            Happy Holidays to all of my brothers and sisters!             Well this is the end of another great year in Elkdom.  The holidays are           here and it’s  me for another busy month.             Our first event this month is our Memorial Service on December 2nd.           This will be an open mee ng, so  I hope all will be able to a end. Our           biggest event of the year is Christmas Tree Lane, which is held on            Friday, December 5th and Saturday, December 6th..   Get your  ckets           and help support this great event.  Congratula ons and thank you to all           of the Christmas Tree Lane commi ee members who have worked so           hard to put this great event together this year.    The Christmas Ball dinner dance will be held on December 20th.  I have a great evening planned and hope all can a end.  The last major event for the year will be the New Year’s Eve dinner dance on December 31st. I hope you will all join me for dinner, dancing and fun to bring in the new year.   Don’t forget to mark calendars for Karaoke on the 12th of December and to come down to the Lodge on Friday nights for fun in the sports lounge.   A special thanks goes out to the a ernoon pool players who paid to have the snooker table moved into the new sports bar.  This group of guys paid to have this table moved at there own expense for all to enjoy.  Your ER thanks you!    I have two things to do before my Elk year is over.  The first is to pay the Lodge back for helping put the sports lounge together. You will find a water bo le at the bar in the sports lounge and when it is full my mission will be complete.  Second, I’m  planning my end of the year party.   We’re going out west, so start dus ng off your western gear and get ready to swing your partner round and round.  This evening will be one to remember!   So enjoy the holidays!  Come down to the Lodge and support as many events as you can.  I forgot to men on!   The Lodge is the place to be on Christmas Eve.  We are having our Annual Holiday Cheer Party, this is when all old friends meet for Christmas cheer.

We have just returned from the Mid‐term conference of the California‐Hawaii Elks Associa on in Sacramento, and it was interes ng and informa ve as always.  Some mes it seems we learn as much in group sessions away from the planned mee ngs as we do in those planned mee ngs.  Our District hospitality suite was in the hotel where our district lodges were housed, which unfortunately was a mile or so from the main conven on hotel.  It did allow us to discuss issues and ac vi es within the district rather than just state‐wide issues addressed in the official sessions.  

One item of interest was noted on a topic that many members probably are not aware of.  There has been an Elks Na onal Home in Virginia for many years, subsidized by all members with a fee included

in the Grand Lodge per capita we all pay.  That home has been sold and we will no longer be suppor ng, so our Grand Lodge per capita will be slightly lower for that purpose, but will be higher because of the court case against a Lodge in Pennsylvania which resulted in a very large mul ‐million dollar se lement.  That case resulted in our liability insurance premiums being increased considerably and thus the per capita increase.  Overall it will not be a significant change, but will show in our next dues billing.  

On the social and fun side, PLEASE come down on at least one night of Christmas Tree Lane, and par cipate in the tree raffle.  This is a major fund raising effort for the Lodge, as well as being two very fun evenings.  The Christmas Ball and New Year’s Eve party are coming up this month as well, so join in on the fes vi es and support your Lodge at the same  me.  

The Building Commi ee is s ll wai ng for “best and final” offers from developers who have previously submi ed offers on Lodge property.  The commi ee will evaluate the offers along with our advisors, and submit a selec on to the members for approval.  We feel that at that point ac vity related to the property, including nego a ons with the City, will accelerate.

Well what can I say.  December is a month full of lively entertainment for all.  Star ng with our big event, Christmas Tree Lane, December 5 & 6.  Then followed with our Christmas Ball, Children’s Party, Holiday Cheer Party and New Year’s Eve Party.  Something for everyone!    Happy Holidays to all and have a safe New Year’s.                 ~Al Mirth

Dear Elk Family,  

I sincerely hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving.  But now December brings us a month of many more holiday ac vi es at our Lodge. First of which is our Elks Memorial Service on December 2nd. At this dignified service we honor our departed members. “An Elk is never forgo en, never forsaken”.  

Then right into “CHRISTMAS TREE LANE “ weekend. We will be having dinner and dances all weekend Both Friday and Saturday nights, December 5th & 6th  

Sunday, December 7th is Pearl Harbor Day, so please remember the American flag is to be at half‐staff un l sundown.   

The Excep onal Children’s Party will be on Wednesday, December 10th.  I understand the Santa Ana Elks will have a NEW Santa this year. Come on down and see if you can bribe Santa with a Bacardi and Diet Coke (no lime) and see what you might find in your stocking on Christmas.  

Our E.R., Mike Hobbs, will be hos ng the Christmas Ball on Saturday, December 20th. This should be a great dinner dance night with the “Street Corner Symphony” band.  

For some of you newer members that have never a ended the Holiday Cheer Party, try to come by. It is a very casual holiday get together the a ernoon before Christmas. It is a perfect way to wind down a er the holiday shopping madness. It is usually a small family style gathering.  Come by and try some eggnog between 1:00 & 3:00 pm.  

Our Lodge will be closed the following week and re‐open with the New Years Eve Party on Wednesday, December 31st.  

   

 Dear Fellow Elkends,  I hope everyone had a great Thanks‐Giving!!  Did you eat enough turkey ? I know I did!  Family and friends made the day.  Christmas  me is here and  me for lots of Joy & Cheer!  Christmas trees are all decorated for Christmas Tree Lane, so come on down and “win” a beau ful tree.  The Elks Children's Party is on December 6th.  Bring them kids down to meet Santa!  Then we have the Excep onal Children’s Party on December 10th.  WOW, this event is so special for these kids.  The Joy on their faces when they see Santa Claus is “Priceless”.  Makes you remember what Christmas  me is really all about.  New Years is just about here!   I thank everyone who helped make this Lodge a happy place.  It’s been a Fun year for me ...  I toast to you ALL!  Christmas is not a  me nor a season, but a state of mind.  To cherish Peace and Goodwill, to be Plenteous in Mercy, is to have the real Spirit of Christmas.             Let’s Be Naughty and Save Santa a Trip!               Lecturing Knight, Patrick Kuykendall

What You Need to Know about Your Will  

A will provides the peace of mind that comes from planning to pass on the fruits of your life's labor to your loved ones. Without a will, the probate court will decide how your assets are to be distributed and, if minor children are involved, with whom they will live.  

What Is a Will?  A will is a legal declara on that enables you to direct the disposi on of your assets upon your death. Assets covered by a will include tangible assets, such as your home and your car, and intangible assets, such as bank accounts and mutual fund shares in your name. Other rights and benefits, such as insurance proceeds and pension rights, typically are paid directly to your designated beneficiaries and are handled outside of your will.  

Generally speaking, a will includes the following items: 

Your full name 

Statement that the document is a will 

The date A statement revoking all previous wills 

Specific bequests to transfer par cular pieces of property to a named beneficiary 

A general bequest, which does not specify from which part of the estate the property is taken, including provisions for the death of the named beneficiaries 

Name of a trust beneficiary, if applicable 

Names of guardians and alternates for minor children, if necessary 

Names of the executor and subs tute executor 

Your signature, cer fied by two witnesses who do not have a connec on to the will  

Dra ing a Will  ‐  Ideally, your will should be drawn up by a lawyer and your heirs, if possible, should be familiar with its general form and contents. Many legal professionals recommend separate wills for husbands and wives since it is difficult to establish who owns which property in a joint will. If you have young children, an important provision is the selec on of a guardian who would raise your children in the event of your death and the death of your spouse.  

Choosing an Executor  ‐  When you create a will, you must also choose an executor who ensures that the se lement of your estate is properly administered upon your death. This can either be a trusted friend or an ins tu on, such as a bank or a law firm, with the necessary exper se.  

Don't Leave Things to Chance  ‐  Much is made in life of the things we can't live without. Li le is made of the things you can't die without. While it's unpleasant to contemplate the thought of your own demise, it's very sa sfying to know that you've put your financial house in order.

  Hi to my Elks,     It’s hard to believe that this year is just about over and we can look forward to finishing out our term for 2014‐2015.   

Last month we par cipated jointly with our fellow Elks with the gently used shoe program. We are thrilled that we made our goal of 1500 lbs. of shoes. Yeah!  

Our Dessert Sales are moving to the 1st and 3rd Wednesday’s.  Sales are down, so we are hoping this will help.  Thank you to all who support Emblem with our dessert sales.  

We par cipated in Elks Veteran’s Ceremony at the open mee ng on November 11th.  Thank you to all Emblem members who par cipated in the “MIA” Missing In Ac on program.  

At our November mee ng, we held our Annual Eileen Yeandle Veterans Underwear Shower.  The many pairs of underwear for men and women were sent to the Long Beach Veterans Hospital.  

This year, Emblem par cipated in Christmas Tree Lane and purchased a tree.  Our theme is Teddy Bears.  Our members also helped sell the  ckets.   

Many of our Emblem members will a end the Christmas Tree Lane dinner dance on December 6th.   We will have our President’s Party at Shirley Echternacht’s home on December 7th .  Thank you Shirley and Dee Wilkie for  hos ng this event.    On December 21st we are having our Newport Harbor Cruise.  This is a wonderful event that starts off with a nice dinner at Roma D’Italia and then off to Newport Beach to view all the beau fully decorated homes.  If you are interested in a ending, Valerie Fisher is handling this event.   Have a Blessed and Merry Christmas.          Love, Roberta Ninichuck, President

The Purple Pig RV Rally in Hemet was a great success and was enjoyed by the Santa Ana Nomads.  Needless to say, we par cipated in great catered meals, games, raffles, shopping, and everything else that was available.  All proceeds went to the Purple Pig, so we could shop, eat, and play with NO GUILT!  

All the Nomads are looking forward to Christmas Tree Lane, especially since our own Joyce Bryant and crew (most are Nomads) create most of the beau ful trees.  Our annual Holiday Party is on the horizon, and we are planning trips into 2015 to Lake Elsinore, Laughlin, and Santa Maria.    

If your camper or RV is spending too much  me in storage, be sure to come out and join us for a mee ng and an ou ng!   Nomads meet the fourth Thursday of each month (except December) at the Lodge; 6:30 pm for dinner and 7:30 for the mee ng.

Scholarship News December 2014  

The Scholarship Commi ee will be judging applica ons for the Most Valuable Student (MVS) awards on Saturday, December 13.  Judges will be choosing the top three boys and top three girls from the many fine applica ons received by our 

Lodge. Applica ons are due at the Lodge by 5 pm on Friday, December 5, 2014.      The awards for the 1st  , 2nd and 3rd place winners will be:   1st place:  (1 boy, 1 girl)        $1500 each     Total‐ $3000   2nd place: (1 boy, 1 girl)        $1250 each     Total‐ $2500   3rd place:  (1 boy, 1 girl)        $1000 each     Total‐ $2000  

The results of the judging will be published in the January, 2015 Elkhorn.  

Funds for the MVS Scholarships come from proceeds from our Monday Night Bingo games. Thank you to the volunteers who dedicate their  me and energy to this charitable event. Volunteers to help at Bingo are always needed. Please consider volunteering.  

The following deadlines are important for any student wishing to apply for the Legacy, Lenz or Santa Ana #794 Scholarships:   January 9, 2015 @ 5:00 PM  ‐  Lenz Scholarship applica ons due. 

Eligibility is limited to current high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of members of our Lodge. 

February 6, 2015 @ 5:00 PM  ‐  Santa Ana #794 Scholarship applica ons due. These are for students who are freshmen or higher in an accredited college or university. Applicants may be a MEMBER, or a child or a grandchild of a member of our Lodge.   

January 30, 2015 @ Noon  ‐  Legacy Scholarship applica ons due online. These scholarships are available to current high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of an Elk member from any lodge in the country. 

 (Please note: Associate membership does not qualify for our local lodge scholarships.)    Thank you to Abby Estacion for his generous contribu ons to the scholarship fund in memory of Don Braun and Jimmy Bontemple.  Abby, your support is greatly appreciated.

            We hope that by now all of you have had a chance to see our              uplights in ac on at one of our events and in the Lounge.               We recently repaired the mini lights in the parking lot walkway, and planted a few flowers in the pa o garden.  Be sure to take a See’s Candy brochure next  me you’re at the Lodge, fill it out and leave it at the office with your payment info.  Our most popular items last year were:  1 pound boxes of Nuts and Chews, Assorted Light and Dark Chocolates, and the cute Snowman boxes, perfect for the grandkids.  Delivery will be December 15, so get your orders in by DECEMBER 10.  Remember, this is a fundraiser.  We pay the sales tax.
