I imagined the Kumaon of Jim Corbett and tried torecreate his spirit; those curled up nights reading his man-eater talesand the spell that his storytelling cast on me. The stalking of a man-eater alone, on foot and the deep respect for his

adversary came with the chilling awareness that on such a mission, the line between the hunter and the hunted wouldalways be in his disfavor. Only someone who hasstepped into the silky darkness of an Indian jungle on a moonless

night can place into context what those exploits meant.

This film is about our inadequacies when confronted by the forces of nature and our frightening ignoranceas to the effects ofits disruption.

Her husband dotes on her and provides for her, yet her yearning for a childoverwhelms their once happy marriage. The appearance of her ex-lover andhis charming son Arjun, who himself is motherless, seems to suggest thatfate has conspired to bring them together. Her feelings are churned and sheallows herself to act on impulse with serious repercussions.

I had set some pretty unusual goals for the screenplay of The Forest - it had to be a thrillerwith a dramatic core that explores a psychological relationship, and the consequences ofman's destruction of the environment. These are pretty disparate themes to weave into asingle narrative, it pushes the envelope a bit.

Films made in Mexico, China, Iran regularly cross geo-political boundaries, givingthe world a cinema that is universal in its themes, yet local in its treatment. We inIndia have the potential to do that and more but weve remained closely defined byour traditional industry. Now things are changing, I think it is a great time to be anindependent film maker from India.Ive spent the last five years figuring out how the international movie business worksand how to leverage the advantages of being in India. I used the production ofLittle Terrorist and Road To Ladakh, my first two short films, to practically implementsome of these ideas.

Building up a foreign crew, doing international quality post-production out of Indiawriting and producing in such a way that the film appeals to a global audience - wevedone some pretty innovative things in the production of this film. I see us becoming

an international craft-shop of technicians, talent and facilities, built up over films andartistic projects. A place where screen-writers, post production, scenography, specialeffects participate to produce excellence in cinema out of India.I hope The Forest will show that it is possible to make a film of a certain quality, withina certain budget which, if pitched right, can becommercially successful in the marketsof its choosing.

We had to film our leopard sequences in Thailand. Animal rights groups andprotection laws in India have recently prohibited the filming of captive animals. This is ironic even for a film that attempts to bring awareness of the problemsof wildlife conservation to a cinema going audience.

Thierry le Portier (Gladiator, Two Brothers) Leopards are one of the hardestof the big cats to train. Kali and Joy, the leopards seen in The Forest wereflown from Paris to Bangkok, while the rest of the film crew, fresh off theIndian set, joined them there. Our Thai team found forests that resembledthose filmed in India. We rebuilt the roof of the rest-house to match the roofsequences shot in India. A digital visual effects element that had not beenplanned originally came into The Forest, we used split screens and bluescreens to merge the actors with the leopard sequences.

Ankur Vikals confrontation with the leopard on the tree was actual.Man and beast faced-off each other for only time in The Forest.

Guillaume Castagne (Special effects and makeup) created humanlimbs and bodies which had suffered attacks by the leopard thatwere part of the special effects used to give frighteningly realisticspecial effects. Some of the actors were cast in silicon so he couldsculpt entire mutilated bodies.

Tarun Kumars prosthetic and make up took six hours each dayas layers of complicated makeup was applied and taken off. Hespent nights in sub-zero temperatures drenched in fake blood.

Although only a fleeting glimpse in the final film, Gulliames handcrafted dummy Leopard was created hair-by-hair should the filmever require it.

The original music of the film was written by composer Matt Robertson and performedby the London Metropolitan Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios. The Indian instrumentswere recorded in New Delhi. Matt sent his compositions over the internet and we woulddisscuss the score by video-conference each night. This cost effective way of workingbetween two continents allowed us to make the recording at Abbey Road a reality.

recording at Abbey Road was a trip. Pink Floyd and The Beatle s all over the walls - this is where the Rings was scored, U2 had a booking after us and here we were, sitting on the same sofa as all

From my experience of going to the jungles sinceI was a kid I know that it is hard enough to see a tiger, let alone be in the right position to film it, that too forthe big screen. But this is something that I was notwilling to compromise on. I wanted the audience toshare the thrill that I had experienced seeing thesemagnificent creatures for the first time in the wild.

The Forest is an entertaining thriller about human frailty

articulated through mans conflict with nature.

It is my idea of popular cinema with a conscience.
