• If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We’re glad you’re here!

• Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service.

Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: “What do I need to receive? What do I have to give?” We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey!

– The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral

Welcome to Grace Cathedral

about today’s readings Micah 6:1-8; 1 Corinthians 1:18-31; Matthew 5:1-12Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet.

The image that permeates everything we think or say about the season of Epiphany is that of the three kingly sages prostrating themselves before the lowly infant who has nowhere to lay his head but the feeding trough of oxen and donkeys, a homeless child about to become a refugee. They recognized the power and glory they saw there as something infinitely greater than the might of the murderous and paranoid tyrant who ruled Judea.

Is it any wonder that this child grew up to proclaim the kingdom of the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful and the persecuted? As Paul says, “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.”

The way of life and truth that Jesus has given us to follow is one of humility and simplicity, goodness and service, that same path marked out a half millennium before his birth in the prophet Micah’s words, “to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

This reflection was written by Peter Grace. Peter has been a member of the cathedral congregation since 2010 and is a graduate of the Education for Ministry program. He is currently a co-facilitator of the Thursday Bible study and Sunday 4:30 book study groups.

who may abide upon your holy hill? Whoever leads a blameless life and does what is right, *

who speaks the truth from his heart. There is no guile upon his tongue; he does no evil to his friend; *

he does not heap contempt upon his neighbor. All The righteous shall abide upon God’s holy hill. In his sight the wicked is rejected, *

The Nicene Creed The people stand.

The Prayers of the People

After each petition Lord, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect.

The Confession of Sin All may kneel.

Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. All Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The presider pronounces God’s absolution.

The Gift of a Name

Presider The peace of Christ be always with you. All And also with you.

Today, as we offer each other a sign of peace, share the gift of your name and a word or two about something that gives you joy.

Welcome

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

An offering will be received for the ministries of Grace Cathedral. Thank you for your generosity.

Anthem Pärt

Choir Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Amen. —Beatitudes

The ReadingsMicah 6:1–8

Hear what the Lord says: Rise, plead your case before the mountains, and let the hills hear your

voice. Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the Lord, and you enduring foundations of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. “O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and redeemed you from the house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.”“With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

1 Corinthians 1:18–31

The message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved

it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe.

For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but

we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in the presence of God. He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”

Matthew 5:1–12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples

came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
