2017 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends,

What do you hope for?

What future do you envision for your family, your community, and your world? What hopes do you have for the children of the next generation?

At Florence Fuller Child Development Centers, we build on that hope.

We teach the children most in need in our community, because it’s only through the power of early education that they can hope to become happy, successful adults. We care for the littlest babies and toddlers from families living in poverty, because it’s only through loving and consistent care that they can hope to grow healthy while their parents work hard to meet their needs. We open our doors and our arms wide with education and support for the whole family, because it’s only through a strong and nurturing household that they can hope their children will break the generational cycle of poverty. Everything we do starts with hope. But we aren’t hoping alone, and we never have.

Our hope comes from kindhearted people like you.

Every time you donate, volunteer, and spread awareness, you ignite a flame of hope for these children and their families who need it most. You give them the most precious gift in life: hope for a brighter tomorrow, and the foundation for lifelong success. We could never do it without you.

You are the reason these children will have the chance to reach their potential, unencumbered by the burdens of poverty. You are the reason their families and our entire community will grow stronger every day.

You are the reason to hope! Thank you for helping us achieve that hope.

Bernard A. Finkelstein Ellyn Okrent, LCSW2017 President & Chairman of the Board Chief Executive Officer

MEET LORI AND JENNALori is a single mom struggling to make ends meet while raising her 3-year-old daughter Jenna and caring for her aging mother. She workslong, hard hours managing a local fast food restaurant while hermother cared for Jenna at home. But Lori’s income was simply notenough to provide for all of her family’s needs.

The family suffered a devastating blow when Lori’s mother passed away of a heart attack after a long struggle with heart disease. Lori faced

not only her grief, but also fear of an uncertain future. Who would care for Jenna? How could she possibly afford child care? How could she hope

to keep them afloat?

Furthermore, what if she went down the same road as her mother? As a struggling single mom with limited income and time, she often resorted to taking home what her

fast food workplace allowed, just so she and Jenna would have food to eat. It was her only option.

A friend told Lori about Florence Fuller Child Development Centers, and Lori reached out to enroll Jenna right away. She was surprised to learn FFCDC provided more than affordable child care – Jenna would receive a quality early education, the foundation for a lifetime of learning, preventative health and behavioral screenings, and healthy meals and snacks daily. Lori was hesitant about FFCDC’s mandatory parent nutrition courses, but agreed to attend so that Jenna could be enrolled.

It only took one course for Lori to open her eyes and see the impact that her family’s nutrition had on their lives! She resolved to attend every nutrition course. She learned how to plan meals on a budget, how to ensure meals are nutritious, and how to introduce new foods to her child. Lori impressed the instructors with her commitment to implement all she learned to instill healthy eating habits in Jenna for life! In her heart, she held on to a hope that her daughter would grow up healthy and happy.

Six months later, Jenna is a fan of healthy snacks instead of French fries! Lori found she has much more energy to dedicate to her daughter and household than before. And most importantly, her cholesterol and blood sugar are now at a healthy level, ensuring she’ll be there for Jenna for many more years to come.

The power of education for both children and parents at FFCDC makes an enormous difference for those who count on us. And it’s only possible because of the investment you make in families like Lori and Jenna.

The Florence Fuller Child Development Foundation was founded in 2002 to provide for the long-term growth and security of the Florence Fuller Child Development Centers through the management and investment of endowments and other long-term planned giving.

Though the Centers receives funding from federal, state, and local governments, there are still large financial gaps that must be filled to provide for the needs of our area’s most vulnerable children and families. Gifts to the Foundation ensure that the Centers can help our children gain the skills needed for their future success, and that their families are safe, stable, and positively contributing to our community.

Please consider the Florence Fuller Child Development Foundation in your will or estate plan. Your legacy can make life better for hundreds of children and families who need it most.

2017 ANNUAL REPORTToo many children and local families struggle in poverty in our community. Without child care, parents can’t work, and without work, they can’t afford child care! The children need a strong educational foundation in their first five crucial years if they hope to succeed into adulthood.

The work of Florence Fuller Child Development Centers fills this need. At FFCDC, children are safe, learning, and given daily nutrition while their parents stay strong in the workforce. Their young minds are engaged and enriched by curriculum with studied impact, emphasizing social skills and STEAM programming that will ensure they are prepared and competitive in a fast-paced future. Families receive the guidance they need to build self-reliant and nurturing homes. Children start school ready to achieve, and are far less likely to experience incarceration, teen pregnancy, drug abuse, or dropping out of high school! Later, with this foundation in early education, these children can fulfill their potential as doctors, lawyers, first responders, and professionals in our community.

In short, with your help, we transform the lives of children and families in need. We break the cycle of poverty instead of letting it repeat to the next generation. And we build a better future for our community.
