As the smallest country in Africa, you’d be forgiven for missing The Gambia on the map. But

this vibrant country boasts a magnificent coastline, some stunning national parks and a

colourful African culture.

The Gambia has over 10,000 Girl Guides who are making a difference to their community,

despite the challenges that they face every day. Widespread poverty puts pressure on girls

to leave school when they are young. But Guiding provides a place where young girls can

continue to learn new skills, build their confidence – and of course, have fun along the way!

GOLD (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development) is a self-sustaining community

development project that was has been running with The Gambian Girl Guides Association

for two years. In October 2014, a team of six Guiding members from the UK will volunteer

in The Gambia to provide training and support for leaders, so that they can help their own

guides change their future for the better.

Thank you for supporting us in GOLD by taking part in this challenge badge. You will be

helping us to make a difference to girls’ lives in The Gambia, and we hope you enjoy learning

about this special country as much as we did!

Life in The Gambia is very different from life in the United Kingdom, including the language, climate, and food. The Gambia is tropical and very hot all year around (there’s only a small change in temperature between summer and winter). The main language in The Gambia is (African) English, which is the official language taught in schools. There are at least ten languages spoken in The Gambia including Wollof and Maninkakan. French is also occasionally spoken as The Gambia borders French-speaking Senegal. Food in The Gambia contains a lot of fish, due to the coastline and the river Gambia which runs through the country. The fish is eaten with rice, vegetables, spices and sometimes peanut butter, but it can also be substituted with meat or chicken. There are four traditional dishes in The Gambia, each made with fish, meat or chicken: Benachin – rice cooked with meat or fish, vegetables and tomatoes; Domoda – meat stewed in a peanut puree and eaten with rice; Superkanja – a mix of okra, fish or meat, palm oil, onions and pepper boiled together and Chicken Yassa – chicken cooked with fresh lime, onions and ground black pepper.

Language

Wolof Language is spoken in the Gambia

Learn numbers and some simple phrases in Wolof: The Wolof numeral system is based on the numbers 5 and 10.The Wolof numerals 1-10 are given below. So juróom benn is ‘five + one = 6’ and fukk ak benn is ‘ten + one = 11’. Gambian Homes

Make a model of a Gambian home, using recycled materials.

How The Gambia is different from where you live The climate, environment, and society are very different in The Gambia.

Compare life in The Gambia to where you live: o Role of women o Climate o Tourism o Education o History and politics o Recreational activities

The Gambian Flag The Gambia gained independence on 18 February 1965 and it was on that day that they adopted their flag. Each part of the flag has a different meaning: The red stripe represents the sun shining on the Gambia River, the position of the country to the equator and the red savannahs or grasslands. The white stripes in between the other colours of the flag stand for the unity, peace and purity The blue stripe runs through the centre of the flag and represents the River Gambia flowing through the centre of the country between the red savannahs and the green forests The green stripe represents the land, forest and agriculture ACTIVITY

Make a safety pin badge with beads in the style of the Gambian flag The number of safety pins and beads required will depend on how big the safety pins are. You need a larger safety pin to go along the top and to hook the other safety pins onto.

Page 7: The Gambia Challenge Badge 2014 · 2014. 4. 24. · 4 The Gambia challenge badge is a fun and interactive way to learn about living in The Gambia. It has activities for all ages,

1. Open a safety pin, and slip the seed beads onto it as per the pattern below. Once

all beads are in place, close the safety pin. Repeat until enough safety pins have

been beaded.

2. Take the larger safety pin and feed the smaller safety pins (with the beads on

them) by pushing them around the coil at the end. This will then hook the safety

onto the long metal section of the safety pin and will dangle down.

3. Repeat until all the safety pins are hooked on the large safety pins.

Tourism

Over 100,000 tourists visit The Gambia every year. Imagine you are planning a trip to The

Gambia. What would you take? Research accommodation, activities, and places to visit.

African Mask Competition

Masks are a big part of African culture. Find some pictures of African masks and make one of

your own using card/paper mache. Send a picture to us at [email protected]

and we will add it to the gallery on our blog. We will have a winner per Guiding section and

an overall winner. The competition will close a week before we travel but any masks sent to

use after this date will still be added to the blog.

Music

Making music using drums is popular in many African

countries including The Gambia. Listen to a recording of some Gambian/African Drumming.

Make your own drum and, in a group make some African-style music.

Singing

Learn a traditional Gambian Song. Visit this website for ideas and MP3 recordings:

http://mamalisa.com/world/gambia.html

Gambian meal etiquette

When Gambians gather to eat meals they have a traditional method (etiquette) that is

considered polite. Gather together as a six/patrol/group and eat a snack/meal using

Gambian etiquette.

Wash hands and remove shoes before sitting down on a mat.

In the middle of a mat place the communal food bowl (the bowl usually contains rice

with a sauce, vegetables and possibly meat at the centre, but you can eat dried

fruit/crisps/cereal etc. if you prefer).

Do not begin to eat until your hosts start.

Only pick up and eat with your right hand, picking up food from the section of the

bowl closest to you.

Shape the rice into an egg-shape before picking it up and move vegetables or meat

from the centre of the bowl to your section before picking them up to eat.

Adults should try to finish eating before the children.

It is considered polite to mention how delicious the meal was and to quietly belch to

show your appreciation.

Gambian Diet

Find out about the typical diet of a Gambian girl. Think about how it is similar or different

from your own e.g. nutritional value, variety.

The Gambia may be small but it has many areas of natural beauty. The Gambia is a popular

destination for birdwatchers with over 560 species of birds.

The country is also home to many animals including: monkeys, baboons, savannah

antelopes, mongooses, crocodiles, cobras (snakes), ground squirrels, hippopotamus and

aardvarks.

Elephants and lions were also found in The Gambia but were hunted to extinction many

years ago. The last elephant was seen in 1913.

The Gambia has seven national parks and nature reserves. Abuko Nature Reserve is the

oldest and was established in 1916.

The environment is very important to life in The Gambia, as around 72% of Gambians work

in agriculture. Areas of rainforest are being cleared (deforestation) to provide more land for

growing food. It is estimated that around 6% of The Gambia’s rainforest is cleared each

year.

UK and The Gambia birds match up

In a group match the pictures of birds with their names and descriptions (see Resources

p21). Have you seen any of the UK birds before?

To make the activity harder for Senior Section and Adults, you could separate the name of

each bird from its description.

Birdwatching

Go birdwatching and try to identify the birds you see. Use The Woodland Trust bird spotter

sheet to help you (see Resources p22).

Make an African animal mask using card or paper-mache. Send us a photo of members of

your unit wearing their masks by email at [email protected] to enter our

mask competition. We will post the photos on our blog. Visit the blog to find out more

about our trip and see what other groups have made.

Hand bird

Paint your hand to look like a bird’s head (using face paints or water-soluble paint). Strike a

pose and take a photo and get it printed. Use your printed bird head to make a card or

bookmark.

12

Discover nature in your area

Visit a local National Park, Nature Reserve or Woodland. Find out more about the plants and

animals that live there. You may want to try tree bark/leaf rubbing, drawing what you see,

or pond dipping (check whether you need permission first).

Gambian National Parks

In a small group research the national parks of The Gambia and present your findings as a

talk/poster to your unit.

What habitats are found in the national park?

What animals live there?

What plants might you find there?

How are the national parks protected?

Land and Climate

In a small group compare the land and climate of The Gambia using the cards provided (see

Resources p23).

Rainforest in The Gambia

Rainforest in The Gambia is being cleared to make way for farmland. Discuss as a

group/unit:

How are rainforests good for the environment? Examples for ideas:

o Trees provide food or shelter for wildlife

o Home to a wide variety of plants and animals

o Plants produce oxygen gas, which animals need to breathe

o Rainforests release water into the air, contributing to rainfall. When

rainforests are cut down less water enters the air, so rainfall decreases. This

can lead to drought.

How do rainforests benefit people? Examples for ideas:

o Fuel e.g. firewood, charcoal

o Food e.g. fruits, vegetables, nuts, sugar,

o Building materials and furniture e.g. wood, string/rope, rubber

o Medicines - plants produce many chemicals that can be used to treat illnesses

o Other products – e.g. shampoo, soaps, perfumes, cosmetics use oils from the

rainforest

Guiding in The Gambia started in 1923. It was set up by the wives of British civil servants in

The Gambia, together with Gambian women who kept Girlguiding going. Guiding continued

until 1943 when it became inactive due to lack of adult Leaders.

In 1946, it started up again by the first Gambian Chief Guide Commissioner, Mrs Rosamond

Fowlls. New units were opened in various parts of the country.

Guiding is now found in every accessible area of the country and has reached all sections of

communities regardless of religion and ethnic origin.

Many units are school based, due to the fact that the majority of adult Leaders are teachers

and have the ability to devote much of their leisure time to the growth and development of

children, preparing them for the demands and challenges of society in a rapidly changing

world.

Careers

The Gambian Girl Guides run Skills Centres for 15-20 year old girls to learn skills they need

after they leave school to get jobs in hospitality and tourism.

Think about what type of job you might like to have in the future. What skills do you think

you need for that job? Where/how can you learn them?

Uniform

The Gambia is a tropical country and the weather is very hot all year round. The rainy season is between July and October. Design a new Rainbow/Brownie/Guide uniform suitable for The Gambian climate. Tie Dye Gambian Leader uniforms are made using Batik and Tie Dye. Use Batik or Tie Dye to decorate a neckerchief t-shirt or other item. Penpals Write a letter to a Brownie or a Guide in The Gambia telling her about your life and Guiding in the UK. Or why not try something different and pretend that you are a Brownie/Guide in The Gambia, writing a letter to the UK. What’s your favourite activity? What do you find most difficult?

Games in The Gambia The GOLD team will run training sessions with Guides and leaders. These sessions will include games. Learn and play a new game with your unit. Guides and senior section make up a game that you think they could play in The Gambia and teach it to a younger section. Brownie and Guide Laws The Brownie & Guide Laws in The Gambia are different from those in the UK. Find out how the laws are different from yours? If you could change Brownie or Guide law, what would it be and why? Would you add any more laws to what we already have? The Gambia Guide Law 1. A Guide’s honour is to be trusted. 2. A Guide is loyal. 3. A Guide’s duty is to be useful and to help others. 4. A Guide is a friend to all and a sister to every other Guide. 5. A Guide is courteous. 6. A Guide is a friend to animals. 7. A Guide obeys orders. 8. A Guide smiles and sings under all difficulties. 9. A Guide is thrifty. 10. A Guide is pure in thought, word and deed.

Brownie Guide Law

A Brownie gives in to the older folk. A Brownie does not give in to herself.

The Promise How does The Gambian promise differ from yours? Do you think all Promises within guiding should be the same? If you could change the promise what would you change it to? The Gambian Guides Promise:- I promise on my honour that I will do my best: To do my duty to God and my country, To help other people at all times, and To obey the Guide Law. The Gambian Brownie Promise:– I promise to do my best to do my duty to God and my country; To help other people every day, especially those at home.

Helping your community

Girl Guides in The Gambia participate in various services at hospitals and health centres,

cleaning public places such as mosques, churches, post offices, supermarkets, local markets,

homes of disabled and elderly people, etc.

Is this different to what you do as a Rainbow/Brownie/Guide? Would you like to do this?

What do you think your duties are as a Rainbow/Brownie or Guide? Could you do better?

Trefoil

Make The Gambia Guiding trefoil out of card or material. Design a new trefoil for your unit.

You can send a photo of your trefoil designs to [email protected] and we will

post the photos on our blog.
