(MS) — Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years ac-cording to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for college-bound students and their tuition-paying parents — especially if loans are part of the financial formula.
Even for those students who make it to graduation, there may be some question as to whether they made the most of their time on cam-pus.
As this Northern Michi-gan University senior re-flects, “There I was, about to graduate with some random degree and feeling like I’d wasted my parents money.”
And from a University of Florida senior: “The prob-lem with college is that you figure it out about the time you’re ready to graduate.”
Helping college students “figure it out” sooner rather than later is what the lat-est edition of the award-ing-winning “Been There, Should’ve Done That — 995+ Tips for Making the Most of College,” (Front Porch Press) continues to do. The 4th edition again draws from interviews with seasoned collegians across the U.S. According to au-thor, Suzette Tyler, a former academic adviser at Michi-gan State University, “their ‘expert’ advice is refreshing-ly insightful and often more encompassing than might be found in an adviser’s of-fice.”
“I could talk until I was blue in the face about things like time-management and self-discipline,” Tyler ex-plains, “but when a fellow student says, ‘I got great grades and I never missed a party and here’s how to do it,’ it has far more impact.
Here are some tips from ‘the experts’:
• “The first few weeks are great. You’re meeting people, partying ... no tests, no papers. Then ...WHAM! Everything’s due in the
College advice from the ‘experts’same week! If you weren’t hitting the books right along, you’ll spend the rest of the term digging yourself out!” - Senior, University of California, Santa Cruz
• “Gather all the syl-labi during the first week of classes and write down the due date for every single pa-per, project, test or whatev-er. You’ll see instantly which weeks are potential killers.” - Junior, Wake Forest
• “Sitting in a classroom is the easiest part of col-lege and it cuts study time in half. Why make it hard on yourself? GO!” - Senior, University of Iowa
• “What separated me from the masses was ‘con-necting’ with a faculty member. I didn’t even know what the possibilities were until he laid out a ‘roadmap’ and showed me a few short-cuts to get there. When my confidence was shaky, he re-minded me that I could do it.” - Graduate, University of Michigan.
• “Pick the professor, not
the time of day.” - Junior, Duke University
• “Get a job in the office of your major. You’ll get to know everyone from the secretaries to the dean, all of whom can be very helpful. If any great opportunities come along, you’ll be the first to know.” - Senior, Indi-ana University
• “There’s no reason to fail! There are people here to help and it’s free. Actu-ally, you’ve paid for it so you might as well use it.” - Senior, Michigan State Uni-versity
“The students who make the most of their college ex-perience aren’t necessarily the smartest ones. It’s often the average kids who know how to utilize the system, connect with the professors, take advantage of extracur-ricular activities, and man-age their time well who reap the rewards,” Tyler says. “Been There, Should’ve Done That” can help stu-dents get all they can out of the next four years.

The cost of college tuition is a concern for many college-bound stu-dents and their families. The cost of a college edu-cation continues to rise, but it’s not just tuition and room and board that students and their fami-lies must account for.
College students may underestimate cost-of-living expenses when planning their school-year budgets. But such expenses can be sub-stantial, catching even the most well-prepared students off guard. For-tunately, there are sev-eral ways for college stu-dents to save money on living expenses and still make the most of their time on campus.
• Venture off campus. Towns that rely heav-ily on colleges or uni-versities to support their economies typically offer great deals to students willing to venture off campus. Local business-es, including bars, res-taurants and entertain-
How college students can cut living expensesment venues like mini golf facilities or bowling alleys, may offer student discounts to entice kids to leave campus. Stu-dents can take advantage of these offerings to save on food and entertain-ment, which tend to be among the more pricey cost-of-living expenses college students contend with.
• Buy secondhand furnishings. College students living in their own apartments or dorm rooms may not have the financial resources to purchase new furniture. Rather than purchasing brand new items they are likely to discard after moving out or graduat-ing, college students can purchase secondhand items from local thrift stores or used furniture retailers that offer sturdy furnishings at low prices.
• Become a resident advisor. Resident advi-sors, often referred to as “R.A.’s,” typically receive free or reduced
room and board in ex-change for living in the dorms and monitoring the floors they live on. Competition to be an R.A. can be competi-tive, but students who become R.A.’s can save thousands of dollars on room and board costs over the course of their time at school.
• Make your own meals. Meal plans may be ideal for college students during their freshmen years, when students may still be ad-justing to campus life. But older college stu-dents can skip the meal plan in favor of prepar-ing their own meals. Do-ing so can save students substantial amounts of money, and some stu-dents may even prefer the variety available at the local grocery store.
• Move off campus. Some schools do not per-mit freshmen and sopho-mores to live off-campus, but older students may find that private housing is more affordable than on-campus apartments or dormitories.
Cost-of-living expens-es at colleges and uni-versities can be consider-able, but savvy students can find various ways to save money.
