President’s Pen
Hello readers, just a few words from me.
In the last month there has been a number of outings and activities
that the club has put on for you. Thank you to the entertainment
committee for arranging these. There are bands that are now starting to
be hired for a Friday night, and solo artists on a Sunday afternoon,
should be a time to come down and relax in the club.
However, with this being the second edition of the Furphy, in over
one and a half years the feedback on the first issue was over whelming.
Finally a plug, the next big event on the calendar for us is
Christmas in July on the 29th July 2017. I would like to see a massive
turn out, as we have done in the past.
Quick reminder that nominations for the committee positions will
be coming up in next couple of months, so please start thinking about
standing up and holding one of these positions, as the new committee
will be taking over in September at the AGM.
Thank you
Warren Campbell
FUTURE EDITIONS OF THE FURPHY
To reduce over heads, we would like members to let us know
how they would like the Furphy to be delivered (mail or
email) or if they would like to pick their copy up from the
Club. If possible, it would be nice if everyone could pick
their copy up and at the same time, spend some time at the
Club, have a game of pool, catch up with mates, enjoy a
meal or try your luck with the Gaming Machines.

From the Secretary’s Desk
Well, the first edition of the Furphy went really well, I have
received a lot of positive feedback and a few people have asked to
contribute to our newsletter, young Trevor Chase has given me several
jokes (I’m not sure if some of his jokes are suitable for this forum, but
we will filter some of his jokes) and Peter McNeill (Lucky Pete) is
keen for a gardening segment. Give us time, we can only get better.
On the Club side of things we had and band on Friday, 26th May
and it was a good night, with over 90 meals being served from the
“Spitfire Grill” and three “Hurry Scurry’s” being drawn on the night.
We also have a new sponsor for the “Friday Night Raffles”, Adrian
Jarrett (AJ) suppling a meat tray every week, so if you or someone you
know are considering a tattoo, contact AJ at “King Tattoos”, all
members receive 10% discount.
Our intention is to provide entertainment on Friday night,
starting off with once a month, if it proves to be popular we will
increase it to twice a month and then, hopefully every Friday night.
We are also considering providing entertainment on Sunday afternoon,
starting with the second Sunday of each month, after the General
Meeting.
The intention is to encourage members and their guests to come
to the club and have a meal at the Spitfire Grill and enjoy some music,
the kitchen has meals at very good price, but if we don’t use it, we will
lose it. The intention is not to make a lot of money out of the kitchen,
but it needs to be sustainable. The purpose of the kitchen is providing
a service to the members and their guests.

WELFARE MATTERS
With Jude Firth
I have recently been through all the pamphlets that we have for you to use and
am sure that it is worth your taking a few minutes on your next visit to the
RSL Club. If you don’t visit often then take the time to come and see what is
available, I am sure you will find some that have information you have either
not thought of being available or you will be able to learn more on several
subjects. If there is something that is not covered please let me know and I will
make all endeavour to find out for you.
Guys are you having your Prostrate checked on a regular base?? Good idea for
those of you who are married or have a partner “Make it a rule that you both
have your check up at the same time Ladies have the Cancer Boob check
and Guys have the Prostrate check” then we will not have any forgotten or
put off checks and everyone will be a lot less likely to be too late in finding the
dreaded Cancer has got a hold!!!
Have you heard about the doctor who advised his patient to give up a number
of his bad lifestyle habits? When the patient asked if it would give him a
longer life, the doctor’s reply was “. I’m not sure but it sure will feel like it!”
My thoughts are live as healthy as you can but enjoy your life while you have
it.
The average Australian will spend 20 years in retirement and while most
prepare for the monetary side of planning, not many plan how they will spend
their time post-employment!!! There is plenty of assistance to plan for the
financial side of retirement that is all well and good but you can’t just stop
working you need to keep the ‘grey matter’ working so while a long holiday is
a well-earned plan it will come to an end and you need to make sure you have
a plan to ‘keep you keeping on’.

MILITARY BROTHERHOOD
MILITARY MOTOR CYCLE
(MBMMC)
PERTH SOUTH SUB BRANCH (PSSB)
Our May Stone Ride was an overnight ride to my home town, Kellerberrin in the wheatbelt. We have
had an overnighter to Kellerberrin in 2015 and my 82-year-old Dad just loved it, so our Ride Captain,
Camo thought it was time to organise another one, the smile on my Dads face on our arrival said it all.
I had organised with an ex-Navy man, Richard Marek to visit his workshop formerly known as
Dowding Motors, which was the Holden dealer for many years. Richard has turned the workshop into
a very interesting place filled with old cars and lots of old collectables. I had also organised with my
cousin’s wife, Deb Ware to also visit a local WWII Veteran, Collin Smith who had actually just turned
97 at the beginning of the week.
Richard joined the Royal Australian Navy in January 1972, he wanted to be a Stoker but in those days
billets were filled alphabetically and being his surname was M, the stoker Branch filled fast so his next
choice was a Photographer but only one position, so Richard was to become a Steward.
Richard was promoted to a Leading Seaman Steward in June 1976 before being discharged in January
1982.
He re-joined the RAN in June 1985 and posted to HMAS Cerberus with a young family before being
bounced around the country with 5 postings in 14 months. Once again, he was promoted to LSSTD in
1986 and promoted to Petty Officer in 1989.
Richard discharged in 1996 from HMAS Harman and enlisted as a Reserve to remain active. Richard
completed 23.5 years and greater than 15 years Reserves and is currently still in the Reserves until
Compulsory Retirement Age, 2019.
Richard was promoted to CPOML(S) in February 2008 when employed at the ANZAC Capability
Element Management Group in Rockingham as an OHS Supervisor. Richard was commended in the
2008 Commander Dave Allen Awards for excellence in the Navy Safety Awards and departed in 2010
after Federal Budget constraints.
Richard is also the Australian Liaison for the USS Charles F Adams (DDG2) that will be a museum
ship in Jacksonville, Florida USA later this year. Please check out the link should anyone want
additional information.
www.ussadams.com www.ussadams.com/the-australian-corner
Richard accidentally discovered the vacant workshop in Kellerberrin in 2010 and ended up purchasing
in 2011. Richards workshop was set up with his brother John Marek, also ex-Navy Steward who is
recovering from Throat Cancer and at this time is in hospital due to a jaw replacement.
Richard is always adding stuff to the workshop which has been featured in Desert Collectors
(FOXTEL May 2017) and Manspace in 2015. He has been nominated for the Small Business Awards
in 2015 and 2016 in the Central Wheatbelt. Richard’s workshop is certainly worth a look at if you are
ever out that way. www.marekbrosgarage.com
We then proceeded to the Kellerberrin & Districts Club where Deb Ware had organised for us to meet
Collin Smith. He was waiting patiently with Deb and his carer, Jane and looking forward to meeting
us. Collin was well dressed sitting with his medals displayed proudly on his chest.
Collin’s parents were farmers in Doodlakine, a small town east of Perth in the Wheatbelt area where
Collin and 3 brothers grew up helping on the farm. At the young age of 19 Collin joined the 7th
Army
Troop Company on the 24th
September 1941. Collin did 3 months training until Christmas before
being transferred to the AIF. Collin completed 6 years’ service for his country and during that time
was caught up in WWII.
7
His division was made up of 95% tradesman which were engineers and carpenters and were in
charge of all installation projects around the country. Collin recalls how cattle trains were converted
into troop carriers, with sea lanes exposed it was a safer way to move troops around the country
without being detected.
Collin’s division was sent to the Nungarin Army Depot which was an important army ordnance
camp – 5 Base Ordnance Depot was established at the Nungarin Army Depot and Workshop. The
site for the Army Depot was apparently selected as it was outside the range of Japanese carrier-based
aircraft, and was readily accessible by the rail network. Collin recalled how they had to reinforce
bridges to be able to handle the 50 ton tanks.
Another installation was a large hospital and operating theatre to be able to handle casualties of war.
Collin served all over Australia, in Penang and New Guinea and experienced Kokoda. He also
served in Japan for over a year with the occupation forces shortly after the atomic bomb was
dropped on Hiroshima in 1945.
Collin survived the war and returned to Doodlakine and farming after his discharge. He has many
stories to tell if you have some time to sit with him and listen to this wonderful gentleman, a truly
amazing man who just turned 97 on Monday 15th
May.
On behalf of our sub branch we presented Collin with a MBMMC Cap and stubby coolers, for which
put a nice big smile on his face and was so very grateful.
We thank you for your service Collin.
Big Stu offered him a ride on his trike and before we had even finished asking he was replying with
a huge “YES” with so much excitement, unfortunately Sunday the weather was not good so Collin
sadly declined but is hoping we will return again sometime soon so he can get his ride around
Kellerberrin. We would love to return to visit Collin and listen to more of his stories and take him
for that ride.
Colin’s son Wayne and all the family have passed on their true gratitude and appreciation and
sincerely thanked us for what we did to make his Dad’s day and put a big smile on his face. Wayne
said he knows his Dad enjoyed it immensely.
Thanks to everyone who was able to make the overnight ride.
Dazza

DAZZA THE KELLERBERRIN KID.
At 16yrs of age Daryl Walton {DAZZA} proudly joins the Australian Defence
Force. He enlists into the Royal Australian Navy as a junior recruit at HMAS
Leeuwin and served five and a half years in the Navy. He then transfers to the
Royal Australian Air Force and completes a further three years’ service.
Dazza is married to a beautiful lady named Shane and blessed with three lovely
children and five beautiful granddaughters. Residing in Forrestfield, with just a
short commute to his local RSL in Armadale. He became a member of the RSL
in 2014 and joins the Military Brotherhood Military Motorcycle Club.
Dazza has an amazing generous spirit and immerses a lot of his time helping
various charities. Legacy, Soldier on, Make a Wish Foundation, Cancer Council
Relay for Life, Bright blue, Perth Bikers Charity Ride.
He participates in the Perth Bikers Christmas Charity Toy Ride every year and
has done since 1997. To this current date he has only missed one toy ride that
was in 2007, where only days prior to the event he was involved in a road
accident. He said he tried to go but found the pain from his injured ankle too
excruciating. Every year since 2003 he selects a character costume to wear for
the event and attracts smiles and laughter from participants and family
onlookers.
Another example of his dedication would be ANZAC Day. He takes a week’s
leave from his postal job to help sell RSL merchandise. This year he devoted his
entire day at Armadale shopping centre displaying and selling merchandise.
Then he actively sells poppies for Remembrance Day in November at Bunnings
Hardware.
The RSL is concerned with decline of young troops who served in the Defence
Force and overseas not wanting to join. We can only be grateful for this
wonderful and well respected gentleman {DAZZA}.
Lucky Pete.

MILITARY HISTORYFOR JUNE
D DAY OVERVIEW
“You are about to embark on the great crusade toward which we
have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon
you… I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and
skill in battle.” – Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower
It is hard to conceive the epic scope of this decisive battle that
foreshadowed the end of Hitlers dream of Nazi domination. Overlord
was the largest air, land, and sea operation undertaken before or since
June 6, 1944. The landing included over 5,000 ships, 11,000 airplanes,
and over 150,000 service men. After years of meticulous planning
and seemingly endless training, for the Allied Forces, it all came down
to this: The boat ramp goes down, then jump, swim, run, and crawl to
the cliffs. Many of the first young men (most not yet 20 years old)
entered the surf carrying eighty pounds of equipment. They faced over
200 yards of beach before reaching the first natural feature offering any
protection. Blanketed by small-arms fire and bracketed by artillery, they
found themselves in hell. When it was over, the Allied Forces had
suffered nearly 10,000 casualties; more than 4,000 were dead. Yet
somehow, due to planning and preparation, and due to the valor,
Fidelity, and sacrifice of the Allied Forces, Fortress Europe had been
breached.

WHAT DOES D-DAY MEAN?
The terms D-Day and H-Hour are used for the day and hour on which a
combat attack or operation is to be initiated. They designate day and
hour for an operation when the actual day and hour have not yet been
determined or announced. The letters are derived from the words for
which they stand, “D” for the day of the invasion and “H” for the hour
the operation actually begins. When used in combination with figures
and plus or minus signs, these terms indicate the length of time
preceding or following a specific action. Thus, H-3 means 3 hours
before H-hour, and D+3 means 3 days after D-day. H+75 minutes
means H-hour plus 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Planning papers for large-scale operations are made up in detail long
before, specific dates are set. Phased orders are planned for execution on
D-Day or H-Hour minus or plus a certain number of days, hours, or
minutes. According to the U.S. Army’s Center of Military History, the
earliest known use of these terms is in Field Order Number 9, First
Army, American Expeditionary Forces. It is dated September 7, 1918:
“The first Army will attack at H hour on D day with the object of
forcing the evacuation of the St. Mihiel Salient.” D-Day for the invasion
of Normandy was set for June 5, 1944, but it actually occurred on June
6. Therefore, D-Day, as it applies to Overlord, is June 6, 1944.
