On Baptism . . . In baptism, therefore, every Christian has enough to study and practice all his or her life. Christians always have enough to do to believe firmly what baptism prom-ises and brings—victory over death and the devil, forgiveness of sin, God’s grace, the entire Christ, and the Holy Spirit with his gifts. In short, the blessings of bap-tism are so boundless that if our timid nature considers them, it may well doubt whether they could all be true. Suppose there were a physician who had so much skill that people would not die, or even though they died would afterward live eternally. Just think how the world would snow and rain money upon such a per-son! Because of the throng of rich people crowding around, no one else would be able to get near. Now, here in baptism there is brought, free of charge, to every per-son’s door just such a treasure and medicine that swallows up death and keeps all people alive. Thus, we must regard baptism and put it to use in such a way that we may draw strength and comfort from it when our sins or conscience oppress us, and say, “But I am baptized!” ~ Martin Luther, Large Catechism

PROCESSIONAL HYMN “Crown Him with Many Crowns” green hymnal #170

GREETING P: Alleluia! Christ is risen! C: The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia! Alleluia!

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

KYRIE P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

P: For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord.

That He is risen and lives means that God has thwarted and undone our human work of Good Fri-day; the Cru-cified One died for us and God spoke His Amen to that. Now there is truly good news: “Christ was sacrificed for the sake of our sin and for the sake of our right-eousness was raised.” We have peace with God, for God Himself has spoken the last Word! ~ Martin

Niemoeller (German Lutheran pastor who was impris-oned by the Nazis), Easter, 1934 A.D.

P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the holy Church, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.

P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.

P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you.

P: Let us pray . . . Almighty God, merciful Father, since you have wakened from death the Shepherd of your sheep, grant us your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know him who calls us each by name and follow where he leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen Please be seated.

ing done through the apostles. 44And all who believed were to-gether and had all things in common. 45And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 2:19-25 19For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures

sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20For what credit is it if, when

you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good

and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of

God. 21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suf-

fered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in

his steps. 22He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his

mouth. 23When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he

suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to

him who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on

the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his

wounds you have been healed. 25For you were straying like sheep,

but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

The Lord leads us into whatever He himself ex-periences, pain and joy. This is what it means to be His disciple. ~ Pr. Scott

Bruzek, 2005 A.D.

VERSE

GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 10th chapter.

1[Jesus said,] “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the

sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a

thief and a robber. 2But he who enters by the door is the shepherd

of the sheep. 3To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his

voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the

sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5A stranger they will not

follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice

of strangers.” 6This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they

did not understand what he was saying to them. 7So Jesus again

said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did

not listen to them. 9I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be

saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10The thief comes

only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life

and have it abundantly.”

P: The Gospel of the Lord.

NICENE CREED P: Let us confess the faith with one heart:

C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of

heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from

Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Be-

ing with the Father. Through him all things were made. For

us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the

power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin

Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified un-

der Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the

third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he

ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and

the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who

proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and

the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken

through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and ap-

ostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgive-

ness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and

the life of the world to come. Amen

Please be seated.

That the bap-tism of in-fants is pleas-ing to Christ is sufficiently proved from his own work. God has sanc-tified many who have been thus baptized and has given them the Holy Spirit . . . . Further, we say, we do not put the main empha-sis on whether the person bap-tized believes or not, for in the latter case baptism does not become invalid. Eve-rything de-pends upon the Word and command-ment of God. ~ Martin Luther,

Large Catechism

HYMN OF THE DAY “The King of Love My Shepherd Is” green hymnal #456

SERMON “Holy Baptism, Part Four”

P: What does such baptizing with water indicate?

C: It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contri-

tion and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and

evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and

arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

P: Where is this written?

C: St. Paul writes in Romans chapter six: “We were therefore

buried with Him through baptism into death in order that,

just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of

the Father, we too may live a new life.”

Please stand. We do not kneel for prayer during the Easter season.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Standing in the glorious light of the resurrection, let us pray.

P: . . . O Lord of life,

C: hear our prayer.

P: Hear our prayers for the sake of Jesus Christ, our crucified and

risen Savior.

C: Amen

Please be seated.

Therefore baptism re-mains for-ever. Even though some-one falls from it and sins, we always have access to it so that we may again subdue the old creature. But we need not have the water poured over us again. Even if we were im-mersed a hundred times, it would never-theless not be more than one baptism, and the effect and signifi-cance would continue and remains . . . . Therefore let all Christians regard their baptism as the daily gar-ment that they are to wear all the time. ~ Large Catechism

WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when he was betrayed,

took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me.”

In the same way also he took the cup after the supper, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in my blood,

which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink of it, in remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy

kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our tres-passes, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

ACCLAMATION P: This is the feast of victory for our God. C: Alleluia!

If, then, you want to know from Christ Himself, who instituted this Supper, who is Truth itself, and whom the Father com-mended to us from heaven to hear, what it is that is present in the Supper in, with, and under the bread and wine, and that is offered by the hand of the minister and received by the mouth of the body, He answers expressly, clearly, and plainly: This is My body, which is given for you; this is My blood, which is shed for you. ~ Martin

The congregation is ushered forward for Communion. If you cannot use the steps to the altar, you may either ask an usher to have Communion brought to you, or you may go to the altar in the side (west) chapel. Those not communing may cross their arms over their chest for a blessing.

Holy Communion is the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He joyfully gives to His Church to eat and to drink. This gift bestows tre-mendous benefits. His body and blood forgives ours sins, strengthens our faith, binds us to the Lord, and unites us with each other. In this is life and salvation.

The Lord therefore invites to His altar baptized Christians who trust that they will receive in Holy Communion all that He promises there: His body and blood, the forgiveness of sins, union with Christ and His Church, life, and salvation. Know that He gives it to you with great joy.
