will blow you away. Allan is a Ngarrindjeri man born in South Australia. From the producers behind the critically acclaimed and award-winning Cantina comes the latest thrilling production; destined to be the highlight of the 2013 Garden program.

Circus, magic, spectacle and dance. LIMBO’s hypnotic seduction is a celebration of otherworldly proportions. With rumours of desires granted and whispers of spirits in suspension; displaced characters wait on the edge of false awakening. Welcome to the illogical world of LIMBO.

Exotic encounters unfold between a mystical coterie of highly skilled international performers from New York, London, Brussels and Berlin. Witness heart-stopping illusions, gravity-defying manoeuvres, and explosions of hybrid dance; all infused by delirious melodies and hedonistic beats from LIMBO’s live band of musical chameleons.

An hour of illusion, unforgettable music and anomalistic spectacle from an array of internationally renowned performers and outstanding technical minds.

The show that heralded a renaissance within the new circus movement is back!

The Candy Butchers make their highly anticipated return to The Garden to lead you on an exquisitely macabre journey into an imaginary neo-vaudevillian sideshow era.

Contemporary circus luminaries Derek Ives (Circus Oz), Azaria Universe (Burlesque Hour, La Clique) and Jess Love (La Soirée, Circa!) and DJ Garner (Cirque du Soleil) join forces to a create delicately touching, visually enchanting and refreshingly dark theatre experience.

The Candy Butchers delve deep into the world of old time circus and physical storytelling to create high-risk human spectacle, blending the perverse with the poetic, to create circus with a heart… a twisted black one!

What would happen if the laws of gravity were to suddenly change?

This is the unusual journey of an otherwise ordinary man whose world becomes physically unhinged. He is a lone man with a small suitcase, whiling away time in a nondescript room. But as time passes he becomes increasingly aware that all may not be what it really seems in his ordinary world.

Leo is a mind-bending, funny, surreal, and surprisingly touching work that challenges the senses and tests perceptions of reality through the clever interplay of live performance and video projection. LEO leaves audience members wondering which way is up and which way is down.

From the producers of SOAP and winner of many awards including Best of Edinburgh Fringe, Leo has since gone on to dazzle audiences and wow the critics in New York.

Glorious vocal harmony and jaw-dropping beatboxing from acclaimed British vocal group The Magnets, back in Adelaide for the Australian première of their hit Best-of-British show ‘Homegrown’.

One of the break-through acts of the 2012 Fringe and 2011 Cabaret Festivals, this ‘six-man sound machine’ make their music with their mouths alone in a sonically stunning, spectacularly theatrical display of totally a cappella singing.

Conceived amidst the euphoria of the 2012 London Olympics, ‘Homegrown’ celebrates five decades of British pop music, from The Beatles and Led Zeppelin through to Adele. Highlights include an incredible mega-medley taking in the entire history of British pop and beatboxer Andy Frost’s show-stopping drum solo.

Irish-based comedy dance company ponydance is back at the Fringe with a new show - the hilarious ‘Anybody Waitin’?’ and according to The Scotsman ‘It’s sheer entertainment... the pace never drops and the fun never stops in this uplifting, lycra-stretching, high-kicking gem of a show.’

Paula is back in a bar and still waiting for a man and Deirdre is waiting for Paula. But hey! We’re all waiting for something or someone. These masters of comedy do their best to help Paula by dancing their way through the maze of a disco-infused time warp. This is a show of incredible Movers and Shakers, absolutely fabulous dancing and guaranteed LOL!

Frank Woodley (Lano & Woodley) and Simon Yates (acrobat) have teamed up to create an extraordinary new show. Caged and subjected to absurd experiments the twins, Viktor and Vissilli, dream of escape. With incredible comic audacity, a world of hilarious and heart-breaking nonsense is created through acrobatics, stunts, illusions, songs, pratfalls and pathos in the great clowning tradition.

Beautiful and bleak. Horrifying and funny. It brings together two uniquely skilled physical and comedic talents to create a new show with big laughs, surprising warmth and explosive physicality.

‘One of our greatest comic talents…at once dapper and goofy, Woodley marries classic comedy schtick with clever, modern material.’ The Age

‘acrobat is an exceptional troupe, layering physical skills with multiple implications playing with our expectations and puncturing our complacency.’ The Age

Fresh from a hit season at Sydney Opera House, Edinburgh Fringe smash and YouTube sensation Piff the Magic Dragon finally makes his Adelaide Fringe debut, accompanied by Mr Piffles.

As seen on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and racking up more than 6 million hits on YouTube, Piff has appeared with The Muppets at Radio City Music Hall NYC, and performed to over 150,000 people as opening act for Mumford & Sons on their recent UK tour.

But it’s not all about the dragon. Mr Piffles, the World’s First Magic Performing Chihuahua™ will be cheating death nightly as he is laminated live on stage, confronts the Strait Jacket of Insanity and pits himself against the Cannon of Certain Doom.

Will Piff find his princess? Will Mr Piffles survive? Will you be there if he doesn’t?

While The Garden is constantly working on ways to improve the site and its access, the parkland itself offers some challenges. In places the pathways are steep and consistently so. A number of venues in The Garden are antique wooden theatres, which cannot be modified. Where possible, paths and ramps have been installed to improve access to the site and its venues.

The Deluxe, Cupola, Umbrella Revolution, Campanile, Le Cascadeur, Paradiso Spiegeltent, Romantiek, The Vagabond and The Big Top are wheelchair accessible.

The Spare Room is not wheelchair accessible.

The Garden includes accessible toilets.

The Garden is located adjacent to designated accessible parking bays.

Please visit www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/services/parking-and-regulations.html or call 08 8203 7203 for any further information.
