Doing more with less – it’s often the way of the modern business world, the communications industry and your work environment. It’s what we are regularly asked to figure out how to do and to help our customers with doing. The dialog of the day might go something like this:Leader - “Do more with less, please”. Empowered leader - “Okay boss I get it, I’ll tow the new rope too.”Leader - “And don’t forget, quality is job one and oh yes, the customer is the most important person in our business.”Empowered leader - “Wow. All these things better fit well together.”Leader - “Ok, yes, make sure they fit well together.” It is an interesting role that we have as telecom professionals in today’s society- provide tools that truly give our customers the ability to do more with less. - provide products that build revenue streams by making bandwidth faster, more reliable, more manageable and less expensive.

When customers win with our products and services they are more informed, more productive and more collaborated. Each of these three benefits has tremendous workplace and societal implications:

Informed - The more informed we each are, the more accountable we are for rapid decision making. The knowledge worker provides greater value to his/her organization. The requirement for critical thinking at every level is magnified.

Productive - As voice, data and video travel at light speed and then wait for us in our mobile workplace, we’ve moved the process bottleneck closer to people, to ourselves. Companies are able to leverage more volume per associate for profit, reinvestment and competitiveness.

Collaborated - Consumers can now transceive voices, messages and full motion images the world over. This creates incredible possibilities for subscribers who not only want to learn but need to share

experiences and act on common resolve. In 2011, we see healthy political changes across the globe made possible with high speed mobile data and new social networking applications laid on top. Call it innovation. Call it hard work. Call it a blessing.

One indicator of great collaboration and competitiveness is company longevity. If you are like many of Walker’s 2000+ clients, you’ve been around for a long time and you’ve been a Walker customer for a long time. Thanks to you, 2010 (our 40th year) was very productive for Walker.

While we grew in target markets, we also:• reduced our operating expenses as a percentage of increased sales• expanded our strategic supplier base (especially in routers, WDM, network access)• expanded our information technology (our own cloud) capacity.

Recently, we have:• added to our engineering competency and capacity• enhanced our integration and installation services offer• added to our purchasing capacity• improved our order processing speed at core and user levels.

That’s all very important to you, because as we improve, so do our capabilities that serve you. We are here to translate your desires into better results for you. How about lower capital expenditures per megabit and higher operating profit per customer? We do it for you with three valuable services:• adept technology selections• dependable supply logistics• reliable network deployments.

We believe you will find that Walker provides our industry’s best help with these functions. We hope that you would expect nothing less of us as we embrace the benefits made possible by the very technology we provide.

This change of ours; it’s a good thing - close to home and far away. Feel good that your work has significant, positive implications. Let’s make more dreams reachable in 2011.

Innovation is more than gener-ating new ideas. Far

more than simply being creative, innovation requires the disci-pline to transform new ideas into products and processes that create valued results. With an eye on what customers actually

value, Walker and Associates has taken innovation to its logical conclusions for telecom network profes-

sionals.

Traditional approaches in the telecommu-nications industry stopped working years ago. The notion that “if it ain’t broke, don’t break it” gave way to new think-ing that required everyone to evaluate business models from the perspective “if it ain’t broke, break it!” Sticking with comfort zones is absolutely deadly.

As a start up company in the early 1970’s, Walker and Associates learned

early the value of listening to customers and working to understand their unique needs. Manufacturers took notice of their quest for matching inventory and pro-

cesses with customer interests, and they responded with stronger relationships that

added even more value to Walker’s proposition. With a strong commitment to customer service, Walker approached business decisions based on a simple premise - “how does it benefit the customer?” The

answer to this basic question became the solution as a new business evolved into a competitor in a rapidly chang-

ing industry. Now, over forty years later, only a few things have really changed.

Recent experience indicates that the rate at which technologies shift will continue to accelerate, requiring businesses within the telecommunications industry to adapt quickly to customer needs for more advanced services and features. How can customers keep up? Partnering with a distribution partner like Walker can make a strategic difference.

Change management remains a strong component of Walker’s skill set. In fact, they plan ahead for change by working closely with the manufacturer community. They simply won’t allow our customers to be caught off guard as new features and products are released. Their engineering and sales associates receive regular, ongoing training direct from manufacturers, which imme-diately translates into additional customer impacting benefits. By staying current on upgrades and changes, Walker is in a position to offer even more value. Whether thinking about price changes, part number changes, or even product lines that are going into obsolescence, Walker makes certain customers’ direct points of

contact are educated and current on the most important issues.

Embracing technology enhancements be-came a mainstay for Walker by the mid 1990’s when they partnered with People-Soft ERP system. Today they are an Oracle powerhouse complete with developers and database analysts who constantly intro-duce unique solutions to enhance customer relationships.

Among other things, Walker’s internal tal-ent developed customized reporting tools to increase productivity for specific custom-ers. They have also enhanced features on EBusiness to add to customer productivity. With a belief that “one size doesn’t fit all” Walker tailors features that maximize re-lationships and set customers up for even greater success.

In response to customer demands for broader ranges of services from their distri-bution partners, Walker and Associates re-mains committed to adapting to a growing list of needs. Their Customer Asset Man-agement Program (CAMP), for example, provides unique opportunities to customize experiences with Walker. Offering every-thing from barcoding to virtual warehous-ing, CAMP maximizes customer resources in ways that directly impact their business’s bottom line.

In recent years Walker has expanded its EFI&T capabilities in order to respond more efficiently to a growing need for services that extend well beyond the basic distribu-tion model. From coast to coast they have assisted customers with site surveys, pro-vided full project management services, fa-cilitated the integration of equipment from

multiple manufacturers, and then turned up service following detailed testing. Customer feedback affirms that their commitment to quality, experience and attention to detail.

Seeing beyond the curve also led Walker to pursue TL certification, which was officially granted in August, 2008. Annual internal, external and customer audits demonstrate Walker’s ongoing commitment to quality standards that serve its customer base well.

Innovation in people, partnerships, prod-ucts, and processes make Walker and As-sociates an industry leader. Rather than focusing on only one problem presented by customers, Walker employs a holistic approach to discover ways customers can improve important measurables that drive

such things as ROI, ARPU, and EBITDA. Carriers realize, however, that their custom-ers are not concerned with those results. They are concerned about things like ser-vice continuity, service quality, service offer-ings and competitive pricing. Walker allows carriers to focus on those basics. Their tatic is to focuses on their customers, so those customers can focus on their customers. The results are measurable.

Sure, Walker and Associates could simply be a distributor, but how predictable is that! Walker is committed to thinking out of the box and into YOUR network. Improving on 99.9% AccuracyImproving Customer Service Through Technology Enhancements

By Debbie Berrier and Magnus AndersenIT Department, Walker and Associates

“This implementation has doubled productivity in

shipping.”

Walker and Associates is fortunate to have a dedicated and conscientious warehouse staff that goes above and beyond every day to provide exemplary customer service and 99.9% shipping accuracy. So, you might ask “How do you improve on 99.9%”?

You do it by increasing productivity and sys-tems accuracy for warehouse associates. In conjunction with HighJump Software Solutions, Walker automated shipping in its NC warehouse. All shipments that pass through the shipping system are now auto-matically shipped in PeopleSoft via mes-sage agent without any human intervention. To quote Greg Crotts, the NC warehouse facility manager, “This implementation has doubled productivity in shipping”.

Background on Walker’s ERP System On August 2, 1999 Walker and Associ-ates implemented PeopleSoft 7.5 Distribu-tion package. This system has been the backbone for processing its business for over ten years. Internal IT associates have successfully built web front ends for many modules that have improved functionality for users in various areas of the company. Warehouse processes, however, remained basically unchanged since 1999. In early 2007, the decision was made to review warehouse capabilities and identify how to improve order processing. After much re-search Walker’s Database Analyst, Magnus Andersen, recommended HighJump Soft-ware Solutions. HighJump Software, a 3M division, is ware-house management and data collection software. David Tilsen with HighJump, along with a HighJump contractor, was in charge of HighJump services. Walker was also assisted by Matthew Taylor, with CSS International, Inc. Matt is a PeopleSoft consultant who worked with the PeopleSoft message agent interface.

Magnus Andersen took the lead internally and redesigned the PeopleSoft delivered picking plan and packing slip from SQR re-ports into Crystal 11. The pick plan is bar-coded and the barcode holds the order data, allowing the warehouse personnel to scan them for processing. The packing slips are now automatically generated and at a much faster rate than has ever been achievable before. The new packing slips are bar-cod-

ed as well, so they can be scanned by cus-tomers upon receipt. There is also a new, improved interface for shipping label gen-eration. Heath Robertson, Walker Network Administrator, was instrumental in this proj-ect, working on the shipping system inter-faces and assisting Magnus Andersen with the overall project plan. All data supplied by the message agent was tested for accuracy and thorough PeopleSoft testing was done from order entry all the way through to gen-eral ledger posting.

Walker has now implemented additional HighJump modules; one that processes re-ceiving from a hand held scanner and one for automation and standardization of data collection. This provides the foundation for capturing and storing data, such as serial numbers, in Oracle for use on reports, web-pages, and printed documents. Magnus Andersen and Heath Robertson co-ordinat-ed these additional implementations with our warehouse management.

These projects not only provide a great foundation for the future but also enable warehouse associates to process orders faster. Likewise, they refine Walker’s ship-ping accuracy, thus succeeding on a ship-ping accuracy of 99.9%.

Whether you are deploying VoIP, SIP trunks, or managed and hosted services, Walker and Associates has a solution that will make your service deployment much easier. Our Customer Asset Management Program (CAMP) offers a variety of options that your company can choose from to meet your needs. We manage your assets from inventory staging to customer deployment to handling customer churn. Your Regional Account Manager will walk you through your options and customize your solution.

We begin with warehouse management of your asset. Walker has an expansive ware-house where you will have a specific area designated for your company. You can view that inventory twenty-four hours a day using our online tools. You can review purchase orders and the status of your orders online as well.

Once you are ready to deploy that product to a customer for service delivery, simply provide a release order. This can be sub-mitted online along with configuration infor-mation. That configuration then follows the order and is loaded onto your equipment. Configuration services are available for an IP phone, IAD, Router, Switch, IP PBX, IP Business Gateway, or any combination of units. Our configurations include the follow-ing:

• Basic Configuration --- customer sup-plies the WAN, LAN, Default Gateway and DNS IP information and we build the configuration and load on the product

• Global Configuration --- customer sup-plies their basic configuration and we input the unique IP Address Scheme

• Advanced Configuration --- in addition to the Basic Configuration information, additional Advanced Routing Proto-cols (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP) or Voice, Frame-Relay, NAT, VPN, Access-Lists or any other type of customer specific requirement is loaded on the product.

Once the configuration is loaded and test-ed, then your product is packaged. We can place a custom label on the package, or ship a combination of items together as kit. A kit might include an IP PBX and five IP phones, for example.

Since tracking of assets is important to your company, CAMP provides a full range of services to assist you with labeling and data management. We scan the serial number(s) from the packages and record them in our system along with the configuration for your order. This asset record is accessible 24/7/365 using CAMP’s online tools, along with all of your invoices and their status.

The order will then be shipped and you can track it via our online tools.

If for some reason you experience cus-tomer churn you can count on Walker to perform reconditioning for redeployment. We will receive the displaced unit into our warehouse, recondition the unit, test it, provide the proper packaging, load a new configuration, and then redeploy the unit to another customer. All of this happens and your company never has to handle the equipment.

Walker has been performing value added services for over twenty years. We have migrated from simple kits, to multi-vendor integrated bays, to performing these con-figuration services. We move with the mar-ket through technology advancements. We also listen to our customers when it comes to fulfilling their needs. The greatest ben-efits of using Walker CAMP services are re-ducing your craft and technical personnel, tracking customer deployed assets, cor-recting poor material handling issues, re-ducing staging area/warehouse space, and providing JIT customer deployment for ser-vice turn up. Contact your local Regional Account Manager to discuss your custom-ized solution options today.

Timely deployment of network infrastructure is critical to success. Managing all the variables of ordering, receiving, unpackaging, separating, counting individual components, then repackaging and labeling these items for delivery to the specific project it’s all designated for - well, you get the idea. It can be a real challenge!

Walker and Associates has been assisting customers for years by managing these tasks for them. Customers build their own bill of materials and then Walker creates one “part number”. When orders are placed by the customer, Walker breaks out the bill of material and then packages the individual components into single shipments to locations specified by the customer.

Examples of “kits” can range from small boxes of screws, nuts, bolts and tie wraps, to entire pallet loads of hardware equipment for tower sites, collocations, data centers, etc. The possibilities really are endless. The savings are incredible.

Imagine the value gained by issuing single line-item purchase orders, receiving one shipment for the order, as well as receiving only one invoice from one vendor for all the materials you’ve placed into a kit, freeing up your AP resources to make one payment. Add to that the storage space and budget dollars you’ve saved for other projects in replacement of kits stored at Walker’s warehouse. In addition, consider the simple solution of logging onto your Walker EBusiness account and releasing orders from your own PO’s to your designated destinations. Your online inventory is available to you 24/7 at www.walkerfirst.com, and your account is free.Simple solutions. Compounded value! Additional values are related to the disposal of original packing materials at each of your remote sites. This can be of particular concern when a shipping destination lacks sufficiently available access to disposal units and services. While the waste won’t be completely eliminated, there is a definite reduction in the volume since the majority is managed by Walker in the kit processes. In your efforts to become more environmentally friendly, this can become a real advantage.

Over the years Walker’s warehouse has adopted environmentally friendly processes for disposal of waste, use of post original packaging, and recycling of materials in order to minimize environmental impacts.

Who is performing these tasks for you now? An employee whose talents can be put to greater use during their workday? More than likely they are too expensive a resource to be counting out small pieces for important projects Or, perhaps you’re doing it yourself. What could you be doing that is more strategic than completing that task yourself? Either way, you’re certain to find more productivity, and cost savings, while using Walker’s resources and processes for handling these kits.

Contact us today with your own list of materials and give us a chance to provide you a customized solution for your projects. See for yourself how the savings - and the benefits - can add up. Learn more at http://www.walkerfirst.com/custom-kitting/.

“Walker has always fundamentally operated to ensure customer requirements are met . . . “

In the summer of 2008, Walker and Associ-ates, Inc. was awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification. This is an internationally recog-nized quality management system standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

“Walker and Associates is intently focused on providing the best, highest quality prod-ucts and solutions for our customers and their businesses - and on continuously working to improve how we deliver on that promise,” said Lorie Loman, Quality Coor-dinator at Walker. “Achieving ISO certifica-tion demonstrates the entire Walker team’s remarkable commitment to quality.”

ISO 9001:2000 applies to organizations involved in the design and development, manufacturing, installation, and servicing of products. To be certified to the standard, companies must implement a comprehen-sive quality management system that ad-dresses all areas of operation - from internal staff training practices to product design, manufacturing, delivery, and service.

External auditors with Bizphyx, Inc., the world’s leading quality management sys-tems registrar, visited Walker and Associ-ates headquarters in June 2008 and spent several days conducting a comprehensive audit. Auditors examined all of Walker’s

business and quality systems, including product development processes, materials documentation practices, and measurement systems for tracking customer satisfaction and supplier performance.

Walker successfully completed the audit, and was officially ISO-certified in August, 2008. The ISO certification process ensures ongoing compliance because, once certi-fied, companies are externally audited every six months. The certification applies to the Welcome, NC headquarters, the sales office in Milton, GA and the warehousing facility, located in Winston-Salem, NC.

Throughout its over 40 year history in the telecommunications industry, Walker has al-ways fundamentally operated to ensure cus-tomer requirements are met while maintain-ing a focus on process improvement among its associates. Hal Sveum, General Man-ager and VP of Operations at Walker and Associates, commented that “TL9000 certifi-cation is held now by most of our key manu-facturers. The industry’s customer base has been gradually requiring this certification in order to do business with them.” As a result, Walker and Associates has determined it part of its strategy to pursue this important level of certification, ensuring customers of measures taken to reach its mission state-ment.

Inventory of High Demand Materials - Today’s marketplace is all about providing timely service to telecom service subscribers. You can’t afford to miss commitments you’ve made to your customers. Walker and Associates is a stocking distributor of the highest running materials for telecom carriers, with more than 155,000 square feet of warehouse space. Using industry standard forecasting models, we strive to have the right equipment at the right time.

Manufacturer Relationships - Walker and Associates has direct relationships with the major manufacturers of leading-edge telecommunications equipment. Their confidence in us is affirmed year over year as we maintain high performance standards in service, technical training, sales and customer relationships. We are recognized by many as their number one channel in the marketplace.

Variety of Services - Your business doesn’t survive on just one solution. Your best choice in a logistics services company offers you more than simply distribution of product. Walker and Associates offers customized inventory management, engineering, installation and testing services, creation of customized network deployment kits and customized cable assemblies just to name a few. One size doesn’t fit all!

Inventory Management - The reason you invest in inventory is to provide you the opportunity either to turn it into a revenue stream or to maintain existing customer relationships. How do you maximize these investments? Take advantage of Walker’s ability to manage your inventory through virtual warehousing programs or via our on-line tools that allow you to release inventory based on your needs.

Location - Effective logistics partners know that their location is critical to their customer’s success. While that doesn’t mean they need to be in your same geographical area, it does mean they need access to multiple forms of national transportation resources. Walker’s warehouse is located 30 minutes from a new state-of-the-art FedEx hub in central NC, with immediate access to multiple interstate highways.

On-line Tools - Our customers are accustomed to doing business when and where it’s convenient and necessary. Traditional business hours mean very little in a business climate subject to changes based on weather, customer behaviors and shifts in business objectives. Our eBusiness site provides immediate real-time access to inventory, purchase histories, back orders, open purchase orders and more. Check it out today at www.walkerfirst.com.

Customer Service - Friendly, competent, knowledgeable, proactive - just a few of the words customers have used to describe any number of associates they’ve interacted with at Walker. Our philosophy for 40 years has been “The focus of everyone in our company is the needs of the customer.” We know you only deliver the highest levels of service to your own customers. You deserve the same level of professionalism.

Competitive Product Pricing - With strong manufacturer relationships, associates who negotiate the best deals, effective processes to control operating costs, and a location selected to provide exceptional delivery options, we pride ourselves on offering the most competitive pricing available for the products and services we make available in the marketplace.

Certified Processes - Logistics services are all about establishing, maintaining and measuring processes for their ability to deliver expected deliverable. From responding to requests for pricing and availability to issuing invoices, we continually examine our process to make sure they meet and exceed expectations. We understand the full business cycle and apply innovative solutions to the challenges you encounter. More than just equipment - we distribute solutions through best practices of supply chain management, all validated by ISO and TL9000 certifications.

Experience - Today, it is possible for nearly anyone to sell products, whether new or used. These virtual start ups offer few of the real value-added, low risk services your business relies on. Can you really afford to risk your customer satisfaction levels or the stability of your network with someone based solely on low price? Experience and the depth of relationships within the industry are critical and can mean the difference between success and failure. With over 40 years of experience, Walker and Associates remains committed to the industry and the carriers delivering solutions to their own customer base.

My AdTrAn® Connect StoryMy name is Paul Lipscomb. I am a pediatrician and I became a doctor to help

people. One of my biggest challenges is being accessible to patients not only

during normal office hours but for after-hour emergencies. When an emergency

call comes in can be as simple as a concerned parent needing reassurance, or it can

be something critical when seconds matter. And it’s my job to find a solution.

Today, I’m proud to say that NetVanta® UC is part of my solution. When that

late night emergency call comes in, a parent can leave a detailed message of

their child’s situation. The NetVanta UC system immediately rolls their voice

mail message to myself, or the doctor on duty. We get the message via our cell

phones, text message, or email. That allows us to call right away and give us the

ability to assess their situation and provide fast, accurate feedback.

The NetVanta UC system also allows me to operate without the expensive “after

hours” answering service. I can now say, I can save lives and save money at the

same time. NetVanta UC helps me and my patients sleep better at night.

My AdTrAn Connect StoryMy name is Gwen Talbert. I’m a Product Manager, and I oversee how we

package and deliver our Ethernet service - both, E-LAN and E-tree -

and then ensure we hit our profit margins.

It’s a juggling act, working to comply with customer requirements and market

trends, hitting critical deadlines and synching the rollout process. There’s a lot of

competition out there. One dropped ball could mean losing a lot of customers.

We need more bandwidth than ever and ADTRAN has proven we can

depend on them. They not only get what we do, they get what I do.

They’ve made my job easier, and our company stronger, by giving us scalable

solutions. That means the latest and best solutions added to the same platform

we’ve built our bandwidth on. Our customers get smooth rollouts and fewer

glitches. We get the profitability we need to keep growing our business.

Some networking companies sell you a box and say “Good luck with that.”

With ADTRAN, we’ve found someone who is invested in our success. And

when you’re competing in this kind of market, that kind of support can

make all the difference in the world.

and then ensure we hit our profit margins.

My name is Gwen Talbert, and that’s my ADTRAN story
