THE LOVERS FOUNTAINThis unassuming fountain is often overlooked by its grander and more famous neighbour, the Trevi Fountain. During the First and Second World Wars couples would visit the fountain before a soldier left for the frontline. The tearful “signorina” would fill a glass from the fountain which her lover would drink. The glass would then be broken to symbolise their love which, unlike the glass, could never be broken.

THE TOWER OF THE MONKEYAn age-old tale relates that in the 17th century a pet monkey kidnapped a child and carried it to the top of the Frangipane Tower, a medieval fortress located a stone’s throw from Piazza Navona. The father of the child called upon the Blessed Virgin for help and the monkey promptly clambered down, delivering the infant to safety. By way of thanks, the man erected a shrine to the Virgin, which you can still see at the top of the tower accompanied by a glowing lamp that is to this day kept constantly burning.

LAPIS SCANDALIThere was a stone raised in the great portal of the Capitol in ancient Rome engraved with the figure of a lion. All those who went bankrupt went and sat there nude. They were made to cry aloud “Cedo Bona” (I surrender my effects) and then to strike the stone three times with their posteriors. Then it was no longer permitted to trouble them over their debts.Read the full text on the website

SUMMER IN FIUMICINO The annual summer festival promoted by the Fiumicino City Council returns with a dynamic line-up of more than 180 events. VIA GIULIALaid out by Bramante during the reign of Julius II, this half-mile-long cobbled street is one of the first important urban planning projects in Renaissance Rome. Built in the early 16th century, it runs in a straight line following the tight curve of the Tiber. Today its modest structures provide one of Rome’s elite shopping streets with an extraordinary array of monuments such as the Farnese Arch, the Fountain of the Mask and the small Armenian church.

2017 SERVICE CHARTEROn the Aeroporti di Roma website you can download the 2017 Service Charter along with the Airport Guide, a handbook that provides useful information for passengers travelling through the airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino. The ADR Service Charter implements the ENAC (Italian Civil Aviation Authority) regulations and proposes quality indicators for each passenger type, with the aim of providing information on the level of quality achieved and on the improvement objectives for 2017. adr.it

Easy Parking is pleased to an-nounce two secure and reliable parking options for those who wish to leave their car at Fiumici-no whilst on holiday. Starting today, passengers looking for an affordable and comfortable solution can take ad-vantage of the airport’s new covered long-term parking lot equipped with a sophisticated photovoltaic roof system (parking capacity of 1,600). On the other hand, travellers looking

New long-term parking facilities

for a cheaper alternative can opt for the uncovered, fully outdoor, long-term parking area with a capacity of 2,100 car stalls. Both options feature state-of-the-art security cameras, 24-hours custom-er support and high frequency shuttle services to/from the airport’s Terminals with methane-fueled, air-conditioned vehicles (departures every 5 minutes). But there’s more: drivers who will use their Telepass (electronic motorway toll collection) device to enter the parking facilities will have their stays converted into “MilleMiglia” points, Alitalia’s fre-quent-flyer program allowing passen-gers to collect miles and redeem them with free tickets. For further information please visit www.adr.it or download the new Aeroporti di Roma official APP.adr.it/parcheggi-fiumicino

If you have a new biometric “chipped” passport and you’re trav-elling through Italy and other EU countries, you can use the automated e-passport gates instead of having your passport checked by a Border Force officer. This means you can avoid the queues and get through passport control more quickly. Leonardo da Vinci is the first Italian airport to have installed this new passport control equipment, which operates through a well-oiled synergy between the ADR management and the Italian Ministry of Interior. The e-gates

are an innovative technology which al-lows your passport to be checked in a totally automated way thanks to the mi-crochip on the hard cover of your docu-ment. They ensure the highest levels of security controls, and decrease passen-ger waiting times, improving the overall quality of the travel experience. Since the introdution of the first example in 2014, 5 million travellers have taken advantage of the new automated gates installed at the airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino with a 50% reduction in wait times compared to traditional controls.

The exhibition arises from an interest in comprehending the unique combi-nation of art and ideology that has accompanied the development of two of the largest Mediterranean civ-ilizations, the Etruscans and the ancient Egyptians. Two separate worlds connected by something that has always encouraged interaction between different cultures: the sea. Promoted by the Archaeological Su-perintendency for the Metropolitan Area of Rome, the Province of Viterbo and Southern Etruria, the exhibition showcases a stunning

selection of artifacts dating from different periods (from the 8th/7th century B.C. to the 3rd century B.C.), with a special focus on amulets and their magical powers. The dis-play includes some Egyptian objects found during major excavation campaigns at the Archaeological and Naturalistic Park of Vulci, as well as more than 240 items on loan from the Archaeological Museum in Florence and

works collected by Russian Neo-romantic painter Eugene Berman during his travels to Egypt between 1964 and 1965. The objec-tive of the exhibit is to raise public aware-ness on the importance of protecting cul-tural heritage, something that needs to be more and more accessible to large sections of the population. “Egyptians and Etruscans” runs until September 30 at the San Sisto

monumental complex in Montalto di Castro, a municipality in the Province of Viterbo lo-cated about 90 km northwest of Rome.
