Transcript of The Foundation of your Community · Wilfried and Wiebke Ortlepp Linda and Mike Overholt Harold and...
In 2013 we were proud to join with other community foundations across the country in a national campaign to tell Canadians about how we can grow philanthropy together. We hope you have seen the community foundation ads now appearing on national media.
On Salt Spring, islanders have again shown their commitment to the Foundation by donating generously, while community charities have brought us many compelling and relevant requests for grants to assist them in their work. We were able to grant over $148,000 to support Salt Spring organizations, clients and volunteers, and paid particular attention to the areas of mental health, housing, and children and youth.
This year we were honoured to receive a large contribution from the JDB Trust, thanks to the wishes of three long-time Salt Spring Islanders, siblings John and Dorah Ward and Bertha Cameron. We are particularly grateful when individuals remember the Foundation in their estate planning, ensuring that their legacy will support many charities in their own community forever.
As we move into our 30th year and grow to over $5.1 million in assets, we see the results of a very special community working together to build a vital Foundation for the future. Thank you to our donors, Foundation board and committee members, and all those who work tirelessly in our volunteer organizations to make Salt Spring a smart and caring community. And remember:
“The foundation of our community starts with you— and me!”

2013 Grant Recipients
“We’re relatively new to Salt Spring, having arrived in late 2005. At that time, we were also relatively new to retirement, so we began looking around this place we now called home to see what it offered. We discovered a vibrant community, rich in cultural activities and full of interesting people. Coming from education and social services backgrounds, we were naturally inclined to look for ways in which we could contribute—and the Foundation provided an ideal opportunity. We’re pleased that our small donations can be combined with those of others to enhance the quality of life on our island now and into the future. ” — Lyle and Susan Eide

Long-Time Islanders Leave Significant Gift to Community In December 2013, the Foundation received a major bequest from the JDB Trust, established by siblings John and Dorah
Ward and Bertha Cameron. Dorah, the last survivor
of the three, passed away in January 2013. The proceeds of the JDB Trust were divided between
the Salt Spring Island Foundation and the
Lady Minto Hospital Foundation, each
organization receiving just over $391,000.John was a decorated World War II
veteran. He and his sisters shared a home on Valhalla Road and a love of hiking and golfing. Cheerful and sharp to the end of her life, Dorah spent her last years in Greenwoods, where she enjoyed crossword puzzles and a nip of Scotch whisky. According to family friend Nancy Andersen, “They were three very special and sweet people.” John, Dorah and Bertha have left an enduring legacy of generosity and love of community that will benefit islanders for generations to come.
Salt Spring Island Foundation VolunteersSmart & Caring
Salt Spring
Leading up to Canada’s 150th anniversary, the Salt Spring Island Foundation is participating in Smart & Caring Commu-nities, a landmark effort for Canada’s 191 community foundations to pursue two significant goals: to fill the gaps in the network, so that every Canadian is served by a community foundation by 2017; and to establish Smart & Caring Community Funds. While each fund will be unique to its community, all will contribute toward building a nationwide legacy and permanent assets that will serve Canadian communities for years to come.
In November 2013, the Foundation announced a multi-faceted Smart & Caring Salt Spring initiative:
• Growing Philanthropy. Three new endowed funds will be established by the Foundation to support youth in philanthropy, volunteerism and projects to strengthen non-profit organizations. Our new Youth Philanthropy Committee, made up of seven GISS students, is already off to a promising start and hopes to be giving out its first grants to youth projects in 2014.
• Critical Issues Projects. Funds will be established to target the two most critical areas of need on the island, as determined by the Foundation’s 2012 Community Needs Survey: affordable housing and community health, with a special focus on mental health.
Your Community Makes You. And You Make Your Community.

Ways to Give
Special Thanks
n Milestone Funds help build the Community Endowment Fund and are suitable for donors who prefer to have the Foundation make granting decisions on their behalf. Create a Milestone Fund, previously called a Named Fund, with your donation (or accumulated dona–tions) or bequest of $5,000 or more. The fund may be in your name or the name of someone you wish to honour.
n Field of Interest Funds enable donors to specify a particular field of interest to which the income of their fund will be directed, for example, social services, children and youth, arts and culture, or the environment. A Field of Interest Fund can be established by your donation (or accumulated donations) or bequest of $15,000 or more and can be in the name of your choice.
n Advised Funds are useful options for those who wish to specify a particular island charity (or charities) as the recipient(s) of the annual distributions made possible by their funds. It’s possible to create an Advised Fund with your donation (or accumulated donations) or bequest of $25,000 or more. As with the fund types above, your Advised Fund can be in the name of your choice.
n Partnership Funds allow donors to work with the Foundation to decide how best to enrich the quality of life on Salt Spring. Partnership funds may be estab-lished with your donation (or accumulated donations) or bequest of $50,000 or more. Donors can meet with a Foundation representative each year to provide direction about the distributions made possible by their funds.
