For somebody best known forwriting books, Ernest Heming-way was as famous as any movie
star, sports hero orrock idol you canname in the last cen-tury — or this one. That’s right. Thisone. It seems we still
can’t stop talking about him evenbeyond the millennium.
The April publication of Hem-ingway’s Brain, a forensic inquiryinto the physical traumas that ledto his suicide in 1961, is being fol-lowed by Mary V. Dearborn’s Er-nest Hemingway (Knopf, 627 pp.,eeeE out of four), the first full-fledged biography in 15 years.
It, too, is a kind of extended au-topsy, not only of Hemingway’slife, but his reputations as a mod-el of American virility and an en-
during literary figure. All of thesewere subject to scrutiny by schol-ars, journalists and skeptics evenwhen Hemingway was a living, breathing Nobel Prize winner.
Though some may wonderwhether at this late date we need600-plus pages on one of themost written-about lives in litera-ture, Dearborn’s contribution tothe biographical corpus benefitsfrom bringing up the rear of sucha long parade. There can’t be anynew facts about the man every-body started calling “Papa” whenhe was still in his 20s, includingthe lifelong fetish he had for gen-der-switching, dramatized in hisposthumously published novel,The Garden of Eden.
But there is always room forfresh perspective. And Dearborn, who has published life stories oftwo other exemplars of Americanmachismo, Henry Miller andNorman Mailer, brings a keenlydispassionate, coolly discerningtone to her narrative.
She refuses to indulge Hem-ingway’s odious behavioral tics. But she also persuasively explainswhy so many others did: “Simplyput, people wanted him to likethem, so he got away with morethan other people did. His charis-
ma protectedhim from theconsequencesof his mostoutrageousactions.”
So the con-temporary reader
has to take Heming-way with all his con-tradictions. JamesJoyce on the onehand described him
as “a big powerful peasant, strongas a buffalo … and ready to livethe life he writes about.” EdmundWilson, who otherwise admiredHemingway’s writing, called him“a real all-American S.O.B., meanand curmudgeonist, quarrelsomeand extremely egocentric.”
Dearborn’s rendition of his lifemakes you admire Hemingway’sheadlong pursuit of authentic ex-perience at work, at war or at playas a means to make his writingmore honest. But you grow to de-test the haphazard tantrums and
indignities he visits upon eventhose, such as F. Scott Fitzgeraldand Gertrude Stein, who encour-aged and promoted his work.
Most, if not all of Hemingway’sbad behavior had clinical expla-nations. Dearborn, using researchthat’s recently come to light, blames severe head injuries, withhis fifth concussion, coming inthe 1954 plane crash in Africawhen the world at first believedhe’d perished. If doctors hadknown then what they know nowabout chronic traumatic enceph-alopathy, would Hemingway havereceived better treatment? Dear-born says we can only speculate.
All we have, in the end, are hisbooks, and on these, Dearborn’sassessments pretty much followwhat is now accepted wisdom:That Hemingway’s short stories, his 1926 breakthrough novel, TheSun Also Rises, and everything inhis subsequent novel, A Farewellto Arms, up to its flawed conclu-sion, are what will endure.
Bio shows why we still can’t get enough of HemingwayGene SeymourSpecial for USA TODAY
